Yes. And it's been done.

I recently saw the director's cut of Gettysburg (1993). It has a run time of 4 hours, 31 minutes. Yea... it's pretty epic.Β

I'll give it a birdie. By the end, it's so long that you feel almost as worn out and beaten up as the soldiers probably do. OK, I'm exaggerating, but it's a long slog... but it feels worth it in the end. There were two very memorable moments/scenes in it that I'd put up there with any in all of cinema.Β

There are certainly things to criticize sure, but IMO the good far outweighs the bad. Man, I can't believe actual human beings did the stuff portrayed in this movie. Insanity.Β

And of course, with any interesting movie, there wwere a lot of awesome performances... Jeff Daniels, Tom Berenger... I even enjoyed Martin Sheen's Robert E. Lee most of the time. But Richard Jordan really stole the show for me, in his final role before dying of cancer.Β

Pretty epic flick.Β

What's another 4 hours? Consensus is not as good though.

It's only 3 hours and 39 minutes!

The reviews leave a lot to be desired for that kind of time commitment haha. 8% on Rotten Tomatoes, yikes!

The Rookie, with Dennis Quaid. Par. Exactly what you expect.

The Rock, with Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery… TBD. I'm only 15 minutes again. (I've seen it before, of course.)

I re-watchedΒ The AccountantΒ just now. I give it a par. It's entertaining.

I feel like the movie could have been a birdie or an eagle with a few differences. Two off the top of my head.

  • Have the accountant be his autistic self, and have his brother be the muscle. That the same guy wasΒ the better fighter AND the accountant is a bit corny.
  • Spend a whole movie investigating what it's like to have the duo (or just the one accountant) actually do the accounting for various criminal groups.

Ultimately the storyline about the stupid robotics firm is a bit thin. I don't care about those players, and the "math" which could actually be a little interesting was glossed over in such a way that it wasn't interesting at all.

I Β saw the new version of Jumanji.Β

I am giving it a tap in birdie. I really enjoyed this movie. They put a good twist on this movie. I like the references to the first Jumanji movie.Β This might be Dwane Johnsons's best action comedy movie to date. Jack Black is hilarious. Definitely worth seeing in theaters.Β

Funnily enough, I just watched another Jack Black movie… The Holiday. Also with Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, and Jude Law.

I liked it. It's pretty well done, and you like all of the characters. If it weren't just so perfect, and so corny (both referring to the story, and I don't mean it was perfectly done, I mean it was a bit too "perfect" how well the couples met and fell in love and all that hooey), it'd be a birdie, because it's entertaining and fun and all that.

Overall I give it a tap-in par. It's a good movie.

It's also one of those Rotten Tomatoes split decisions: 47% critics, 80% audience. And because it's a Rom-Com, you know the 80% is brought down by the men, so it's probably closer to 85% or so.

I've enjoyed some of his other movies. Specifically to Jumanji he was asked to play specific role, and he didn't miss a beat. I wouldn't classify this as a typical Jack Black type of role.Β

Phantom Thread, birdie. Not what I expected, and that was good. Haunting soundtrack. Daniel Day Lewis is a great actor, but his opposite star, Alma, gave even a more amazing performance. And I'm not crazy about Paul Thomas Anderson's other movies, I enjoyed Punch Drunk Love and Boogie Nights, but a little meh on the rest, never saw Hard 8.
