And "use to" ;)

To be fair, that is a tough one. I'm never 100% sure when to use "use to" and when to use "used to". They are both correct depending on the situation.

I have trouble with this one, here's an explanation from the net but I still have issues:

Quote:
Remember, we always use this word when talking about the past. So when do you use use to without the d at the end? When the base form of the verb is used. Look at these examples- She didn't use to swim before noon. (Now she does swim before noon.) Or Did your father use to ride a horse? In these cases the past tense is shown with the did and didn't .

Here's more:

Quote:

If we want to make a negative sentence, the didn’t part shows that we are talking about the past tense.
It is NOT common to use Used to in negative form though we will show you how to do it anyway.

Compare the normal past tense:

  • I played rugby on Saturday. (past - affirmative)
  • I didn’t play rugby on Saturday. (past – negative – play doesn’t have the –ed at the end because the auxiliary didn’t tells us that the sentence is in the past tense)

And now let’s see a sentence with Used to :

  • I used to like her, but now I hate her.
  • I didn’t use to like her but now I think she is great.

Many times we use never instead of didn’t . In this case we use “ used ” in past tense. Compare:

  • I didn’t use to smoke.
  • I never used to smoke

Like I said, it's a tough one. Way more harder then lose/loose.

English language sucks!!!

Well, the confusion amongst all of the rest of us is more than enough info to prove that you shouldn't owe any money for that one.  Nobody seems to be sure.  I used to think I knew, but now I know I obviously do not.

Really bad sentence construction.  Just because it's possible to use it that way doesn't necessarily make it right.  More correct would be "I used to not play blades...".  Still a bit awkward, but grammatically correct.  Even better is "I used to play cavity irons, but now I play blades."

Just about the only time I'll use the phrase "use to" is when saying something like "A fork is what I use to eat with."

I'll have to go back through and see what the fuss is about, since I didn't bother to read all 35 pages, but English is really not that difficult if one simply makes a point of trying to use it correctly all of the time.  I'm not even a college graduate, yet I feel that I'm a better writer than 3/4 of the people I see posting online.

Curiously, "use to" can be replaced with "f**king" in all these cases and still be grammatically correct.  But it now sounds like a Samuel L. Jackson script.

When used in the negative form, such as "I did not use to play blades, but now I do.".

I would still argue that this is poor grammar, even if websites suggest it is correct.

You are not correct because you can't still replace "use to" with "f**king" and make it grammatically correct.

    • It would certainly be a good thing if more people would at least give walking the course a chance, but "great crime" is awfully melodramatic.  On the Faxon end, I think he's probably just speculating that these guys might be new to golf. That position when teeing up the ball normally suggests that. It shouldn't be too much of a surprise that newbies would be riders.
    • I feel quite confident that for the people in the picture, this comment might as well have been private. Chances of them seeing a quote from either Clayton or Faxon is virtually nil. Even if they saw it, I would be pretty surprised if they cared.  There is certainly a chunk of "bah humbug" about the whole thing though. I don't think it paints either of them in a particularly good light.
    • I agree with the sentiment (about walking) but it’s uncalled for to make such a public comment - if you can’t say something nice don’t say anything, at least that’s how I was taught. Perhaps it was meant for private conversation and was mistakenly made public – I’m just a little younger than Faxon and I could easily make that mistake. At least in the last two places I’ve lived, there’s a certain sub-culture of the golf population that despite being younger would never consider walking (and usually drinks heavily while playing). It’s more about hanging out with the Bro’s in the outdoors than playing golf. I don’t have a problem with that, except that they often are less knowledgeable about golf etiquette and fail to let faster players through. As an aside, when I lived in TN, my main course was cart path only from December through March. It was a short, flat, very walkable course. It drove me crazy that all these fit young guys wouldn’t even think about walking, never realizing that they were probably walking just as much as I was and that they were playing slower.

He could be right on some things, but it comes out as fake to me.  It bothered me when he pulled up the graphic of the human body, showing what looked like a muscle that cross the body (hip to opposite shoulder). There are no muscles that actually do that. There is this stretch and pull, but it isn't like a single muscle that is connected like that.
