  1. 1. Has Sergio Garcia officially taken this too far?

    • Yes. He shouldn't have said that.

    • No. That remark wasn't racist.

What is racist about making that statement?  People need to get a better understanding of racism.  If the PGA tour wouldn't allow Tiger Woods to play in their Association because of his skin color, THAT would be racist.  Sergio joking about serving tiger fried chicken is just a stupid joke, based on a cultural stereotype.  As a society, we allow for cultural or racial stereotypes, as long as they're positive (Asians are good at math, black guys have bigger schlongs), or as long as they're targeted toward the dominant cultural group (white men can't jump).  The last remark, at the very least, is a racial remark, because it's based from a biological perspective.  A black guy eating fried chicken isn't racial, it's a cultural stereotype, and not even a very good one at that.

Sergio comes across as a bozo, but if we strive for accuracy, let's call a spade a spade...oops, I hope I didn't offend anybody with my "racist" remark.

This was a very stupid comment that Sergio made. I believe all racists comments are stupid vindictive and of no use for man kind. My conclusion is Sergio is a very stupid racist and his punishment will be felt in his wallet when Taylormade/Addidis decide to drop his endorsements. It is sad but Sergio brought this all on himself!

I truly believe Sergio isn't a racist.  Was the comment and the context in which the comment was said a racist remark, absolutely. However, all this really does is confirm and give insight to Sergio's lack of judgement and character.  In some ways, this insight explains his golf game.  We have seen Sergio throw clubs, beat the crap out of the sand in a bunker and even spit into a cup on the green. We have also seen him completely implode after Greg Norman's daughter left him, so much so that I feel that was the single most detrimental blow to his golf game.  Ever since Morgan Norman, Sergio has never been the same.

I thought Sergio's apology was fair and honest.  But this won't be the first time he said something so ridiculously stupid before thinking.  Just look back to his self deprecating post round press conferences whenever he failed on the golf course.

So, my assessment of Sergio after all of this is that he needs help.  He clearly has a self destructive nature, speaks before he thinks and is an extremely weak person.  Sure, he may boast that he can speak out about Tiger and that he won't back down but usually, saying that is an indication of weakness and most passive aggressive people are very, very weak.  A stronger person would have the balls to approach Tiger on the golf course immediately after the issue happened, face to face, man to man.  A coward does it after the fact behind your back.......

It's a pity because the guy is an extreme golf talent, and may actually be a good guy.....but it's his character and weak nature that severely holds him back.

Oh, and keep Tiger's name out of his mouth. As a Black man, I viewed his comments not racist but utterly ignorant, jealously-driven, and insensitive.

Do your talking at the Winner's Circle, not at the bottom of the 17th at TPC Sawgrass.

This.

We can debate whether his comments were racial/racist. That's not really the point. What is the point is he's a douchenozzle for even saying such things. Why does Tiger occupy so much space in your head, Sergio?

Every time he opens his mouth, jealousy comes out.

One good thing to come out of all this is that I now have a new name for guys who purposely yell just when you're ready to tee off.

Oh Christ. That's totally going to happen isn't it? I hope they crack down on that like Samuel Jackson in Pulp Fiction.

Is Sergio a racist? I have no clue, and don't care enough to know.

Was his comment racist? Pretty much.

The guy could have said a host of other meals, but he chose fried chicken because of the racial intonation behind it. Yes, it's based on a stereotype, and that same stereotype is often used in insulting ways.

I read an article that stated Sergio claims to have never heard of the Fuzzy Zoeller (sp?) situation.  So unless that article was wrong, you can put that one to rest.

I don't think Sergio is necessarily a racist person, but the comment was indubitably racial.  There is no denying that.  But the reality is that racism is becoming less and less of the conscious hatred of cultures that it used to be.  Just in the last few months we've had public officials use racial epithets very casually in public fora, and when confronted about the comments they've insisted they aren't racist.  I know a person that told me he believes Mexicans have "inferior brain functions" but insists he isn't racist because he works and hangs out with some (I know for a fact that he does hang out/party with a few).

The new "racist" isn't the segregationist and oppressive institution it used to be, it's the ignorant stereotyping and generalizing based on something that has no logical relationship to the stereotype.  There is still plenty of that to go around, and this thread is illustrative of the fact that there is still plenty of racists out there who have a huge problem with people being "sensitive" to something that is racially inappropriate.

Or Sergio was lying.  I find it hard to believe that he had not heard of Fuzzy situation.  I did not even play or follow golf then, and I can remember it.

No, maybe YOU need to learn a better understanding of racism.  If the PGA tour wouldn't allow Tiger Woods to play in their Association because of his skin color, that would be a manifestation of racism.  The racism would be their mental state in concluding somehow that because Tiger was either Asian or Black that he wasn't fit for the tour.  Not allowing him to play is a manifestation of the racism.

Very possible that he was lying.  However, even if he was lying, it would still prove that he wasn't making a joke-like homage to the Fuzzy comments.

Douchenozzle isn't in the O.E.D, but it should be!

The Guardian reports Garcia said: “We will have him round every night. We will serve fried chicken.”

The newspaper says Garcia released a statement through the European Tour: “I apologise for any offence that may have been caused by my comment on stage during The European Tour Players’ Awards dinner. Sergio made a remark that is routinely aimed to make light of a certain race in a derogatory manner -- therefore, I'd call it a racist remark.

I'm curious...If there was no racial intent, then why the need for an apology?

    • Matt, the equation is simple from my perspective. Stronger the grip, greater the potential of application for twist torque at impact. And if it it is combined with an extreme outward path as you say, god help you. Not too many skilled players with super strong grips, are there? Sure, it's all about match-ups but the connection to super strong grips and duck hooks is common from what I see and have dealt with myself.

    • I have been a big follower of this technology ever since I saw Positive Putters display at a golf show in the Revealer they invented and patented. That would have been around 2000. It made sense to me that staying target line balanced was a better way of balancing.  Early models of these putters were often too flat for me and I struggled to hole more putts. I was fascinated by all of them - Positive Putters, the Railgun, the SeeMore blades and the Backstryke. I have tried the DF1, which was great for long putts, and currently use the DF3. I am still really good at long putts with the DF3 3, having made a 90’ putt and a 34’ putt in my last two rounds. My first round with the DF3 I only had 24 putts making almost 200’ of putts. I don’t quite use the putter the way they suggest- I don’t swing harder, and only a little longer, on longer putts. All my putts are at the same tempo, or strive to be. Therefore, I am swinging harder on longer putts. I do love putting with the DF 3 and I have become much better at putting through 50-60 mm gates at home, rarely hitting the sides.
