He won't play the British Open if he's smart.  If he comes back too soon and re-injures his knee or ankle he might shorten his career by a number of years.

I don't think so. Only he knows how his injuries are and how he's progressing, but he said as of Sunday he still hasn't hit a single golf ball yet. So I think it's very unlikely he'll play.

I hope he does (being healthy, of course), because I want someone to watch. The British Open is always on early in the morning here in Pennsylvania and if he's not playing, I'm not going to wake up early to watch it.

Hopefully he'll be ready for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational the first week of August.

"In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have competed at THE PLAYERS, but it's a big event, and I wanted to be there to support the tour," Woods said. "I've got to learn from what I did there and do it right this time and not come back until I'm ready.

"I think my best years are still ahead of me, and I'm very confident and optimistic about the future."

Tiger is killing me......it is "The Open Championship" not the "The British Open"......first Jimmy Roberts gets this wrong interviewing Rory at Wimbelton, and now Tiger can't get it right in a tweet....I'm an American and this bothers me......

No, it's the British Open at least as much if not more than "The Open Championship." The R&A; even referred to it officially as "The British Open" for decades when they were having trouble getting away with calling it "The Open" because few people would travel across the Atlantic to play in it. Only recently (last 20+ years) have they tried to revert to calling it "The Open Championship."

Guess what? To everyone in the U.S., "The Open" is the U.S. Open. We don't get all uppity about it. We don't even care if you want to call the one in April the "U.S. Masters" as people in Europe tend to do (because they have their own set of "Masters" tournaments).

Whatever you call it, the name is... (apologies for how mean that smiley looks...).

Tiger will be missed at the British Open but not as much as would have been the case a few years ago - after all, we have a new Prince of the Fairways, in the person of Rory McIlroy; he's the big draw at the moment, this side of the Pond, anyway. And we have a raft of Europeans with a good chance of winning. There may be an effect on advertising in the US but I'll be interested to see what the viewing figures are like if Rory is in contention at the weekend, and Ricky Fowler, DJ, Kuchar and Overton are in contention.

(btw - Masters is Masters over here and has been for a while, particularly since the BBC stopped being the primary broadcaster of it)

Get over it.  Bobby Jones called it the British Open throughout his book Down the Fairway and if it is good enough for Bobby it is good enough for me.  This whole "Open Championship" stuff is a latter day affectation in the US.  When the brits start pronouncing filet without the t and paella without the l I'll start worrying about their sensibilities.

No big-deal for me really.
Even though the website, all the merchandise, caddies bibs, tee-box markers, pin-flags, etc clearly state 'THE OPEN' (complete with claret-jug logo) - I too think this is a more-recent (last 10-15 years?) and concerted effort by the R&A; to make it a 'unique' a brand-name as ' THE MASTERS' , or ' WIMBLEDON' , etc.

I don't get uptight when folks call it 'The British Open'...it's not a new trend - Jack Nicklaus always used to call it by this title.

Anyway, I think we all knew Woods wouldnt be playing this year - so it's no big surprise either. And, although he has to say what he said, I wonder if his confidence is giving way to some form of 'denial' now?

35 years old, four knee-surgeries, chronic Achilles issue, etc, etc...I mean no-one wants to see him try to compete and swing like he does with those physical issues cos it's asking for trouble, missed-cuts, pull-outs, etc - you want to see him 'at least' compete, right?

Both are correct. In America, we call it the British Open, and that's not incorrect. It's a way to clearly distinguish between it and our Open, the U.S. Open.

Yes, but it's just to CLEARLY distinguish, because people that don't follow golf could easily get them confused. They're both correct.

I can't believe so many of you are so quick to say he won't play this year at all. I absolutely think he'll play this year. Probably at Firestone, but if not there, definitely before the new year. He's feeling a lot better. It's not going to take 6 more months to heal.
