It is the bane of my existence.  It makes me say ugly words.  It makes Erik, Mike, James, Dave, and now Brian say ugly words to me.  Why is it so hard to keep my head still?

Maybe it's time for the headgear with the hook to put in my crotch.   I mean, look at this crap:

I don't know what feeling I need to try next.  I can't ever get a feeling that gets my head  steady when I am hitting a ball.  Am I doomed to have a swing where the moon, stars, and planets have to be perfectly aligned to hit the ball solidly?  I can go from hitting 12 greens and 10 fairways to hitting 5 fairways and 4 greens the next.  I am pretty mad.


Could have Erik grab you by the hair like Jack had his coach do.

I had the same issue but not nearly as good a handicap as you.  I did a lot of work in the mirror to finally break me of the habit along with thinking of lowering my head on the back swing to compensate for my desire to lift up.

For what its worth, I find that when I am having trouble turning my shoulders without swaying back or moving my head its always a set up issue thats making it very difficult for me to make a centered pivot without swaying or moving my head to much.When my setup is good its much easier to just turn my shoulders without a sway or head movement.

One drill that I use to get the feeling back of not moving my head is this. Stand perfectly still and only swing back with your arms and not your shoulders. Simply keep almost everything including your lower body from not moving to much while you do this.You should find that in only swinging your arms that this will make it easier for you not to move your head.Now of course this is only a drill to help feel your head not moving during your normal swing.This will give me back the sensation that I need to feel when I turn my shoulders during my swing. Hope this helps a bit and good luck!!


I have the problem of lowering the head in the backswing which is really hard to get rid of aswell. Maybe we should exchange swing thoughts .

Other than just getting the left shoulder to keep going down, down, down, it might help to hit some balls where you close your left eye.  Be interesting to film it and make sure you don't lose sight of the ball on the backswing.

I'll have to try that when I get back from a well deserved "non-golf vacation".

My issue is i can keep my head still in the backswing, but my head likes to drop down and away from the target in the downswing, this causes me to release early and all kind of bad stuff. Really i haven't figured out what to do yet.

Jury rig yourself something along these lines. Sometimes physical cues/feedback are the only way to break an ingrained pattern.

For me, the tear-your-hair-out habit is sucking the club inside on the takeaway and I have to regularly spend time hitting balls with a traffic cone behind me -- so that I'll smack it every time I roll under the plane on the backswing.

    • Option one. Would like an ace even if it’s a worm burner. Have witnessed a couple of aces so would like to be on the other end. 
    • OK - I think we should narrow down a weekend, and start there.  We're going to try to do this in June. I've created a Doodle poll where everyone can vote for the options that work for them.  Please include your username so I can track/post results. Get started today! (I only put in the Saturday dates, but assume the outing would include Friday - Sunday). Once we select a date that works for the most people, I'll start to line up courses and schedule and go from there.
    • Option #2 because I'd add the condition that it's in a tournament. Because that'd mean I'd break par in a tournament. And I already have a hole in one.
    • Hole in one is nice, but those low rounds stick in my memory better. I have two holes in one (and a third on a pitch and putt course which I count as a half). I've shot in the 60s three times in the last 10 years or so and I remember each one pretty well. I'd take the low round.
    • Would You Rather #68: Would you rather make a hole-in-one on a perfectly struck shot, during a round where you otherwise played pretty poorly.  or  Would you rather play well all day and beat your personal best by let's say 3 strokes, but with no eagles.    I'd take option 2.   Although option 1 is always exciting, and rewarding. playing well all day is very exciting because I can also do the opposite.
