Hank Haney's business is golf instruction...  His passion is golf instruction. He wasn't going to throw fuel on a fire and torch one of his ex-students.  What good would that do for his future, and rep as a PGA professional instructor?

Hank has more integrity than that... He wasn't some Nanny of the Kardashian's who just wanted to make some noise and cash in on a tell all book.  He is a well respected tour instructor... And maintains that integrity even with the book.

I believe the title of the book - maybe how Hank feels in losing Tiger.  It was his own 'Big Miss' as a professional golf instructor??  How many times in life do you have a chance to work with one of the greatest ever to play the game?

I'm still confused as to why Hank titled the book "The Big Miss" considering the large amounts of success he's had with Tiger. I guess it's something we'll have to read in the book to understand, but the period in his relationship with Tiger being called "the miss" would have to be in the very latter part (post-scandal), which is still not a very long period of time in his 6 years.

Maybe had had something to do with all the "miss" things that came out with Tiger, like  " Miss us" Woods,  all the mis tresses, Elin's swing and a miss with a 9 iron, the near- miss of the fire hydrant.....all of Tiger's mis takes.    There's a whole lot of "miss" in his life!

Could be several things...

1.) He was Tigers instructor and spent what has been reported ~ 110 days per year with him... Perhaps he didn't know Tiger was having the transgressions?  At the time it became public knowledge, it was widely covered and all over the news/radio.  If Hank didn't know about it - he could consider that 'The Big Miss'?

2.) This is what I believe the title means... The book will give an insider look at how Hank worked with Tiger on his game - but due to the transgressions and all the other issues that became public knowledge, Tiger decided to change those who were in and around his camp.  Hank was one of those that was terminated.  Just like Steve Williams.... Both were dismissed.  And it was Hank's 'Big Miss' in working with the best to ever play the game.

What is Tiger's typical miss? Is it a pull? Maybe that's what Hank was usually working on with him?

Also, I'm sure Mark Steinberg got an advanced copy of the book from Hank, before it even went to print.  There is no way they would let it go to print if it had information which Tiger didn't approve.  You better believe Excel would've brought a suit against Hank and his team for writing something deemed 'out of bounds.'

At the time, it was usually a push cause he got stuck all the time.

Pretty amazing to me that Hank would do this.In my opinion he had a lot to do with Tigers swing becoming such a mess.Could it be about the money?I think so.

I bet Hanks wife planted the seed in his head to write the book.  She seems to have A big influence on what he does.  I'm sure she'd enjoy extra money in the Haney bank. Wives dictate alot sometimes without anybody knowing. lol

If Haney's book focuses on golf and doesn't delve into Tigers personal life too much I don't have an issue with him writing it.   Tiger is one of the best golfers to have lived so I see nothing wrong with Haney writing a book about his experiences as his swing coach.  A number of books have been written by people close to Hogan so on the surface Tiger is fair game as well.  Tiger has slammed Haney for the book but Tigers always tried to control what is written about him so it's no surprise he's not happy about it.

I'm not completely knowledgeable about the mechanics of the golf swing, but to hear a lot of tour pros and instructors (such as Sean Foley) not fully comprehend what Haney was trying to teach in his methodology is very surprising. It's probably a reason his means of instruction is through Golf Digest, celebrities, and probably why he doesn't have any tour pros under his wing. With that said, this book is definitely about money.

"There have been other one-sided books about me, and I think people understand that this book is about money. I'm not going to waste my time reading it." ... "I was a witness to greatness," Haney said Thursday. "And I get asked the question all the time about Tiger. I wanted to talk about it and I wanted to share it with people. That's the bottom line. I'm not sure I understand the unprofessionalism part. He hasn't read the book. There's a lot of positives in there. I think he's the greatest golfer who ever lived. "I was just in a position to observe greatness and anyone who observes greatness likes to share it. I feel like I wrote a book that was fair and honest. It's golf history." ... "Again, I want to thank Hank for everything he did for me," Woods said Thursday. ... "That is what I alluded to earlier," he said. "I just think this book is very self-serving." [/QUOTE]

The book’s title was selected for its multiple meanings, Haney said. Not only was the “big miss” a constant concern as Woods fought accuracy off the tee, but a metaphor for what the instructor called “missed opportunities that Tiger and I experienced.”

At least there's some clarification. Not interested in buying the book to find out what missed opportunities he's referring to...

More surprising to me that Jaime Diaz is doing the actual writing on this. Always heard he was the only journo who was close to Tiger personally, as they went all the way back to junior golf together. Wonder when that bridge was burned?

It looks like he wants to cash in on burning bridges.....a bit classless on Haney's part for a payday.  IMO....that is what this is......

It will be interesting to see if I/we are wrong because it appears this is what it will be.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
