I usually have a pinch of Skoal Mint LC per 9 when I play golf. If it is really hot outside, I'll pick up some Skoal Citrus. I don't smoke, drink, or gamble; dip is my only vice. Does anybody else here dip and/or chew on the course? If so, what's your poison and how, if at all, does it affect your round? Smokers are welcome to share here too.

I used to dip as well. . .tried like heck not to ever spit on the greens. . .stuff was ruining my stomach, had to quit.  I've actually picked up some of that mint-fake tobacco stuff, for the really hard days.

I will NOT play alongside someone who smokes.  I have asthma, and I'm out to get some FRESH air.  I won't be a jerk, but I will politely remove myself from the group.

If I go out by myself, usually nothing. If I'm out with friends, a beer or two (sometimes 3). Last year, I was known to bring a cigar with me, but from what i've heard smoking can cause restriction of blood vessels (correct me if i'm wrong) and I need my blood vessels as unrestricted as possible ;)

I also dip. My poison is Copenhagen snuff. Usually start craving a pinch around the 4th hole and my game usually picks up lol ( guess I finally relax a little and just enjoy the game). I used to drink a few beers while I played but it tended to make me dehydrate quicker so now its just water on the course and beers after the round. I also hate smoking on the course. Especially when people leave cigerette butts on the course. Its probly my biggest pet peeve.

I'm an ex-smoker so I tend to agree. But, unless I've misunderstood, this is a thread for tobacco user to share tobacco related anecdotes and what-not. It is not a thread for non-smokers to come and preach.

You're entitled to your opinion. Tobacco has no health benefits, that's true. But full lip of skoal = breakfast of champions. Obviously, I do not spit on greens, tee boxes, etc.

I could care less if someone wants to chew tobacco, but do not spit near the green. Honestly its disgusting, and it ruins the green. Carry around an empty gatorade bottle or something.

As for other forms of tabaco. My personal preference is for them to be outlawed. To me, 2nd hand smoke is nothing short of unintentional assault. Its sad to see someone, who's never smoked, end up with lung cancer because they lived in a household were there was a smoker, or interacted around those that smoke. People shouldn't be harmed by others for living a healthy lifestyle. Since this will never happen, i tend to try to hold my breath if i walk past someone who is smoking. I doubt it will help, but its better than breathing in that poison.

Breakfast of champions? I don't know about that but if I dont have a pinch in the morning my normally calm personality is a lot more volatile.

I'm not arguing with you saevel25 because i hate 2nd smoke as well but I would expect the smog in most cities/ large towns to cause more harm to your lungs than walking by someone smoking. On another note does anyone here smoke a pipe? I will always have good memories of going hunting with my dad and him smoking his pipe when we took a break ( it is the only time he would have aanything to do with tobacco products).

I smoke during my rounds, never throw my butts on the course and avoid smoking when im walking close to someone who doesn't like it. What I really hate is all the asshats who spit sunflower seeds all over the greens!!! I Don't want to pick up your craps that has been in your mouth.

I think the majority of guys smoking cigars are trying to compensate for something.  I wish instead they'd get a Viagra prescription and deal with their problem in a manner that doesn't bother other people.  I'm not exaggerating when I say that to me the smell of a cigar is every bit as foul and obnoxious as the smell coming out of a litter box that hasn't been cleaned in a week.

I'm allergic to tobacco smoke and absolutely hate any form of smoking.  From my experience, less than one percent of smokers are actually conscientous, thoughtful people - nearly all smokers toss their damn butts on the ground but somehow don't think that's littering; I wonder what the total annual cost to taxpayers is from fighting forest and grass fires started by smokers flicking a lit cigarette on the ground.  The overwhelming majority of smokers think that if it's the outdoors, their smoke can't possibly bother anyone and if it does, the non-smoker is being unreasonable and should just move.

As a non-smoker, I tend to agree with this.  Not your take, but with the smokers sentiment that their smoke doesn't bother me, and if the smoke happens to be coming my way, rather than be unreasonable, I'll just move.

I'm all for all of the taxes we put on smokers and the regulations on all the public places we prevent them from smoking.  Totally.  I love not having to worry about cigarette smoke on the airplane or in the restaurant, or hell, for that matter, in a lot of the casinos anymore.  We've made it pretty darn inconvenient for smokers these days ... and rightfully so, I believe.  However ...

The least I can do is not give them shit about wanting to enjoy a cigarette or cigar outdoors.

(guys who toss their butts on the greens or tees when their done with them are another story though)

It's almost impossible to avoid second hand smoke on the course unless the smoker is overly considerate, no smoking in areas where you'll be near.

I agree, i am not here to argue. Its pretty much fact that 2nd hand smoke is just as bad as smoking. I have my personal opinions on it, and do not shy away from voicing them in this regard. I wont change my mind, no matter what people say about it, smokers or non-smokers. I have to agree on the large cities, and living in areas were the air quality is bad.

If you can smell the smoke, then its 2nd hand smoke. I was sitting in my car, windows down. A guy blew out smoke out of his car window from the car in front of me. I could smell the smoke from my car because the wind was blowing my way. He was in his car, and i got 2nd hand smoke because i happened to pull up behind him. You'd be shocked at how much smoke lingers in the air. Its that type of, "Their smoke can't possibly bother anyone". That's the same type of response you hear from a person who's had to much to drink, "Oh i am perfectly able to drive". Then there taking out another car. Read up on 2nd hand smoke.

Yet 99% claim that they always use an ashtray, go outside and away from others to smoke, and never, ever throw the butt out of the car window or on the ground.

There's a disconnect in what they think and say they do, vs what they actually do.  Or, that 1% that doesn't care seem to stand at the entrance of every public building, and then run into the street to fill the gutters with butts and then light up and run to their cars so they can pitch a few more out the window in front of my car.  They must be very busy.

(It's REALLY bad, and it's bad everywhere.  But, because of this, whenever I actually, personally, see the rare smoker truly trying to be courteous in the ways the others just claim to, I'll go out of my way to thank them.)

I wish guys on my course would heed that advice. Plus the cigar smokers who leave giant ash bugs on the greens.

I used to enjoy a cigar during a round of golf but not anymore. I find it kind of distracting.

    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
