Maybe someone can help me here. Does the USGA intentionally try to have fun with the pairings?

They have Kevin Stadler, De Jonge, and Shane Lowry all in the same group. (All plus size fellas)

They have youngins playing together, and old timers playing together too, I have to think it's intentional.

yes, they do.  apparently a tradition of some sort.  some whining about it this year, though

That's a mighty small drop zone Dustin Johnson played out of. I hope they don't use that every day, especially if other golfers are going to blast it like DJ just did.

Anyone who's bet on Mr Watson for this tournament must be getting a tad anxious. I didn't expect this course to suit his game, but he's started as if even he thinks he can't win.

Usually when you come out pessimistic about a golf course, the golf course will get you back. I think Watson should just play his game and stay aggressive instead of trying to hit irons off the tee. DJ's hitting woods off the tee and it's suiting him well so far.

Ok, the US Open (watching Thurs/Fri on ESPN) is officially ruined.

Chris Berman.

He's the worst.  Knows nothing about golf or the players. Enough said.

The ultimate "old man" setup:

Ping G30 driver
Ping G Fairway woods - 5 and 7 woods
Callaway X-Hot #5 hybrid; Old school secret weapon
Ping G #6-9 irons; W and U wedges
Vokey 54 and 58* Wedges

Thanks, guys.

Edit: I don't get the connection between Phil and Rose though...apart from being the reigning Open and US Open champs. Is that it?

More or less. Also Fitzpatrick, the reigning US Amateur champion, is playing with them. The USGA doesn't have stock pairings as other majors do, but that combination of champions isn't uncommon.

Newbie here. I have played it when it was wall to wall grass and it was beautiful and tough. I think the redesign looks spectacular. But I also believe it makes it much easier for the top players in the world. Really borderline deserving  of a US Open. Especially if they still want to protect their deserved reputation of the "toughest Major in golf". Their is no way these native areas compare to 6 inch US open rough. Will this be like the pheonix open where they are allowed to be jerks on # 16 but it is frond upon anywhere else. Will Pinehurst be the only US Open venue aloud to have a easier setup? Oh well change is inevitable I guess.

Don't want to get put in the fat grouping? Here's a suggestion - don't be fat. Speaking of fat, did Jason Dufner gain more weight? Dude is carrying quite the belly...

Good segment by Jimmy Roberts on David Gossett just now (NBC). Very interesting how his swing deteriorated after a swing change, when his budding career looked so promising. He's back in the US Open this year after years in the wilderness. Good overview here: http://espn.go.com/golf/usopen14/story/_/id/11038133/david-gossett-seeks-career-revival-us-open-golf

His coach is same as Payne Stewart's. Caddie same as Johnny Miller's.  At any rate, David seems like a great guy with an amazingly positive attitude. I'll cheer him on.

Um... I don't think thats how that works. There shouldn't be a "fat" group in the first place.

Ooh, Casey. I have £10 on you at 110-1. You go, Paul.

The more I practise, the luckier I hope to get.

Phil made a great decision by using the claw grip this week. I didn't see him blow the ball past hole not one time today. If he missed, they were tap ins.

Phil's driving was also great. He might just win this thing!
