I apologized about my language and have pretty much kept any foul language under my breath since then.

I worked in the health care field and would cringe if I ever heard foul language by so-called professionals (ie doctors, nurses, techs) in the workplace or around patients.Β  Same really goes for any professional work area: what if your financial planner came to you during a visit and said "your portfolio is all ****ed up" or your cardiologist told you your heart is a piece of shit.

Just not the language you'd expect from a professional in most occupations.

If my cardiologist told me my heart was a piece of shit I would piss my pants laughing

I was good for a long time while I coached youth soccer. Β "Fudge" became the replacement word. Β "Mother Puss-Bucket" from Ghostbusters , was also a good sub although not too loud. Β Then, when the boys hit 12 or 13, you would hear them start under their breath. Β We would just say their name in a fatherly tone to set them straight.

I was coaching one game where the other team had, honestly, 5 yellow and two red cards for swearing at the ref. Β I mean full blown, Happy Gilmore, melt down swearing fits. Β We were appalled. Β Even my boys were just shaking there heads.

Now I do drop the occasional f-bomb, but only around friends and not strangers and not after a bad shot. Β I usually berate myself self with, "Scott! Β What are you doing??. Β  And of course there is the parent phrase, "WTF! Β Did you even study for that math test!"

Funny thing is the two people I know who swear like sailors are women.

I'm a mutterer....I say some stuff to myself, but I leave the screaming of profanities for others....As someone stated before, it actually makes me laugh.

How the tour pro's don't absolutely melt down & go full postal on the course after blowing a shot that could cost them potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars (ok, to put it into terms we can relate to ... the difference between missing one single putt orΒ losing a drive OB on #18 to lose by one stroke would relate to losing a NEW corvette, a NEW tournament bass boat with a V6 engine, a NEW Chevy Suburban to pull it with; and a 3rd home on a Canadian lake ... or if you prefer, a high end Ferrari) Β is incomprehensibly baffling to me Β (but strangely commendable - absolutely no way I could keep my composure as they do) ... it would be refreshing to see a tour guy go full retard on the course after losing by one missed shot.

This is just a general comment by me and not directed to any one individual.

It's called self control. Β It's a choice. Β If you can't control yourself playing a stupid game it calls into question what else in your life is out of control. Β Grow up.

I'm more of a mutterer also. Probably my favorite phrase I say to myself being, "Jesus f$%*ing Christ", which obviously requires discretion while among strangers.

I occasionally curse, mostly under my breath. Β Nothing too bad. Β I've heard some guys get pretty pissed on the course, but it really isn't the language that makes things tense and awkward, it's how infuriated they seem.

Glad I stumbled across this thread. Β I believe last week one of the Tiger-bashers was accusing us of having a double-standard with Tiger. Β He was saying that if other tour pros cursed after a bad shot, we'd give them hell for it. Β I didn't address the double-standard accusation of the post because I was busy calling him delusional for other aspects of it.

I bring this up now because I'm fairly certain that he gave the example of the "other tour pro" being Ben Crane. Β Well, this weekend, I watched Ben Crane miss a putt on the 18th hole of the championship that, at that moment, could have potentially put him in a 3 way tie for a playoff if D.A. Points had missed his subsequent putt. Β Crane left it short, and the cameras cut back to him as he turned his head and could visibly be seen uttering what appeared to be obscenities. Β You couldn't really hear what he was saying, but it seemed like it could have been a "dammit" or worse.

It simply reinforced two things for me:

1) A lot more athletes curse than some of these naive people think, and;

2) They don't have mics around them at all times to catch it.

Until you've played for millions of dollars on a single stroke, you probably don't have the experience to lecture others on self-control...let alone telling them to Grow up.

This is just a general comment by me and not directed to any one individual: I find that most people who believe they can judge others' emotional outbursts while that other person is under extreme circumstances that they've never even sniffed are mostly full of sh**.

I can curse in this thread, right?

While I've never read any of Rotella's golf psychology books, I agree with the essence of one of the tenets I've seen quoted from it - I refuse to let golf make me angry.Β  I have no money on the line (aside from the occasional small bets just for fun) and it's not putting food on my table, so it's nothing more than a game - something I'm doing because I (supposedly) enjoy it.Β  As you said, it makes me uncomfortable to play with people who get truly infuriated by something they're supposed to be enjoying.Β  Sure, I let loose occasionally over a bad shot, but that's the end of it...I suck it up, laugh it off and move on.Β  I'm the first one to make fun of my own game, and in the circle of friends I golf with, we trash each other (jokingly, of course) all day long on the course over bad shots.Β  It keeps things light-hearted and reminds us that we're out there to have fun.Β  Nothing wrong with a little outburst after a bad shot, but don't turn it into a full-on fit of rage or sulk over it for the next 3 holes.

I told this story before, but...

I wasΒ standing 4 ft fromΒ Dottie Pepper (I thinkΒ it was Mochrie back then) on the tee of a hard 185 yd par 3, and when she missed the green, she said quite angrily and not even close to quietly,Β "F*** ME!!!".Β All of us in the gallery just looked at each other like:

Ha. Β That brings up a question. Β Johnny Miller looks like a guy who could probably drop a few f-bombs back in his day. Β He was one of the guys making a big deal about Tiger's language 2 weeks ago. Β I wonder if he is being a bit hypocritical, or if he never used colorful language during the course of a round?

I think his Mormon faith kind of prohibits him from doing that, afaik.

And I find it gets old, and adds nothing to the broadcast.

And I'm the opposite of many on Johnny: I generally like the guy and what he adds.

Interesting...almost all of the statements made about swearing on the golf course being normal if not expected, comes from high handicaps. Maybe if you spent more time concentrating on your game you would play better and not have so many reasons to let go. Keeping your emotions in check is a huge dimension of the game.

I get pissed when I tank a shot but I don't think every one else on the golf course needs to hear about it. I also don't whoop it up when I drain a long putt or chip in. When you act like an idiot every time something happens out of the ordinary, people will realize you have no game.
