If the Augusta National board members are smart, they would admit an inaugural "class" of four or five women all at once. If Augusta only admits one, the social activists will start yelling about tokenism.

If it's good enough for Shoal Creek........

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Agreed. And do it over the summer when nobody's noticing & don't even announce it. Then next year, at the 2013 Masters, have one of the new female members (Condi Rice?) stand with the group when there's a photo session so bam - the world now knows. That would be doing it 'their way' & would diffuse any criticism.

I don't get what the big deal is.  ANGC is a private club, they get to invite who they want to be part of their club.  As stated, they might already have female members but it's not required they disclose it.

Precisely. Most of the other points made in this thread are entertaining but immaterial. The members know, I hope, that to be browbeaten into submission by a baying media on this one will mean that they will forever be remembered as a bunch of ..... (insert personalized comment here) Let's reverse the situation: no men are members of the golf club that hosts the most prestigious women's event. Would the media elite be taking the same position? Not exactly.

Wonder if they waited until after CR was sure she was not going to running for VP before they made this call. If the voice was Mitt's running mate or a membership at Augusta, I think she got the better end of that deal.

Glad to see Augusta open one more door. It starts with a couple that make news and pretty soon it is no big deal. 20 years late, but that's how progress works sometimes.

If Augusta wasn't the site of a Major the fact it was a men only club would be a non-issue.  There are still plenty of golf clubs that are men only throughout the country, even a few in NY.   I don't have an issue with it, but I'm sure all the woman libbers will be happy now.

I am fairly certain the PGA Tour doesn't play at courses that discriminate based on sex or race. That should make everyone happy.

I think you are correct regarding race but not yet correct regarding gender. I think any new additions to the PGA schedule would have a hard time if the discriminate based on gender, but some old boys are still out there.

Hey! How about that piece of prognostication! That dude is amazing.

Good on Augusta not caving in to the raving cows on the left! :D

The fact they admitted women on the clubs terms says more about the clubs willingness to spit in the face of political correctness...which is a breath of fresh air in todays climate!

They announced it, though, and didn't do it on the sly as you said. :D

They weren't going to announce it, but they heard you say they wouldn't.  So they decided to announce it so they wouldn't be seen as caving in to you.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
