How do you feel about the things that are yelled after a player hits their shot?  While some of it is funny, sometimes it is just stupid.  Do you think that it affects the player's mentally or are they used to it and prepared for the outburst?  Most of these are after the shot but I have heard some that are poorly timed and happen before impact.  It may not be quite as bad as the cell phone clicks but is it really necessary? Golf Digest seems to think enough is enough.

Quote:
It's bad enough that golf fans have had to endure "Get in the hole!" and "You da man!" for decades. But now we have to deal with a new era of creative -- make that ridiculous -- sayings, many of which were on display at Olympic Club during the U.S. Open. "Mashed potatoes!"? "Filet mignon!"? "5-hour Energy!"? OK, so that last one -- yelled following a Jim Furyk tee shot, of course -- was actually pretty funny... but back to my original point: Enough's enough! If I wanted to hear drunk guys yelling random things, I'd watch "Jersey Shore."

It's embarrasing really, to hear all these ADULTS out there acting like they are 15 years old.

PGA Tour events have become the new NFL game with all the crazy people who get drunk, and yell out stupid crap that doesn't make sense.

We should be ashamed of ourselves. Other people in the crowd don't stop it, or say anything to these people.

Until the PGA/USGA start ejecting people who yell out (yes like how Augusta Nat. handles these people), it won't stop.

If Augusta National can do it, without losing attendance......

On one hand I think it's stupid and I wish it would stop, but the 5 Hour energy yell for Jim Furyk was pretty damn funny. I cant even imagine some of the stuff thats said during the Waste Management "Keg Party" Open

you put people around "celebrities" and they totally loose there minds. in stead of encouraging good play it seems like the pros are being bullied

At the Players this year, that was the worst I've ever seen. When they were all heckling Kevin Na, and cheering when his ball went into the water. That was very bad, when you cheer for the pros when they hit a bad shot.

The players don't like it, and when players are interviewed, they usually say something like "the fans here are great!", but you notice they don't say that any more.

And it's both yelling AND cell phones that are out of control.

Its kind of stupid and annoying but until the USGA or PGA Tour start throwing people out for doing it, things are only going to get worse.  Honestly, Id love to follow some of these people around the course when they are out playing golf and yell stupid things after every one of their tee shots.  Id be willing to bet they wouldnt think its very funny when it happened to them.

I agree with all of the posts! But does anyone else believe that the pros in their pampered playing have actual focus issues? We can all sit on the couch and tune out our screaming kids and wives, but a camera click is not acceptable to swing a golf club???? I'm sure we all experience much worse working conditions in our daily lives!

It seemed to me that mostly during Webb Simpsons tee shots, that someone was yelling a little early. Almost right before impact. It doesn't bother me too much unless it is degrading. Like someone mentioned before, the Kevin Na thing was horrible.

Usually they are stupid, like "get in the hole." However, I did like on the drivable par 4 (I believe #7), when Nicolas Colsaerts (#2 in driving distance on the European Tour) laid up. A fan yelled "nice lay up", kind of funny. I understand why he did it but they sit at that hole hoping to see some magic and don't care about a European Tour player (who I think is going to be very good). Halfway through the 4th round leading driving distance and putts, that's a nice combo.

Golf in attempting to attract more viewers and participants is reaching outside the core base of golf fans to a different type of people that don't understand the game, its roots or values and just wants to get drunk and have a good time.   These are the guys that think it's okay to heckle Kevin Na or anyone else that's close to or beating their favorite golfer just like they boo the opposing team at a football or baseball game.

Idiots hear the stupid phrases that are yelled during broadcasts and now it's a competition on who can yell out the dumbest phrase or they pick a unique phrase so their drunken friends at home, watching on television will know it's them.  These people aren't attending a tournament because they are fans of golf they are there to get drunk, be loud, obnoxious and party.  If that's what the PGA Tours goal was, then based on the last few tournaments I've watched, they achieved it.

Personally I don't get it. Right out of some corny movie. Akin to having cheerleaders at a chess match or taking a keg and a beer bong to church. There's a time, place and standard for everything. If you want to get loaded and get crazy go to a concert.

It only encourages more bad behavior. A buddy of mine saw or heard the mashed potato thing and thought it would be funny to do on my downswing... He almost caught a right hook over it, the two guys we were paired with grabbed me before I got to him. It's not even that it broke my concentration on that shot. We were only on #11, for the rest of the day instead of staying focused I was concerned with what dumb crap would come out the rest of the round. He's said it several times since but always after my swing, which is fine, still stupid though imo. Add to my frustration his yell brought about a marshall... who kindly followed us the next 5 holes.

I've gotta admit when the guy yelled "yabba dabba doo" after McDowell's tee shot I laughed. I laughed even harder when the birdman interrupted Simpson's interview. But the one that got me was the bottle rocket I swear I heard after one of Tiger's tee shots. It was on Saturday but I cannot find any videos or any articles about it. I do agree the stuff has gotten out of hand and it's only a matter of time before vulgar or racist stuff squeeks by the censors.

It's just juvenile. Yelling bizarre things just for the chance to be heard and/or laughed at is something everyone should outgrow by high school. However, I think that pro golfers should be able to perform with a few distractions. Most other pro athletes have to compete with way, way, way more distraction than they do. I agree that the fans can be distracting, but unless someone breaks the silence at the top of their backswing, I don't think the pros can blame fans.

The Tour is going to have to change golfers expectations if they are going to continue to promote a party atmosphere during tournaments.  Cell phone cameras threw Phil off his game, can't imagine what he'll do the first time someone yells "man boobs" in the middle of his swing.   It was funny in Happy Gilmore, but during a live tournament it gets annoying hearing their stupid phrases shouted after every shot.

I hate it when these people yell.  I don't mind cheering, but 'MASHED POTATOES' is just dumb.
