I give Trainwreck a birdie. If you like Amy Schumer's comedy, you'll like this movie. It's a movie that tells a story with good characters that have funny moments, it's not just a collection of "bits" or skits. Mistake I think a lot of comedies get into.

I was just about to post the same movie, same review - birdie. LeBron James is a pretty decent actor as well. I think the lead male (the guy from SNL whose name I can't remember) was a little ridiculous - an award-winner from Doctor's Without Borders who was also a surgeon for the top athletes in MLB, NBA, and NFL - but we're not going for stark realism in a slapstick comedy. Amy Schumer is hilarious, though. I honestly think her show is a bit overrated - every progressive arts and news publication drools over it - but she does a great job of humanizing raunchy, awkward situations to make them very plausible and satirical instead of just sleazy for shock's sake. The bits with Jon Cena as her boyfriend in this movie are great.

Took son to see Minions last weekend ... bogey at best.

Those creatures are great as supporting characters when the movie centers around Steve Carrell, his daughters, Kristen Wiig, Jason Segel, and Russell Brand, but they can't carry their own movie.  (Kid liked it though)

If we want to talk about under-rated animated movies that appear more to adults, then lets talk Megamind .  This is one of my favorites, (next to Rango) and I'd give it an easy birdie .  Will Ferrell and Tina Fey are hilarious, and the soundtrack (AC/DC, Guns N Roses, etc) is great.

I get why you gave Minions a bogey @Golfingdad and you're in the majority. Something about the slapstick that makes me laugh when I usually don't.

Rango was an underrated movie, one of my animation favorites. Maybe people suffering from Johnny Depp overexposure.

I should also mention that my rating may have been a little clouded by the fact that the 30 minutes of the movie was really, really uncomfortable to me because of how bady I had to go to the bathroom.  But it was just me and my son and he's still young enough that he would have freaked out if I left him alone in there for a few minutes and I didn't want to make him miss any part of the ending, so I was just fidgeting a lot and praying for it to end. ;)  Thank god he didn't want to stay for the credits.

Agree with you about the Johnny Depp overexposure.  (But that movie is fantastic.)  It's a really good film that just happens to be animated, as opposed to a animated film for kids that just happens to be good. If that makes sense. :)  Also, Timothy Oliphants Clint Eastwood impersonation is impressive.

I enjoyed it. I laughed all the way through. Thing is, I didn't laugh at any of the slapstick in Inside Out. All the physical comedy involved with Fear. Something built in funny w/the Minions. Like Larry, Curly and Moe. But scenes like going inside the room not supposed to in Inside Out. That was gut busting funny,

That's encouraging.   I don't need a story line.   One funny slapstick after another works for me.   I need the laughs.   Trump isn't providing enough.

Yeah, I don't mind the slapstick.  I guess I just feel like they are just a bit played out.  It's more to do with the way they talk, I think.  They're like little yellow Jar-Jar Binks' but instead of bastardizing urban slang, they're bastardizing Spanish(ish). ;)

And I'm probably coming across harsher than I mean to.  Plenty of funny things in the movie (Orlando, the family on their way to Orlando, Scarlett's husband was great) but I'd just rather they made another Despicable Me with the Minions staying in their supporting roles.

That was Jon Hamm, doing the anti Don Draper. Fun hearing him play, rather voice, such an opposite to his stereotype.

The Maze Runner -  Lipped out Par into a Bogey

It was entertaining to watch but you definitely have to limit your "but wait that doesn't make sense thoughts on the multiple plot holes book is supposed to explain some of the plot holes)".  I'll watch the second one when it comes out on HBO or Netflix.  But it wasn't the worst movie to watch.

I can't remember if I posted this one before.

I'll give it a par. Young actors are not always polished so I tend to give them some leeway. I thought the primary actors were did well enough. The issue with movies made for trilogy is that they tend to not stand up well alone.

The books did better in giving you more information. They probably could have done better with some subtexts in the movie.

I enjoyed it enough to give it a par.

I'm a little tired of the YA movies. Hunger, Divergent, Potter, etc... I still find myself watching some of them. I guess I can't turn away a future dystopian society movie or a twist on Lord of the Flies. This movie has been on HBO for awhile.

I should probably check out the books sometime.  It seems like movie studios love to make trilogies into movies, except the trilogies always seem to make it into 4 movies.

I've liked the Hunger Games movies so far.  They have been entertaining, the first one was the best of the bunch.

I've only seen bits and pieces of Divergent, I should watch it again.

I loved the Harry Potter movies, plus I've read all of the books.  I watch them when they are on, which is a lot, if there is nothing else on.

I remember really enjoying the Maze Runner movie; saw it in a theater and was blown away. I was expecting mediocre at best; it's probably second only to the first Percy Jackson on my favorite movies aimed at that demographic. On a different note, I'm going to see the new Mission: Impossible tomorrow. I haven't seen 2-3-4 since they were in theaters; I remember really enjoying 4 and not caring for 2 and 3. Those who remember them better: should I see them again? I won't before tomorrow, just wondering if they need to get into the queue.

    • Day 36: 15 balls, same as last few days. Then a little indoor putting.
    • hey guys, sorry about the kind of short notice, but i'm not going to be able to make it to the outing this year....
    • Had to correct the distance - should have read 5,400 not 5,500  yds.
    • Had to report this one - played Minnesott again today with my son.  We played behind the Friday Men's group and had a decently paced round.  My round started off par-par-bogie.  I was feeling good to be +1 through three.  Played the next two par - par and then disaster hits - well I thought it may be the unravelling of +1 through five.  Tee shot on six is a hard pull hook into the ditch separating four and six.  I know the ball is lost and re-tee - hitting three off the tee on this par five.  Long story short - what should have been at worst a bogie became a triple 8.  Now I'm +4 through six holes.  Get a solid par on seven (which I celebrated as a solid recovery hole).  Eight is a birdie and I'm back to three over.  Nine, a par 3 over water, finishes par for a 39 front.   We roll to the back to where I birdie ten (the toughest hole on the back) to be -1 after the first hole on the back, +2 for the round.  Par eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen and fifteen - that was an in the zone moment.  Have to note that fourteen - the second par 3 on the back - I hit the tee shot just short right of the flag.  Easy pitch with the 56 should put me close for a tap in par.  It does not happen - as I duff the pitch to about 3yds closer.  I reset and this time I nip it nicely only to see it land and slowly roll to the cup and drop in for a chip-in par save ( a first).   We get to sixteen and I am thinking this could be a really good round.  It's also a par 5 and I hit a solid tee shot.  I'm about 220 from the center of the green and figure I can layup with the 3w as there is a nice landing area in front of the green and it would play nicely into the typical distance I hit this club.  I'm sitting about 50 yds from the flag to the right hand side.  I overcook the 56 and see the ball bounce off the back of the turtle green.  I hit an easy 56 again to see the ball roll to the other side of the green.  Long story it became a 3putt double.  Now I am +4 through sixteen.  The last two holes are solid pars - one an up and down, the other a GIR two putt. Finished the back 1 over at 37.  Total score is a 76!  A new personal best.  Best "all around" play through the bag to date.
    • Day 562, May 17, 2024 Spent a LOT of time on GEARS stuff today, so while waiting for imports, exports, and all manner of things, I did some rehearsals in the mirror and camera in my basement.
