@iacas, what was wrong with the graphics you used for the indiegogo page? The scorecard, pencil, tee and other assorted crap? I thought that looked good, could make a good cover and the presence of the scorecard kinda makes your point early on.

I tried that, and it didn't look great. It could have easily been my execution, but we didn't like it much at all. I made it such that it spanned the whole cover (front, back, and spine) and faded it out. I probably didn't even fade it out enough, but any more faded and I'm not sure what the point is. :)

What about just a picture of a ball mark on a green with (or without) a ball next to it? I'm just thinking something simple because you have decent amount of text going on, don't want the image to be distracting.

Right. 5.5 x 8.5 is not a big canvas.

I'm trying to avoid photos because I'd have to worry about fading them out to display the text, and the bleed, etc.

Have you considered just putting Paulina Gretzky on the cover?

:-P

Then change the title to, "How to Score" and double your sales.

What if you washed out the scorecard image so it was softer and the graphics were bolder in relation.  I like the idea of a scorecard or some symbol of one.  You could focus down on two or three holes on the card.  The point of the book is your score and how to lower it.

It's a photo, so it's got that going against it. We could fade it out entirely at the edges, though, and that would minimize or eliminate that concern.

The other is just how small 5.5 x 8.5 is. With the text, it may start to look cluttered.

But… our original idea was the scorecard. We felt it would stand out on a book shelf. But it's dropped in our standings, TBH.

Why don't you use a colored matte behind the text?

We could, but that even further limits the available space. Know what I mean?

I don't think we're going with a photo, unless it's one I can take myself, and one which doesn't require much to fade it or block it out.

5.5 x 8.5 is not big. With the title, subtitle, and the names, it's almost cluttered already.

I'm not exactly sure how you'd do it, but incorporating some sort of leaderboard would be good in my opinion.  Maybe set it up so you have a bunch of names and scores and at the top you put the title of the book instead of where the name of the event would go?

Maybe something like this... obviously it'd be a different leaderboard, etc...

Maybe a sort of infographic, if you could call it that, inspired by the aim for the center of the green, an unintuitive concept you've said you tested and write about.  Something like a graphic/illustration, maybe from a 45˚ downward view (so sort of like the view they use in the graphic video hole fly-bys?), with a golfer in finish pose at the bottom of the graphic standing in the fairway, a shot tracker type ball flight to the green with the pin in the back right, the actual shot tracker path landing either back left or short right of the green, on the green (so back left is approx pin high but left, short right is approx in line with the hole but short), with a scatter plot of the distribution of landing spots centered to maximize GIR, not shifted up so it's centered just a tad short and left of the hole like too many of us do in practice.  The green shape and scatter plot distribution should be done in a way to make it obvious that if you shift the center of the points even halfway from green center to the flag you will hit WAY less GIR.  And the actual landing spot shown from the shot tracker path should be one of the shots that would be off the green if the aim point were shifted towards the flag.  Maybe you could have it be so it'd be in a bunker or something without center of the green aim.

That seems like a lot to fit in a little space. :-) Our two leading ideas (including the one we submitted to be designed) are comparatively simple. It sounds like a cool cover though. :-)

The analytic approach that you guys take to golf makes me think it should look something like a math textbook cover. I whipped this up real quick using images from this site, not sure if they belong to you guys or not!

Also oops on Erik's last name haha.
