I've played Oakmont, Merion, and a few other highly ranked courses, but I've been quite content playing relatively few. I like good challenges, particularly those I know well enough to understand the challenge. New golf courses - at today's prices - have never been terribly appealing to me.

Pebble Beach - overpriced
Whistling Straits - awesome
Honers Course - hilly
Los Angeles - perfect shape
Kiawah - great
Shoal Creek - good course except it is in Alabama
Spyglass - very hard
Black Wolf Run - almost as good as golf gets
Peachtree GC - overrated
Valley Club of Montecito - beautiful
Long Cove - Best on the island - not the best in the area though
East Lake - one of the best golf courses
Hawks Ridge - one bad hole is 18
Congressional - always in great shape (unless there is snow!)
Harbour Town - way way overrated, too expensive, the only time it is in good shape is when the pros are there. Pros play a completely different course than those paying $300 to play there. (no roll, greens are not a good, etc.)

Both Pumpkin Ridge courses used to be on the list and they are both wonderful courses. Fair but tough. That is all I want in a course.

I am not surprised but thankfully none of the Robert Trent Jones Alabama Trail courses are on there - the majority of them suck when it comes to condition and slow play.

In the bag:

Titleist 904F 15*
Titleist 904F 19*

TPC Sawgrass, a shockingly fair test from a course designer who I don't really enjoy, this one is a gem. Walking around from 16 - 17 like a pro does will always be a great memory, and one I can relive each year when I watch the tournament on TV.

I've played

Pumpkin ridge - Good, but I've played many better courses

Harvester - Awesome course, cheap.

The Dunes - Overrated. At least 10 other courses in the Myrtle beach area alone I'd rate higher.

TPC Myrtle Beach -Excellent, one of the best in Myrtle Beach

Caledonia Gold and Fish club - Should be number one course in the country.  Gorgeous drive into course, historic plantation clubhouse, 17 beautiful, distinct holes. Best finishing hole I've ever played.  IMHO Mike Strantz was the finest GC architect to have ever lived.  Afterthought 9th hole the only blemish in an otherwise perfect golf experience.

TPC Deere Run - Good course, a few nice views.  Good have done better with the land, though.

I've played zero courses on the best 100 list, and zero courses on the worldwide list ... and only Torrey Pines South on the Best Public list.  Several of the courses on the public list are on my bucket list, but for now, the only other one I know I'm gonna tick off is Pelican HIll South ... in February.

I've driven by Shinnecock, National Golf Link of America, and Sebonack, walked around The Country Club. Probably not what the OP had in mind. :-)

Oh yeah ... well I've actually (accidentally) driven ONTO Riviera CC, so beat that!  Was on a residential side street and, presumably, the maintenance entrance beyond the tennis courts was open.  Almost drove onto the first fairway.  Whoops.

My cousin who is an investment hedge fund mgr has played 94-100 from like 2005 and makes me sick how many gr8 courses he has played and belongs to Conway Farms (BMW course) in Chicago.

My broke ass has played

#7 Pebble Beach  Shot 82  46-36 lol  Glad I spent the $ and did it 1 time

#16 Whistling Straits  88 from tips like a dummy in blistering winds. Much better course and value than Pebble

#33 Castle Pines  Best customer service of any place I've ever been related to golf. Had a blast

#60 Dallas National From Dallas and it is best around

#63 Blackwolf Run Can't play Whistling w/o playing this one. Magnificent layout

Also played Torrey South, Ocean Course in Cabo, KoOlau on Oahu, TPC Las Colinas, TPC Scottsdale, and several in Vegas that compare to these as well

What about Oakland Hills was disappointing? I've walked it a number of times and it looks like a fantastic course. Are you referring to the South course?

What about Oakland Hills was disappointing? I've walked it a number of times and it looks like a fantastic course. Are you referring to the South course?

Yes, the South.  I did not find the holes all that memorable.  The caddies were just a couple of junior high school kids.  The course is a top notch parkland-style course but the setting is nothing special without the history of all the major championships ,etc...  Would I rank Oakland Hills - South higher than 99% of the courses I have played?  Yes.  But for a "Top 10" course it didn't measure up to me, personally.

The OP asked to describe the courses in one word.  I could have said "Trees" or "History" but the word I posted was the first that popped into my head.

    • I don’t know why my swing got so vertical there. That wasn’t normal.    What did you mean by point 3? I get the hip turn portion.
    • It is. So, just 2 and 3 above now. 😄
    • Hopefully this one is better
    • Patrick Cantlay's strokes gained from 2024: I wonder if he takes more time on approach shots given that was the worst part of his game last season. And then here are his 2023 stats: Much better ball striking season. I wonder if there are any differences in his times between these two seasons. I tend to think he's just slow in general, but it'd be interesting to see his time differences.
    • Not sure, I think players have their own pace. Speith was always slow, regardless if he was in contention or not. Well, more so when he was in contention. It might be a push there on that question.
