Grant is an interesting choice. I know he works with Joseph Mayo in teaching; does Mayo come with Waite? Would be an interesting bit of work to see those guys work with Tiger.

As Mike said, they've basically gone their separate ways, with each having a group of regular PGA Tour players.

I've been seeing and hearing some chatter about Chuck Cook, too. What is he like, in terms of instructor quality?

I'll just say: "He's coached a lot of PGA Tour players."

Well, if Grant worked with Tiger, and Mayo came as part of the package, I bet that Tiger would beat Joe with his 9i to shut him up.

:-$

But they split up some time ago.

He only said it once, there's no harm in that.  If he says it three times, though ... I think that's when we have to worry. ;)

I'd like to see him pick somebody not on the media radar. GW sounds like a good choice, but it would be more interesting to see the whole golf world react, who? I don't have anyone in mind, it's just to antagonize the preconception that anyone good is in the media radar. The press though they all act all like they're experts, is just that. For the most part, an act.

Erik, might be off topic, but could you explain the difference of being a (good) coach for Joe (the HackerStacker) of the tour pro? I mean, you might well be a greaat coach for the weekend golfer, but not for the pro. Do you need extra/other qualifications? In technical terms? Would there be a difference between a tour coach or a non tour coach.

If I may throw in my two cents, a good teacher is a good teacher, but someone who teaches pros and the like, I would guess that the psychologist part is much more for the pros.

I think the coaching is unnecessary. If he can't play by now, he never will. How many coaches does Bubba have? How many coaches did Sam have when he fashioned clubs from tree limbs anf developed his swing from there?

The game has moved on from the times of Sam Snead.

Bubba has coaches. Heck, one of them is the topic of the top story on the blog: http://thesandtrap.com/b/throwing_darts/talking_to_bubba_watsons_coach_andrew_fischer_of_fishfit .

Also while they may not have had "coaches", players would regularly ask other players to watch their swings and give advice.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
