CMP Challenge #002 - Hit a 6-Iron Cross Handed

This is Communal Mirth Project Challenge #002:

You have three attempts to attempt to hit a shot with a 6-iron CROSS HANDED from a fairway lie or the best approximation (a mat is fine). NO TEES.

Tips:

  • Your left shoulder will have to be quite low.
  • Your right elbow will have to bury itself into your side because you still want to get the handle forward.
  • If you fear for the health of your wrists (I didn't, as I swung nearly full speed), swing slowly.
  • You'll probably top a few.

Rules:

  • Film yourself trying this the first THREE times. No practicing the shot (practice swings are okay, no ball). :) Scout's honor.
  • Post the YouTube video to this thread when you're done.
  • Mirth ensues.

Try as I might, I couldn't get my left shoulder to be lower than it normally would…

They said in this video above that .01% of players use a cross-handed grip. Curious if you guys felt the "power" that Steve Flesch says that Will gets. I can't imagine that swing feeling powerful!

No, it felt awkward. I couldn't even grip comfortably. I doubt it would be more powerful than my regular swing even if I did manage a clean strike.

What's hilarious about this is Erik has more keys in cross handed swing then I do with my normal swing. :banana:

Can't wait to get down the range in a few days to try this out. Clearly it's difficult but for some reason my confidence is out-weighing my skill (he says sitting at home on a keyboard) ;)

I just want to put it out there: this is a lot harder than it looks. Also, I did it in the middle of my range session and just the three swings totally screwed up my swing when I switched back. I had to go back to soft wedge shots to get my groove back.

I just want to put it out there: this is a lot harder than it looks.

I'm pretty cocky about being able to do just about any kind of athletic stuff ... but yes, this is 100% true.  Holy crap, was this hard.  (I took my video the other day but haven't had a chance to upload it.)  It's not a pretty sight.

Harder than the lefty swing? I've gotten fairly good at lefty swings and don't hesitate to use them on course if I'm stymied by a tree or something.

Harder than the lefty swing? I've gotten fairly good at lefty swings and don't hesitate to use them on course if I'm stymied by a tree or something.

For me ... way, way harder. Left feels a little bit goofy, but I can still do it pretty well.

But based on my two cross handed swings, I'm not sure I'd be able to break 180.

@iacas, you went with a ten finger cross handed grip?


Interlocking. Just like my regular grip. Realistically, you could double overlap and that may be the best since it gets your hands closest to their normal orientation.
