Will my significant other appreciate the significance of yet another set of irons?

I've worked pretty hard to purge our basement and garage of my extra blades (way too many to list) and I have a few sets on their way out. None of them are  worth anything and I'll basically be giving them away.

My keepers are my Cleveland TA3s that need to be lengthened and regripped (skating on thin ice) and of course my two go-to sets (Mizuno MP-11 and Cleveland TA1). They're in great shape and have just been lengthened and regripped.

I have a chance to buy a set of mint condition blades just like one of my go to sets, but with different shafts (same stiffness just a different manufacturer) and new grips for less than the price of regripping (which I'll have to do again .. . some day).

HERE'S MY QUESTION:

What are the chances my lovely wife will appreciate my thriftiness, long term vision, and general awesomeness if I pick up another set of blades? Considering the cost of regripping, that they're essentially free?

You're absolutely right of course. I'll post a link to the Canadian seller's page so you can see how blissful my life is sure to be.

She would want you to be happy especially if the price is practically free.

She's so tired with breastfeeding almost 24/7 that she probably won't even notice an extra set (or two). There's no way this can't be a bad thing. Thanks!!

Agree, no chance.  On the other hand, i do not appreciate the differences between her closet full of identical black shoes either, but she does.  In my house we have a very nice relationship: i don't question shoes, and my wife doesn't question golf clubs!  (we are fortunately financially stable, as she's not into Jimmy Choo, and i'm more into closeout models than the newest $400 white drivers...)

Given your commitment to the game, I assume that you have some sort of loose golfing budget? If you have an approximate amount of money that you know you spend, just present it as a simple business case comparing the costs for each: You: You know, I tripped across a deal for $X that was interesting. But I really want to spend $X + Y on something slightly better next year. Her: You idiot, just take the cheaper deal. If you can present your situation in that format, she may make the decision for you. As long as you keep it purely in terms of money, the fact that the cheaper solution includes more clubs is just a side detail in accomplishing your goal. :-)

Id say the chances are slim to none and Slim just left town.  Not that you are alone.  My girlfriend is really supportive of my golf obsession and even she makes fun of me for buying new clubs all the time.  I tried using the excuse of I bought them for cheap on Ebay but that doesnt usually fly.

She has always told me though that as long as it makes me happy and my golf spending doesnt prevent us from paying our bills that its fine.  Hopefully your wife has a similar attitude.

Now we know why sean_miller is the way he is... he hasn't properly trained his wife yet! I kid, I kid... I say buy them. Better to ask for forgiveness than permission.

But seriously. You asked for permission from a group of guys on the Internet. ;-) It's obvious you want to justify the purchase.

If I could find that old picture of your garage, I'd repost it at this point.

LOL That is a great line. Better to ask for forgiveness than permission. My buddy just avoids the situation and ships things to his dad's address. I just laugh at him because his wife has no interest in golf and would never even know the difference if she saw his bag. Mine has that whole "attention to detail" thing and would notice a shiny new set in my trunk. Then I'd be in the doghouse for quite some time. Though I do currently see some "lightly used" Mizuno MX-25s on a site at the moment that caught my interest.

Another funny thing from an old-timer that works at Golf Galaxy and really just works there to have health-care (he's retired). He just is brutally honest with people and never tries to sell you something he thinks you don't need. I believe he's even a retired professional-turned-instructor. I was just holding an R11 just to hold it and look at it and he came over, put his hand on my shoulder and said "Closeouts over whiteouts". "What a stupid thing to call this trend, "whiteout", just call it "ripoff" Then he went into the "back in my day" talk and I asked him if he thought Hickory would hold up to the R11. Then he walked over to a guy looking at an odyssey putter and started convincing him that all he needs is a classic blade with 3 guidelines on it. lol

    • Day 37, June 10.  Today was primarily WFH, so I had several practice sessions (indoors, off a mat, into the net).  At least one each of U, 9, and 6-iron full swings with the usual priority.   I also tried a few times a putting type stroke with my 4H, as something I should probably learn how to hit (and what it does), but the mechanical shot at home off a mat doesn't tell me much of what it's doing.  That's something I should probably try on a real green, not during a round until I've tried it.
    • Day 10 (10 Jun 26) - Played in the midweek shootout at my home course - on aerated and sanded greens - day of trying to figure tempo to get the best roll on the greens.  Approach game was decently solid as was shots off the tee.
    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
