I've seen plenty of shanks (mine included), drives of of houses and even over a house (luckily none that I remember broke anything.)

But the worst one I ever saw was when I finally turned 18 and the golf course allowed us to play in the morning tee times , until waiting until after 11 am on the weekends.  My local muni course also had a first come first serve tee time for the weekends.  Whoever was there earliest got the first tee time.

So one day me and two friends decide we're going to get the first tee time, get there around 5 am and we were there first and I was pumped we scored the first tee time.  Get to the first tee and you can hear all of the old guys complaining that us youngsters got the first time and my buddy who is a lefty strolls to the first tee.

Takes his set up and hits the ball directly between his legs and off one of the old codgers bags. I thought I was going to piss myself before I had a chance to swing.  So me and my other buddy tee off and hit em very well, the other friend re-tees and hits it about 50 yards, that was the longest first hole I think i ever played.  Luckily, once we got going, we toasted all the old farts, but that first tee shot was priceless.

A friend of mine who was a pretty poor golfer used to smoke expensive cigars on the golf course. One day he was teeing off and threw his cigar on the ground about a foot away from his tee-ball. He took a mighty swing and missed the ball but hit the stogie dead square. It exploded and I swear for a moment it looked like a ticker tape parade. The other two guys and myself all doubled over in laughter. To this day I can't figure out how he could miss the ball by that far. All he said was, "crap, I had about $10 worth of cigar left'.

Other than mine, I've only seen one really bad shot and it was recently.

We hear an expletive followed by the sound of a ball hitting a tree branch followed by the sound of a ball hitting the side of a building followed by a shout/scream from the ladies room. . .

Nobody was hurt, and the golfer put his second shot right in the middle of the fairway from the "rough" situation. :-D

Setting the scene: Dog-left.  I'm setting up right next to the tee marker on the right side.  I proceed hit it off the toe and it hits the marker and proceeds to come back and hit me in the left leg about 5 inches above my knee.

Very painful...and embarrassing.

Mark

I think you'll have to go a long way to top this one....

I was in the woods to the right of the fairway. I have a shot out... really I do. Well, it's an opening about 4 yds wide, but it's about 30 feet in front of me. Risky but the prize. My other choice was to take an unplayable with stroke and distance. I played the ball one ball back from center trying to keep it low, and played my 5 iron. I choked up on the club, took a half-swing and came down hard. Hey, the green was within reach, right? The ball hit the tree on the right, ricocheted back, hit another tree, then hit another tree, then hit another tree, then hit another tree, then hit me in the back, then landed in the blackberry bush to my right further into the woods. Like a pinball machine.

Now I'm hitting 5 (penalty for being hit with my own ball) on a par 4, no way to chip out. Stroke and distance = hitting 7 from the last spot. Not doing this again. I tossed the ball onto the fairway, and took my X8.

By far the worst shot I ever saw was a putt. It wasn't me, thank god. He was a pretty good golfer. He was around 6 inches away from the hole - possibly closer, just going to tap in. He hit the ball about 2 inches. He didn't whiff on the ball or anything like that. Somehow he completely decelerated on the putt and didn't even get the 6 inch putt to the hole.

Fortunately, he wasn't taking it too seriously, because I just started cracking up. He could have been really mad at me if he were taking it seriously. I then proceeded to needle him on short putts the rest of the round. I honestly probably didn't stop laughing until 2 holes later.

I was on the patio adjacent to the first tee of the 'Old White' course at The Greenbriar in the early 1980's, just drinking and watching folks tee off.  Since we were all there for an industry association meeting , most of the observers knew most of the golfers -- ratcheting up the pressure a bit for the golfers.  One guy really hammered his tee shot -- right off the toe, at 90 degrees, into the (sheet metal) side of the building on the other side of the tee box.  Loudest bang I ever heard, and this guy was dying.  He declined to re-tee, and jumped in his cart hoping to make a quick getaway.  But his buddies made him sit there and endure the abuse from the crowd on the patio for what seemed like ages...

The worst shot two shots I've seen were by me.

1) First time out after a long winter two years ago, setting up on the teebox while taking a lesson to tee off from the back tees. I swing and hit it so far off the heel that it goes between my legs. Ball bounces up off a rock and hits a window on a house that was nearly directly behind me. It didn't break it, but the owner came out and started laughing when he saw where I hit it from.

2) Same lesson, but hitting a 3-wood into a par 5. I top it so badly it embeds itself into the ground before bouncing backwards. The ball ends up about 3 feet behind where it started...

I've also seen someone chili-dip a chip so bad they triple hit it. It was pretty funny to watch, because the guy had to laugh at himself afterwords.

Not sure I've seem a triple chip, I've had and seen double chips.

140 yd downhill par 3. Baby pitching wedge. My playing partner proceeds to shank it over 120 yds right into the woods, while having slice spin so it ended up going backwards as well. To his credit, he reteed and managed to make bogey

Was playing in a club tournament. Made birdie on the first hole and feeling really good. Nothing more than bragging rights on the line. On the tee box with driver on the par 5 second hole, swing outta my shoes and manage to stick the driver in the ground about 6 inches behind the ball and completely miss it while the other 3 guys stood amazed behind me.

No doubt the golf gods were trying to teach you humility for hitting that first hole so good.

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

I've seen so many, where to start? My buddy years ago teed up with his driver and the ball went off the extreme toe 90 degrees, and hit his sister. Thankfully, she wasn't hurt.

was on the 18th tee box at The Woodlands Resort Panther Trail....i snap hooked a ball half left into a brick house 50-60 yds away...the ball hit the house a sailed right back at me and I caught in my left hand...tee'd it back up and hit 3...

My mother in law in the fairway with an iron, completely missed the ball & did a full-body 360 & almost fell. Possibly the funniest thing I've ever seen.

A shot that comes to mind for me was when I was paired up with some hacker who was even worse than ME! It was a normal dribbling topped ball that I've done plenty of times, but what made it seem worse was what the guy yelled to me before he hit the shot:

"I just read Tiger's book. He said that he's hit the driver from the fairway a few times. I figure, why not try it?"

    • It’s not live on free to air tv in the UK, and hasn’t been since 1995. ( I pay a subscription to Sky for generally good golf coverage). There are limited highlights on the BBC for some golf events, but that’s it. Are other/all PGA events on NBC?  Allowing ticket scalping is a systemic failure across sports and showbiz, which could be legislated against, but in the UK is not in any meaningful way. I don’t know much about the secondary market in the US or anti scalping measures.  Charging more to keep prices down is an interesting concept, in practice no doubt you are right even if It sounds a bit Catch 22  Do you think sports tickets and broadcast rights  should be sold on a purely capitalist basis, or is there an argument to say that some sports might benefit more from wider exposure and affordable access. ( golf in the US is apparently not one of these if tickets sold out at those prices so quickly)  Fans might benefit from cheaper tickets and in the UK at least, TV coverage that reaches a wider audience.
