  1. 1. Would you rather see…

    • Each match contested for a single point (match play)?
      1
    • Each match contested as a Nassau, with points available for the front, back, and total (all match play)?
      6

Is there a Newport Cup Cup? If not I would be glad to sponsor it. If so, I would be glad to sponsor some small prices. You understand this is all to bribe myself into the rest of the world team.

We aren't really currently planning on having a "Rest of the World" team. It's largely "east coast versus west coast." Perhaps six-on-six or something. If you played you'd be on one of those teams.

You could create a six-person team. Though that's 18, and a weird number, so…?

I have a cup. Looks like the British Open cup. You can see it in Newport Cup articles from 2005/2006, etc.

Don't think I will be able to organize a team of six. But I would love to play in one of the teams for sure. So if there is a Cup, I will sponsor some small prizes, depending on the format you decide.

Not a lot of brainstorming going on here.... We could make a par 3's birdie pool. Only par 3's makes it competitive for everyone. Not only for longhitters who are used to reaching par 5's in 2.

My recommendation is to do it in June or July before I move back east. :-)

All depends on my financial situation, which could change a whole heck of a lot in a year and a half. But I'll do what I can to try to be there.

Since my job starts soon and I'll have accrued vacation days and money by that this time next year, I should be able to make it.

Though I doubt I'm going to be part of the outing, just as an off chance I will say I will have my vacation available anytime after January 16.

I'd be interested in being a part of this if there is room for me! If there isn't room for me to play, I'd even come just to watch, help out, and meet everyone.

What course(s) do you have in mind?

@Ernest Jones, @David in FL, @JetFan1983, and @jamo would all be good choices for the "East" team if they can make it. (EJ counts even though he's in Canada, right?)

Obviously the "west" team will be easier to assemble since it's in our neck of the woods.

Sorry guys, somehow my email notifications got turned off and I didn't see this till just now. Sounds like a ton of fun but also insanely expensive with airfare, hotels and time off work. I'll keep it in mind though and see how things play out between now and then. Probably going to go through a career change prior to that so that will have a lot of impact on my ability to do this. You should totally try to enlist some guys to run around filming the whole thing and then edit it together with some graphics and stuff. That would be the cat's ass.

Yuuup...I'd be down for that. I actually have a friend who has a small production business (mostly high-end weddings, company training videos, etc) and wants some "sports stuff" for his portfolio. Might try and convince him to "volunteer" a few hours, and then he can use that for his portfolio. Just an idea anyway.

I would be interested.  What about a Ryder Cup type of format with different types of games each day?  Also, could one of the days be a 36 hole day?

That's the idea, yes. We may not do the alternate shot (it's kind of okay if you're both pros, but there's no quicker way to learn to despise someone than having them leave you in some awful spots, plus you only play half the shots), but something like that.

I don't know about the 36-hole days. We'll see. They can be tough to schedule.

Been thinking about this today, so I came up with what I think are a few good possibilities.  In no particular order:

  • Ryder Cup style sounds fun as heck, but I agree that we should skip the alternate shot round.  I'm thinking two rounds of four-ball (different teammates and opponents each round for variety) and one round of singles.  We pay full price for 18, might as well play all 18.
  • 36 holes in one day is a lot, but it also saves guys a night in a hotel and/or a night away from their families.  Which brings me to my next (and frankly IMO, most brilliant) idea:
  • Those of us with the room should consider hosting one of the east coasters for the weekend.  This will allow us to get to know each better, as well as save people some big money, which we all know is the main obstacle to people being able to attend these types of things.
  • And as much as I'd like for it to be East vs. West, realistically the 'home' team will have a much easier time getting players, so if we wanted to 8 v. 8 (for example) there is always the possibility that we'll only get 6 committed to travel but we'll have 10 locals willing to play.  In that case, we can just consider just letting Erik and Mike be captains and choose their teams playground style.

Anywho's, I have other ideas that I forgot at the moment, and my son is bugging me to play some silly board game ;), so this is what I have for mow. :)

I like the ideas (especially the one about not having to pay for a hotel :-D), but I wouldn't mind 36 holes in a day. Interested in what everyone else thinks.

I can see the 36 holes in one day being fun too.  Tiring, but fun.

BTW, I was thinking that unless we're getting some crazy deal at Mike's club or something, that it'd be fun to play 3 different courses.

So, the itinerary could look something like:

Friday:

East coasters arrive and hang out with their host families for the evening.

Saturday:

7am:  Round 1 of four-ball

12pm-1pm:  group lunch

2pm:  Round 2 of four-ball

Sunday:

7am:  Singles

12pm:  lunch and awards, start plans for rematch in 2016.  No anchored putters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Day 234 (23 Dec 24) - Mystery Monday - what to do today….pretty straight up as I spent time with the 58 and a series of pitches (lower flighted all the way up to high fliers over the tulip tree).  Wrapped up the day going lower ball with the 9i and easy bump and runs.  Again as always the setup was key - case in point, got lazy and casually set up, feet straight and promptly hit a couple of nice heely shots hard right.  Knew it immediately, as next couple I went through the routine and flew the balls promptly too the target point.  Setup - setup - setup…
