YOU CAN DO IT!

Even though I deserve an :offtopic: for this, I heard that Rudy ended up as a maintenance man working at Notre Dame after he graduated. Much like the guy Charles Dutton played in the movie. Bottom line - we all have dreams, but be smart.

My kid's classmate up till last year, is going for it. He's 13 and a 2.5-ish handicap (he seems to par/birdie every hole). He really wants to be a pro. He went from a 7-8 HC down to a 2-3 HC over this last summer by playing "a lot" (guessing 10 hours a day?). He has not finished growing (he's a little shorter than my son at only 5'4"), and we are guessing he has another 5" to 6" of growing left. He already knocks the ball a long way off the tee.

Meanwhile, my son's HC is steadily increasing (especially since we have only 3 days till the Fall Outing  ) to about a 20HC. Too much homework, taking 6 honors classes and one regular class. His life goal right now, is to become a neurosurgeon and play golf only for fun. This is also a really tough goal.

Not sure which one will reach his goal, but if they both really work at it. Maybe it could happen?

The only problem with having a 3 hdcp is that so many people have it. On my golf team we have a .6 a 1.3 a 3.3 and a bunch later there is me (5.8-should be about a 3 by 2014 once I play rounds) I think if you want to turn pro you should keep working on your game than if you are a little better than you can asses if you can do it. But he has a lot more to do if he is still a 3

Not knowing anything about the 2 kids beyond what you have just said, I'd put your kid at least 2 orders of magnitude (i.e, 100x) more likely to reach his goal.  There are a LOT more neurosurgeons than there are successful touring pros.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Agreed, but he seems to par and birdie a lot. Maybe he can shine at his new high school. I don't know what the team handicap is there. Too bad neither he nor my son go to our town's high school. They are fiercely competitive, like your HS.

Good luck to both of them. I would put my money on your son and his goal. It's more controllable.

Of course they are just kids. They could both end up going entirely different directions from what they think now.

Hey man, wanted to check in on your progress. Don't listen to the haters, it's all mental. I just turned 25, am a 12-14 handicap and just decided this is what I want to pursue over the next 10 years of my life. We will never succeed if we listen to the people telling us how high the odds are stacked against us, we know this already, which will make the story that much greater when we make it. How's it going?

It can't be going great if this thread hasn't been posted in since 2013? If someone was getting somewhere the first thing they would do is come silence all the haters don't you think?

Hey, Rudy had a hell of a life!  He walked onto the ND team, got that sack against Georgia Tech, and saved middle earth when freakin' Frodo couldn't finish the job and throw that ring into the fires of Mount Doom.

That joke is about 2 years too late.  Wonder what happened to Travis Robinson?

That's all right. I liked it. You forgot that he also saved Astoria, Oregon and discovered One-Eyed Willie's treasure years before he made the team!

How is your journey towards becoming a professional golfer? Just curious.

Judging by his avatar, apparently he ended up becoming Jason Day. We were wrong to be naysayers.

Corey Pavin an athletic freak?  Now that is funny stuff.   That is like saying John Daly could have been a distance runner.

I knew it, I always thought Daly had come out of a college track program.

Fellow I know, got a couple backers and spent a couple months playing monday qualifiers for a mackenzie tour spot. Apparently need top 10 finish. Don't know his handicap but the few times playing with him, he's shot 72.

He continued to shoot 72 each monday, never broke top ten.

    • Lazarus Irons....top notch and way cheaper than the big brands.
    • I know you guys were discussing this like a year ago. But, ironically I just had this discussion with my brother-in-law. We literally just did one of these. I'd always used the "Slow-Cook, Rest, and Sear" Method. But my bother-in-law was convinced the "5-Min/lb, 500 degree" method was the way. So, we gave it a go. I have to say it came out great.  I have a 25 year old, electric oven, GE brand... Not sure if that matters, but it came out great. ... Of course we stressed that nobody was to open the oven.   I don't make these all that often so, I'm not sure if I can fully recommend one method or the other, because without doing a Pepsi Challenge, I'd say both ways come out great. 👍😁👍
