Vokey wedges have superb engineering and dozens of options (loft and bounce, sole grind, etc.), but I have never cared for them. Heads have always seemed  too light.

I have played Cleveland CG14 wedges for past three years, and I really like them. BTW, if you like the new Cleveland 588 wedges, be sure to try the new Callaway Forged. I got to try both varieties outdoors at a demo day. The two models are similar in concept, and feel great going through the ball.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I think you should consider changing the title of the thread to the $530 (or thereabouts) question.  After reading threads on here about wedge set makeup (specifically the reviews for the "Scor" wedges I believe), I have come around to the idea that since the PW is a scoring club, it would make more sense for it to match the rest of the wedges rather than the rest of the irons.  So if you were also getting new irons, I would consider stopping at the 9.  I am definitely going to consider that whenever I get around to getting new clubs.  Fingers crossed, hopefully soon!

For the record, I currently have a 588 RTG 56* from about 10 years ago and it's my best club.  (I also have a 53* and 60* but I don't use them)  I've never hit any other wedge so I have no comparison.

I can also tell you that several people on here would highly recommend getting fitted for Edel wedges.  I think then $400 becomes $450 FWIW, but they are custom fit for your game.

I had the 588s way back in the day. When Roger defected to Cally and I needed new wedges I went with Vokeys. Now that they resurrected the all time classic 588, I went with Vokey TVDs (M grind).

Their "engineering" is EXACTLY the same as every other quality wedge - apart from the ones which are forged.

There is no difference at all in quality.

It comes down to finding a shape you like and one that feels right when it comes to weight.

It's a totally personal choice.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Look, I don't know much about the Cleveland redo of the 588's. I played Clevelands in the early 00's when I knew little about bounce, grinds, and how to make better use of them.

I think today's PW is more like a 9i (strong loft, longer length shaft) - and the Gap is really a PW (49-51 deg).

As to your question, I did not care for the Vokey SM -- but I did purchase the SM4 - the 60-10 (M Grind) and 62-07 - I typically won't use both at the same time. I like the shape of the head and the grinds are great if you find the one that suits you - you have choices of 3 different bounce configurations in each loft from 54-60.

I find the M Grind works for me.

good luck.

Yep, I concur with this. If I hadn't purchased 5 wedges in October, I'd be all over the Edels. And in another year, hopefully I will. Edel is a great craftsman, and customizes everything. So if you have a consistent wedge swing and know what you like to do with them, hook up with Erik on the Edels.

Considering you're leaving out a ton of quality players' wedges (Cobra, TM - play better than they look, Callaway, Mizuno, Nike, etc - and quite a few boutique brands) maybe you should be asking the $80 question. Flip a coin, pick up some gently worn vintage wedges off ebay and give them a spin.

    • Because brail takes up a lot more space than print, a brail Bible is normally about 20 volumes. Each of which would be the size of the one Eli carries around in the movie. So for him to have a King James Bible he'd have to carry 20 books the size of the one he carries.  Love the movie. I didn't know that until years after I saw it the first time. Don't care, still a great movie.
    • I’m in full agreement with your position. I’m supporting you 100%!   I personally thought that was an amazing post, and thought you would appreciate it!
    • @StuM there were 21 PGA professionals in the field.
    • I use percentages a lot and to translate above to % Of the total 153 in the field (excludes WD) 78 made the Cut is @ 51% overall. Of the 16 LIV  in the field 11 made the cut is @ 69% vs the 67 PGAT Players making the cut is @ 49%  - Advantage to LIV...But you could also say they were bigger fish in the smaller pond. Of the 11 LIV Players that made the Cut @ 6% were in the Top 10 vs @ 7% of the PGAT Players - Slight Advantage to PGAT Of the 11 LIV Players that made the Cut 2, @ 9% were between 10-25 vs @ 21% of the PGAT Players - Advantage PGAT Of the 11 LIV Players that made the Cust 7, @ 64%, were in the bottom 38 players vs @ 46% of the PGAT Players - Advantage PGAT In my opinion PGAT performed better overall despite LIV wining the % that made the cut. It is true that making the cut is a big deal but in reality all that means is they were better than the bottom 50% of all players.  If we are looking to identify the "Cream of the Crop" simply being in the top 50% does not cut it. I agree, no asterisks needed.
    • What's the plot hole in Book of Eli? I really liked that. I don't think The Magnificent Seven (certainly the original one) needs to be a guilty pleasure. Has there been a movie with a stronger cast than that? Brynner, McQueen, Bronson, Coburn, Wallach, Vaughan, Dexter. Pretty incredible. And a straight up remake of Seven Samurai, which is close to the definition of high-brow cinema. Kurosawa's masterpiece.
