I can't get a definitive answer from TSA other than their typical "form letter" response. Question: Can I pass through TSA with my golf laser range finder in my briefcase? Such a simple question but they can't seem to answer it. I'd hate to get turned away at TSA and or have my range finder taken away. What's a golfer to do? What's been your experience when traveling with a laser range finder?

It's in my golf bag, which is checked baggage, so I don't know.

It seems like something you should be able to take on the plane with you if you want, though. They let cell phones and computers come along, after all.

I shipped two with my golf clubs, since I was brining one to a friend.. No issues.. I see nonissue with it in a brief case either.. It's just like a camera or any other electronic equipment. Why would it be any different?

As mentioned, If I'm travelling with clubs, that stuff would go in the bag. But not right out in an easy spot to be taken if there are any nefarious handlers. Hidden pocket, deep in the ball pocket, etc... But if you take it on board in a carry-on, why not have the manual with it. IT's always possible you will get a random search if they don't recognize it on the xray. When they examine it, have the manual wrapped around it to clearly show what it is, rather trying to fuddle through an explanation to some guy who wouldn't know a rangefinder from a Pathfinder pickup truck. But yeah, getting a "form letter" response is a bit disappointing from such an agency.

The potential issue would be that it is a "frikkin' laser"

I have flown from Vegas to DFW 4 times with my lazer range finder in my carry on. It's been searched every time, with no issues. They did turn it on, and  look through it. They seem to be more concerned with my lap top. I keep the laser in my carry on because I don't trust baggage handlers.

I know a guy who before he departed took an electronic device to the air port, and asked the TSA folks about it. I don't remember what the device was, but they had no issue with it. Maybe that's something you might want to consider.

Only a problem if you also try to bring the Sharks though.

Thanks all! My golf bag is always thoroughly searched in that my clubs are always put back in my bag incorrectly. I can't help but think that a range finder would be too much of a temptation for those looking to swipe electronics. As for wrapping it in the instructional manual well, that pamphlet is no longer in my possession. So some indicated "no problem". Can I ask what airports are you checking into? I fly often and am registered TSA-Pre. TSA processes do vary a bit from airport to airport so I'd hate to get screwed over.

I put mine laser rangefinder and my Skycaddie in my carryon bag that also contains my laptop.  I have asked them before if they wanted me to take ALL electronic devices out and the answer has always been "no, only the laptop".  Never had any issues at all and I fly multiple times each year with my clubs and golf electronics.

I've never flown in USA, but never had an issue here in Europe. I like to keep expensive electronics in my carry-on, so I bring it in the cabin.

I don't see why it should be a problem, but if they ask, maybe you should call it a range finder, not a laser. Say it's a binocular that tells you the distance.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
