What do you think you would shoot at Augusta if you played on it with the Sunday conditions? Pretend you got to play a round on the course the Monday after the Masters ended, and they just left the course the way it was. Playing from the back tees. You'd play just how you normally do, either alone, or with a group of your friends. No tournament pressure, just like a weekend round.

All I know it'd be easily into the 100s and probably the highest I've ever shot. I'm not sure my bag can hold enough balls for the amount I would lose! lol.

I'm sure Monty said before that if you put a scratch club golfer on Augusta they would struggle to break 100. I cant remember if that was during the commentry for the Masters last year of the year before...

I call BS. To shoot less than 28 over wouldn't be hard. You get a shot on every hole, and 2 shots on 9 holes, even if you went into every par 4 green in 3 shots, you would still shoot less than 100. There are actually a lot of amateurs that can play golf, and who play on Tournament courses as their home club. I play off 4, and know I could shoot less than 100.

I tend to agree. From what I see of ANGC it's all about the greens. Tee to green there's nothing brutally tough about it - wide fairways, minimal rough, bail-out areas. 13 & 15 for example, are great risk/reward par 5s, but I don't see the difficulty if you just lay up & hit a wedge in on each. 13 is only 500y.

Like I said, it's all about the greens. I'm a decent putter, but I would certainly expect to struggle with the speed & contours. I'm a 7 but I bet I can break 90 from the tips.

Those greens are tough.  I'd estimate 100 to 105.

It's all well and good getting to the greens, but putting the ball in the hole is another story.

That and if you hit a shot imperfectly it likely wouldn't stay on the green.  If they left the Sunday pin positions, I would imagine there would be a lot of 4 and 5 putts.

Considering in all honesty that the fastest greens Ive ever played have probably been at best a 7 or 8, I'd probably score about 130, but I believe I would enjoy it.

If I left the ball above the hole on 16, I'd probably end up putting into the water.

To answer the OP question... "my load" is what I would shoot.

On a side note.  My uncle was a Marshall for the Masters for 12 years.  The last round he played at Augusta he shot a 92 (his best), and he was a 4-5 handicap.

Depends on how i am playing. I have the length for the course, so its not like i wont be hitting scoring clubs into the greens. If the pratice green is the same speed as the course greens, i can get use to the speed in about 30 minutes. So if i am hitting greens, i could probably shoot high 80's low 90's. If i am not hitting greens, 100+ easy..

I think that could sum it up.. If he has been there for 12 years, seen how the pro's play it etc, obviously played it himself a few times, played off 4-5 and shot 92 for a best round i think that the 5-10 hcp's playing it for the first time wouldn't break 100.

Would you really be hitting scoring clubs into:

#1 - 455 yard par 4, uphill

#5 - 455 yard par 4, narrow

#7 - 450 yard par 4

#9 - 460 yard par 4

#10 - 495 yard par 4, downhill

#11 - 505 yard par 4, downhill

#14 - 440 yard par 4

#17 - 440 yard par 4, uphill

#18 - 465 yard par 4, uphill

When I catch a good drive I can put it out there, but these holes would really wear me down through out the day.  I would imagine I'd be hitting a lot of hybrids and even fairway woods into these holes.

I actually live around Augusta, and most of my Dad's old friends and family live there, so I go to the Masters almost every year. Even though I'm a really big newb, meaning I would have no chance of less than 110, I think even if I was even a four or 5 handicap I couldn't break 100. Looking at the course its so intimidating in the first place I doubt my nerves would calm the whole course.

I'm not long any more, I rely a lot on my short game, and I know I've never played a course that requires the short game precision as Augusta.  I know I would not break 100, but I'd sure try!

I think a true scratch golfer would break 90 just about every time. By true scratch I mean a guy who plays a reasonable golf course with an accurate rating, and whose game "travels" fairly well.

You guys seem to dramatically over-estimate the difficulty of the greens. Oakmont greens aren't any easier. Donald Ross greens aren't much easier. We saw countless people putt OFF the greens at Oakmont at the last U.S. Open there, but we rarely see that at Augusta.

A scratch golfer is four to five shots off a PGA Tour player. Even doubling - or tripling - that has the guy breaking 90 pretty consistently.

This is a great thread btw....

First, I would have to stop into the club house and change my shorts. LOL

If I'm playing good. I think I would be around 100. But may struggle to concentrate on all surrounding scenery, I mean come on, you come to Amen Corner where all the history of past Master Champions have been, how could you not almost lose your lunch just thinking about it?

No chance to break 100 here.  I tend to spray the ball with my driver, and on some of these 500+ yard par 4's I would struggle to keep it in play to have a decent 2nd shot.  If I decided to play any kind of smart golf, I'd probably hit my 3-iron on every hole (~240 yards) to keep in in play, but I'd probably still have 200+ yards into almost all the par 4s.  Would make for a long day of 3 iron, 4 iron into most greens.  I'm not that accurate with my long irons, so I'd probably be chipping on most greens. That might actually help me as I have a fantastic short game, but who knows with the speed of the greens.  I would probably wet my pants if I could par a hole.  I would probably just walk off the course in shame the first time I chunked a shot and took a large divot. Note: I would also steal said divot.

Someone should try to talk the people at Augusta National into having what the US Open has and have one amateur golfer come play to see what they can do.  But I imagine Augusta wouldn't want an amateur messing up their course, but it'd be fun to watch.

    • 22 points in a gross Stableford is solid. Nice job.
    • I use a putting mirror often. Mine also lets you put the tees in it to set up barriers on either side of your putter to make sure I'm striking the ball near the center of the putter face.  In fact, I putt with the mirror at least weekly on my indoor mat. Opinions are like backsides; Everyone has one and everyone thinks everyone else's stinks. But in my opinion it really helps. I have a tendency if left unchecked to get my eyeline way inside the target line. Using a putting mirror regularly keeps my set up way more consistent. I don't know if I can back it up with any data but "I believe" it has lead to far greater putting consistency over the past few years.  I also like gates. There are a few gate drills I think help. Basically day-15 of the 30-day Covid Challenge: Check it out here: I actually have a set of putting gates, which my mom got me for Christmas about 10 years ago. But you can use anything from golf balls to soup cans.  I also have a "Perfect Putt" and I like it but wouldn't swear by it. I will say it travels well and I've been known to bring it with me on trips and putt in my hotel room with it.  Lastly, I have a set of Devil Balls.  Amazon.com I'm not impressed with the Devil Balls. I actually don't like them at all. If you'd like the set I have I'll send them to anyone who's willing to pay the shipping.
