Mine is official and correct at the time I posted it but not current. I participated in GHIN and posted but did not rejoin last year. I haven't signed up this year, so it is about 14 months old. My game has not changed so I feel it is pretty close--14.9 is certainly not a "vanity handicap", LOL, and I don't play in any official handicap tournaments, or for that matter any tournaments at all other than an occasional charity scramble or business outing. Also this year, I have been playing a lot with my vintage clubs so I am not sure that it would be appropriate to include those rounds.

I would like to return to participation in GHIN, and work on my handicap, but I do feel that 14.9 is a reasonable indication. I basically play a little better than bogey, but not a lot. I might have 4 pars and a birdie, and then 2 bogies, a double and an 8.

Fire that thing back up!  I'd think it would be interesting to compare your rounds/trend when playing with vintage clubs too.  My bet is that you don't find a significant difference.

Just as a rough guess I would say I average .5 birdies 4.5 pars and 6.5 bogies per round.  I am and have been very close to an 18 HC for all this time so against a scratch player I would get a stroke on every hole.  I don't think many scratch golfers average .5 eagles and 4.5 birdies per round.  I also doubt that they average 2.75 doubles or worse (that would be my triples or worse) but in that case I hope my teammate has a good hole or in a skins game that the good players tie.

I find this very interesting.  I don't keep stats like this (all of a sudden wish I did) - but I think I can comfortably say that I DO NOT average half a birdie and almost 5 pars per round.  But my handicap is less than yours.  That sounds like really good golf to me.  I'd bet I play 4-5 rounds in between birdies.

You say " I don't think many scratch golfers average .5 eagles and 4.5 birdies per round. "  Sure they don't.  But I don't think many 18 caps are getting your stats either. Five of 18 holes played at under par?  And that is average for you?

I doubt many 18 caps can cherry pick two holes in an average round to come out to under par - much less five.  What is the average score for an 18 cap?  95 or so? If your average score is 23 over and 5 of those are under par and 7 of them at 7 over (per your bogies/round), you need to shot 17 over for the remaning 6 holes - or triple bogey average.  As an uneducated guess, I'd say that someone so prone to triple bogeys is unlikely to shoot that many pars and birdies.  Seems like Equitable Stroke Control would start to play some part in this.

Maybe we just take a different route to the end score.  I guess your good hole are better than my good ones and your bad holes are worse than my bad ones and it all evens out.  That is pretty interesting.

He says .5 birdies per round, as in 1/2 of a birdie each round, or 1 birdie every two rounds.  You may have missed the decimal point, I did too.

P.S. Also, the odds are probably a little better in "non-tournament" rounds. So maybe 80,000 rounds will be enough. :D

No, I caught it.  I took his 4.5 pars/round and the .5 birdies/round and added them together to make 5 full holes.  These 5 holes would be played at 1/10 of a stroke under par if my math is right. Something like that.

That'll get you a frequent player status somewhere!

His stats look good because he doesn't play much. Those averages would likely be lower with more reported scores if his HI is legit. I was just looking through my stats and sorting them by last 5 rounds brings up my scoring averages considerably.

I think I see what you mean - but I'm not totally sure I follow.  If you were trending in a good direction that would make sense.  But it also sounds like you are saying that an 18 cap who doesn't play very often is good a pars and birdies.  Maybe if he is actually a pretty good golfer, but due to not playing much has many blow-up holes since he doesn't play much?

I know what you guys mean when you say you don't update your handicap as quickly after a bad round.

I played this saturday and it was awful. Actually some of the holes were ok, but I had a couple of blow ups that just killed me. I completely lost my swing with my 3 wood. That had been a strength of my game recently, and on one hole I hit my 3 wood 4 (!!!!) times because I kept hitting it fat and going about 10 yards. I finally figured it out, on about the last hole. But it sure was frustrating. All of my rounds had been trending up recently, and I took a big step back this weekend.

I am playing again this afternoon, so hopefully I can improve a little.

Look at the stats. His instance of birdie is less than everything else but other, which is triple or worse. As more scores are added the majority of it will fall between par and double. As those numbers go up the birdie stat goes down.

Look at his stats again.  You are misinterpreting something.  Max is averaging a half a birdie and 4.5 pars per round.  The remaining 13 holes are over par.  He could very easily be an 18 handicap with 7 bogies and 5 doubles and 1 worse than double per round (which is about what his chart seems to indicate - 7 + 10 + 3 = 20 over par).

I must be.  Maybe I overestimated what it takes to be an 18 cap.  I'm coming up with something similar to you - but it doesn't sound right to me.

You are saying that someone who averages 20 over can be an 18.  And by your count, the 7(bogeys) + 10 (doubles) + 1 (triple) gets him there.  Which obviously it does.  But it seems unlikely to me that a person who hits double or worse on 6 of the 18 holes gets that many pars per round and a birdie every other round.

But by my numbers, it's even worse. I've heard that a person plays to their handicap once every 5 rounds or so.  And if so, I doubt they would shoot within 2 shots of it on average (which would be your 20 over).  I don't know what the answer is, but in my math above I estimated more like 23 over as the average.  By his own stats, his average is 23.82 over. By these numbers, he would need to go from 6 or 7 over par after 12 holes - then go to almost 24 over in those last 6 holes - or about 18 over for these 6 holes.  That is triple bogey for all 6!  Who makes triple bogey for a third of your round on average, but is good enough to get 5 pars and a possible birdie?

Does that sound common to everyone? Maybe I am having trouble getting my mind around it because I just play a different style of golf than he does. I am close to an 18 now and was right around 18 for about a year.  And in my experience - if I get 4 or 5 pars and maybe even a birdie in a given round, I'm basically shooting or breaking 90 that day. And Max is doing this on average - but shooting 96.

I seem to be the odd man out, and hijacking the thread, so I'll drop it.  But when I read it - the numbers didn't work for me and I thought it was interesting.

    • Day 11: 2/16/2025 Rince and Repeat: Just like yesterday I spent several 5-10 minute sessions working on what I learned on Friday.
    • Quick update. So, I got the PXG Secret Weapon and I have to say I like it... mostly. (see below) I spent some time with it on the range and I even gathered some data in doors. I'm not going to post data yet, as my swing is still a bit of a work in progress and I'd like to gather some more data after I settle down a little bit more. But here's my review.  First as a driver replacement. ... IMO it is not a replacement, it's clearly more of a supplement... for me anyway. Not long enough to really replace the driver. For me it's about 20 yards short of my driver. It is longer than my 30-wood off the tee. (15 yards-ish) I will say it is easier to hit off the tee than my 3-wood. I get some of my best shots teeing it low, but I also get some of my worst. If I tee it about a full inch off the ground I get very consistent shots. Super repeatable. Amazingly repeatable even with my messy swing. Off the tee, I find it draw biased just a bit. You can tinker with the set up if that isn't your personal cup of tea.  As a 3-wood replacement. For me it's about perfect. It's longer than my 3-wood off the deck (my data showed 10 yards longer) and it has a gentle fade to it, which I love. You do need a clean lie, but I never hit my 3-wood off anything but a clean lie anyway. I found it interesting that I hit a gentle fade off the deck and a slight draw off a tee. I'm sure that's not uncommon. Again, you can tinker with the set up to optimize that if you wanted to... I don't want to.  It's clearly a lot longer than my 3-wood off the tee. Easier to hit off the tee than my 3 wood, and off the deck it's also longer. So, it's a no-brainer 3-wood replacement for me. I will say that over the years I've learned to use my 3-wood for this low-flying-100-yard-punch-out-from-under-a-tree shot.  I'll have to see if the Secret Weapon can handle that duty. But it's going in the bag to replace the 3-wood.  I also turned my 5-wood down from 19 degrees to 17 degrees. ... Incidentally my 3-wood had been 16 degrees. I used to always hit my 5 wood and my hybrid about the same distance. This adjustment helps my gapping a bit at the top of the bag. I can clearly hit my 5-wood farther than my hybrid now.  Overall on the PXG Secret Weapon. The good: It's clearly longer and easier to hit off the tee than my 3-wood. It's a bit longer off the deck than my 3-wood.  It's super forgiving... surprisingly so.  It's uber adjustable. ... Although I do suggest getting fit for it. That will save you having to (or wanting to) buy a weight kit just to try out the infinite number of set ups. The headcover is super cool.  The maybe not so good: Shots out of the middle sound great. Shots off the heal sound great. Shots off the toe sound ... what's the work... clangy? It's very forgiving off the toe and the heal. The flight and the distance are incredibly consistent. But the sound off the toe isn't great.  For me I tend to draw it off the tee and fade it off the deck. You can set it up to be biased either way, but in my hands I think if I set up a draw off the deck, that might induce a duck hook off the tee. ... In fairness that could also be where my swing is at right now.  It's pretty spendy. ... If I really stop and think about it, I paid $450 for a new 3-wood. Granted it's a better performing 3-wood. But for me it's really a 3-wood replacement.
    • I've got my pain mostly under control and the meds are working.   I'd like to join.
    • I would definitely attend if my calendar allows.
    • Finland: I've played Mid-Night Golf in Finland. Really cool. I looked at the schedule for my week out there and I saw that we were teeing off at 9PM... Feels weird, 9 PM tee time. But it was really great. We finished well after 1AM and sat around and drank on the golf course terrace. It was cool. It's really easy to loose track of time when the sun doesn't set.  Here's a picture of me in Finland hitting my approach on the final hole. It's roughly 1:30AM in this photo.  Egypt: Another cool experience was playing golf in Egypt. The entire course is sand. The greens are called browns, cuz they are just sand with oil poured on them and pounded down a bit. Your ball gets kind of oily when you putt, but the caddy cleans it for you after each hole. You carry around a little piece of fake grass (maybe 2 foot square) and place your ball on it each time before you hit. That is except when you go into a sandtrap. The sandtraps are just areas marked off where you don't get to use your little piece of astro-turf. Sometimes they are dug down a bit to make a bunker, sometimes not.  Spain: No special events or anything, but I played a bunch of golf in Spain in the mid-1990's. At that time Spain's economy wasn't doing the best and Europe hadn't quite switched to the Euro. So Spain was using the Peseta. The country of Spain has some incredibly breathtaking courses. (incredible scenery in general) But because of the conversion from the dollar to the Peseta (If memory serves it was 150 to 1), I got to play them for what I remember as being incredibly inexpensive prices. Gorgeous country and really nice people.  Holland or The Netherlands: I lived for a couple of years in what's called The Flevoland in Holland. It's one of the Dutch provinces and it's all land that was recovered from the sea. So, it's all under sea-level. One of the courses I played a few times out there had flags on every hole to show just how deep the water would be if it wasn't for the dams.
