Actually, it's good you did let out a cheer. Birdies don't happen that often.

Just tell your kid that that old guy was just jealous that he probably never got one, and throughout life there will be miserable wretches that are jealous of your achievements. Just ignore them and move on.

Well you said the OP was wrong for celebrating his sons first birdie so I think that's much the same, I would do the same if my 10 year old daughter did that also so the way I see it is some people take this game too serious for how they play it.

With respect to the birdie putt I was referring to the original poster's situation and his son making a birdie putt and your comment " It is never ok to yell since it is disrespectful".

This was not just a regular golfer in a group getting a birdie but someone's young son making a birdie for the first time. As a parent I still remember my son's first birdie and I am sure I was cheering loudly about it.

It is a very proud moment for any parent.

If they were the group in front of me I would have gone over and celebrated with them and offered to take a picture of the moment.

Attitudes like those old farts is what will kill this game.

I know that I had to offer up all sorts of bribes and encouragement just to get my son to play when he was young.

Golf was not as exciting as hockey or soccer to him.

How discouraging is it to get yelled at just because they were celebrating the son's first birdie.

I've been playing golf for 40 years and there are not many moments I remember, but I do remember my first birdie.  Been playing for quite a while before I got one.  Typical slice with a wood club on a Par 3 to about 2  feet.  Putt was a nail biter.

No outward cheers but I was pretty happy none the less.

@Fourputt , I don't think anyone is arguing that it's ok to run around the course hootin' and hollerin' but, c'mon man, were talking about a young kid getting his first birdie. Hell, I'm 40 and I am still known to get a little over-excited when I sink a (rare) birdie. I don't holler, just a fist pump or something but I'm 40 and hollering is exhausting. If I ever get my kids into the game you can bet your ass I'll be making a big deal out of their first birdie. With all the hand-wringing going on over the decline of the game and widespread closures of courses you'd think the self-proclaimed stewards of the game would be a little more encouraging when it come's to new players especially when they are kids with unknown potential.

I see people bitch and moan about the first tee kids using up practice stalls and tee times and I don't want to go any further cause it just pisses me off.

Being a young player myself I do think that yelling is not necessarily the best thing to do on a golf course. However with that being said I don't really see a problem with someone getting excited after making a shot. Me and my friends often do this and nobody really says anything. I would also like to add that the older player yelling at you is doing the same thing he's yelling at you for. Two wrongs don't make a right old man...My point is that if your excited show it, not obnoxiously but a little yell or cheer is fine. Second, don't let anyone else discourage your golf game. Its hard enough to play as it is haha.

Wow!  Somehow I thought this would get one or two comments but I see this is a very active forum. There were some really good comments and some great advice given here.  I will definitely try to use some of this great advice if anything like this should ever happen again.

If the group behind me is playing with their kid, and the kid gets a birdie, I am absolutely OK with them letting out a whoop of joy and high-fiving.  And, yes, I would just take a mulligan.  This isn't the US Open.

Not to be that guy , but if I witness something great like this in my group, I'll let out a cheer and I don't really care about what anyone else thinks. My son is 2 and will one day (hopefully!) take up golf. I'll cheer every accomplishment as a proud dad would/should. There's a difference between a "Yeah!" and some laughter, or a "Hell yeah! Woo!" and some lunatic running around screaming for 10-20 seconds.

People really need to size up their underwear and Lacoste polo's a bit and breathe. One thing I hate is an uppity snob who can't enjoy themselves or other people and accomplishments in general. If I were paired up with someone like that, I'd politely tell them to play on and up. I'm not letting them bring me down to share in their misery.
