I think he withdrew because he didn't want to face "THE BEAR TREAP".  They're the three hardest holes in all of tournament golf.  You're either playing THE BEAR TRAP" and ruining your round or you're thinking about it and ruining your round.

I heard that the commentators are contractually obligated to say how brutal those three holes are every 30 seconds.  The over/under for mentions of "THE BEAR TRAP" is 10,000.  I'm betting both my kidneys on the over.

He may claim he was a distraction to the others in the group but walking off is even more IMO.

Maybe he heard one too many people state that the club change wouldn't affect a golfer of his calibre that much. If anything, I'd think it would affect those elite guys even more in competition. A few errant shots and the confidence that got them to the #1 spot starts disappearing.

Has there been a golfer up near the top that made such a drastic change in clubs and didn't have a dropoff? Nick Price comes to mind but I can't remember if he totally dropped off or just kind of slowly disappeared.

I think Rory started on 10, so he did face the BEAR TRAP.  Here's Els take on Rory quitting;  “I'm a great fan of Rory's, but I don't think that was the right thing to do.”

Tigers heading into 13 at +1, unless he birdies 18, he might not make the cut.  Bad news for Nike.

Tiger birdied 14 so he's Even heading into the Bear Trap - needs to go bogey free or birdie 18 to make the cut right now.

Sure wish Golf could rise above the current drama-based approach to human events.

Now, many are treating Rory like he is a lying politician or a spoiled trust fund baby.

I think that they should give him the benefit of the doubt - isn't golf about honor and integrity?

Doesn't he have an established reputation as a credible, disciplined, and trustworthy guy?

Thought I saw him making some faces which would support his comments about pain from the wisdom tooth.

That he was eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on 18 doesn't conflict with his post.

That he didn't say anything specific about it to his playing partners is unfortunate. But, I would think that he was suffering

physically and stressed out about how bad it had affected his game and the fallout of leaving before the round was finished.

At any rate, hope the announcers get off this and focus on the accomplishments on the course, especially for the leader.

I'm watching Golf Channel and they took 15 of 23 minutes to move from Rory/Tiger to talk about the leaders of the tournament ---- then back to Rory Story - I guess you have to deal with that when you're Number 1 - (My wife thinks that he is a hack for WDing lol)

Benefit of the doubt on what?  That the excuse he made up after he had time to think about his actions was legit?

And no, he doesn't.

Don't get me wrong; he doesn't have a reputation of an undisciplined liar.  But he has always struck me as just as fallible as most other tour pros.  I've seen small flashes of petulant behavior from him before.  Considering his age back then and that he'd appeared to mature a lot since then, it didn't strike me as something to hold against him.  But this scenario is by no means a shocker to me.  The bigger the spotlight grows, the tougher it is to handle and the more fallible we appear.  I believe this is just another episode of some immaturity that he will grow from.

I think sometime in the very near future Rory will offer a mea culpa about the situation. Did he act poorly given his current status, sure but I'm not going to kill him over it. We all have had issues at home that get brought to the office whether we want them or not.

    • Knocked off #8 (a tough one to get) today with a mini driver, a chipped 9I, and about a 25-footer in the eight holes I played tonight.
    • You're right.  Side note, and funny story, the only time I can remember hitting a shot O.B. on that hole for the second shot, it was a topped shot where I started near the O.B. marker.  I wonder if I'm not getting as good a shot as I could because I'm nervous about O.B., but I'm not hesitating to hit a 4W if I get a good lie.
    • Day 262 5-12 Got an early practice session in this morning. Arms off body was the main focus with getting chest through with speed, I did much better with wrist arching through the downswing.
    • Yea, developing a proper shot zone for that approach should would be helpful. If you are bringing OB into play more than you like, then it is either needs to be an accepted reward for the risk. If you hit 10 shots from that tee ball landing area. If like 1 ball goes OB, that could be outlier shots you need to discard. If more than that is creeping in, then it is probably not the correct shot.  Maybe it needs to be more nuanced. Maybe you hit more shots OB from the left side of the hole than right due to shot shape. If you hit it left to right, maybe being on the left side makes you aim further right, bringing in OB right. It could be an aiming issue.
    • Thank you, @saevel25.  First two points, definitely, and those are things I can do.  PGA Tour average being 3.0 from 100 yards in the rough (or 160 in the fairway, per ESC) is a great reminder that a 5 is a really good score on a par-5 and the occasional six isn't anything to be upset about, as long as I played it intelligently.   I'm playing in less than a week, and I checked the three par-5s against ShotScope's 5-handicap baseline.    My last par on two of them yielded a 0.23 stroke gain (each), while the last one had -0.07 on my last par (I wonder if ShotScope measures straight-line distance, because there's some slight bending going on). Hmmm, that last one, especially with between the ropes.  I think I'll go through my past rounds later today and see where I'm losing strokes there -- I would guess it's on my second shot, since that one makes me nervous because of O.B. left and right on the second shot.  Yet, I think I can hit a hybrid from my typical tee shot landing area and have a distance wedge into the green.
