Of course. Just as with any illegal piece of equipment....and it doesn't matter whether he's winning or not.

I could care less what my golfing buddy needs, and/or uses to beat me. If anything, I may try to play with a little more mental focus.

The only thing I might do, is ask "my buddy" to let me borrow it to see what the deal was with it. I'd then hand it back to him/her, and play on from there.

Since this question is in the "Rules of Golf" section, should I assume it's not approved for sanctioned play? If it's not, then my golfing buddy is not beating me to my way of thinking..

Probably not in a casual round. Even if we were playing for a small amount of $$$, I would probably let it slide. I've had buddies who will pull out their "orange whip" mid round and swing while we are waiting on the tee box, I've had buddies carry 17 clubs in their bag, guys who change their ball out once they reach the green, etc. etc.

As long as there is no field to protect, I don't think any of that stuff gives someone enough of an advantage that I'll call them on it in a casual round.

Question for all. If your buddy was beating you and using a BanditGrip would you call them out on it and ask that they put it away?

no - i don't care at all how someone else plays.  I don't care who is winning or losing, I play against myself.

As long as he isn't playing super slow (pissing around with it or taking a billion practice swings each shot with the Orange Whip or something) or being objectionable or anti-fun, I really don't care at all.

for that matter, is this just a stealth advertising thread?  I see your name is the same.  that can be annoying when people do that.

My question - is a bloody mary considered an illegal playing aid?

Color me skeptical, but I feel like there is a "twist" coming later in this thread. Perhaps the BanditGrip is legal for use in competition and the OP is looking for a clever way to highlight that fact?

In a casual round, all I would do is make sure that the is aware that what he is doing is against the rules. That is just to ensure that he doesn't get stung by it sometime when he has a wager with someone, or worse, gets caught using it in a competition.  If he is silly enough to start bragging about a score he shot when using illegal equipment, then I'll let him know where I stand on that issue.

By the way, there is no way that thing is legal for anything but practice.

If they were playing in a tournament or we were playing for money, yes.  If not, then no.   You might want to add a poll to this so you can tally the results more easily.

As long as he/she isn't using the round for handicap, I have no problem with them using it. As far as beating me, shoot, I'll just step up my game. lol  It's been said previously, don't slow me down.

"My question - is a bloody mary considered an illegal playing aid?"

No it is not. Every where I play, I am enticed by the beverage cart person to use one, most times more,  to better my game, for that day. If you want to play better, consistently, it is rumored to also use 1/2 spoon full Tequila in the make up. (size of spoon is a personal thing)  If available, might I suggest Casa NobleTequila Crystal . I'd also double up on the Tobasco too.

Just as an addition - apparently Bandit Golf has several illegal items for sale.  That seems to be their business model.  With a company name like "Bandit", it seems logical that they would be on the wrong side of the rules.

If you're playing me, go ahead and have 3 or 4 on the front 9.... if that helps your game then I'm a bit worried about you.    I have some Bahamian goat pepper sauce that has about 10 times the kick of Tabasco. ;-)

(By the way, it's Tabasco :smartass: )

Interesting mix of excellence and beginner in this post -

Tequila - advanced move.  Will do and I have just the spoon for the mix.

Tobasco - beginner move - If you desire more flavor with the heat you want to use Sriracha

He is going to need more than a gimmick grip aid to beat me!  ;)

Poll added. Yes vote added (mine) too. :)

BanditGrip is here as a sponsor to sell a training aid. Mike and I are being sent a few to evaluate.

FWIW, if it's a casual round, I'm pointing out to my buddy that he can't do that in any real competition. If we're playing against each other, it's straight Rules of Golf.

Is it illegal to use a marker on your glove to draw lines across the fingers to remember where to grip the club? Does that make a normal glove an illegal aid item?

No. Perfectly legal.

Interesting that the video on the website wrongly implies it can be used for all play including handicap or tournament rounds.

    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
