Your argument is pretty clear that the content doesn't matter, it's the act of writing the book that's "gross."

Its the act of a teacher writing a book about his student that is gross. I work with athletes year round, and I also find it disgusting that he broke student/teacher confidentiality and wrote this book. He's shown that he does not deserve the trust required in a student/teacher relationship. What he did was totally unprofessional, giving up any dignity and self respect he once had for a quick payday. And to do it to the man who is responsible for his fame and fortune... Sad, gross, it can be called a lot of things. None of them good.

Not exactly true. Before Woods, Haney was a very well known golf instructor.Β  The involvement with Woods made Haney a household name in the golf world, but he was certainly not a complete unknown prior to that point.

And, if Haney is to be believed, he hardly made a fortune from Woods. Something like $50,000 per year.Β  But, no doubt his higher profile indirectly led to more lucrative business offers.

FWIW I don't think anyone who is talking about the money Hank has made "off of" or "because of" or "from" Tiger is talking about his salary only .

Exactly, there was no "Haney Project" and probably wouldn't be if Haney wasn't Tigers coach in 2009.Β  IMO,Β Haney was entitled to every dime he made prior to the book.Β Β Tiger was the guy everyone wanted to coach, and Haney was able to convince Tiger he was the right guy.

The problem I have isΒ Haney got greedy and decided to take a quick paycheckΒ to write aΒ book that clearly violated his relationship and trust as Tigers swing coach while Tiger was still an active player on Tour.

Here are Haney's careerΒ accomplishments from his website, obviously most of his success and income can be attributed to his coaching of Tiger;

Career Accomplishments

* Instructed the #1 Player in the World, Tiger Woods
2004 - 2010
* Golf Digest Magazine’s Top 2 Teacher in the World in 2008 - during his time with Tiger
* Instructed over 200 touring professional from the PGA, LPGA, Champions, European, Japanese, Australian and Asian Tours - no names here, just a number
* His students have won every major championship in professional golf, amateur golf and junior golf including 1998 Masters and British Open Champion Mark OMeara, two-time U.S. Open mateur and one-time British Open Amateur Kelli Kuehne - Omeara who helped convince Tiger to go with Haney, never heard of Kelli Kuehne
* Analyst for ESPN TV’s golf coverage from 2005-2008 - Tiger years
* Member of the following Professional Advisory Staffs: Nike Golf, Golf Digest, Golfsmith and Graphite Design - Tiger Years
* Authored 4 books on golf instruction; "Essentials of the Swing" (2009), β€œThe Only Golf Lesson You’ll Ever Need” (1999), β€œNo More Bad Shots” (2001) and β€œFix Your Yips Forever” (2006)
* Produced 14 instructional DVDs on golf instruction (most in 2010 and during Tiger years)
* Appeared in 11 golf infomercials including the most successful golf infomercial of all time, the Adams Golf Tight Lies infomercial (during Tiger years)
* Written over 300 golf instructional articles over the years and has appeared on the cover of Golf Digest magazine 6 times (Tiger Years)

Agree, it's a pretty easy read, it's a book you need to read and make up your own mind on what Haney writes.

Just bought the book tonight, will let you know what I think after I'm done. Unfortunately I've heard it's mostly about boring swing talk rather than actual work with Tiger... hope that's not true..

mmoan2: not a bad analysis IMO. Tiger has been rather patient about getting back to form, to judge from his interviews anyway. This is consistent with your thesis: he knows it takes him a couple years to successfully integrate a basic swing change. Now that he seems to have largely gotten things sorted he's in a very strong position. But only time will tell.
