Joe Buck acknowledges the inevitability of him referring to Cole Hammer as Cole Hamels. Sounds like a good drinking game for those watching at home.

Pretty much.  Sat down and starting crying after the tee shot.  I don't think it was because of the result.  I just think he's a bit overwhelmed.  As he should be.  He's 15.

Almost birdied his first hole!

It is a bit strange to see so many sprinkler heads that close to the pin. I think it's just because you can't tell the difference between off the green and on the green.

Yeah, Tiger was talking about how easy it is to hit a sprinkler head.

Scoring pretty good so far. I kind of thought this....USGA watered the heck out of these greens and they seem pretty receptive early on. That coupled with the wide fairways are resulting in some early birdies. They have the power to make it tougher and bring the scores back down, though. Like I predicted early this morning, I think you'll see some scores get to 5 or 6-under these first couple days before they start going the other way.

Kevin Na in the deep stuff off the 12th tee - his setup and preshot routine look normal (disclaimer, he did play right after yippy dippy Keegan Bradley)

This is an unfamiliar set up as well as a new course for the USGA, so I suspect they decided to be cautious on Thursday.  With the forecast, they can toughen the layout up if they want, but I think they were worried more about going too far the other way.

With Kevin Na, how could anyone tell the difference?

They have black flies there too? Angel looked like he was being aggravated by something?

Exactly. The weather being overcast is really good, too, for the late guys. It will keep the greens from burning out and should keep the scores pretty good all day, assuming the sun doesn't come out.

16 golfers are under par at this early stage; 9 of them are among the top 20 in the world rankings. Fox must surely hope the leaderboard stays that way.

The guys on the internet feed for the featured group are decent.

Mark Brooks keeps calling the other guy out making him sound like a real idiot.

David Duval said last night he thinks the winner and the leaderboard will be stacked with the top players. He said this course really requires a lot of skill and strategy and you will see that from the best players and players who have the experience. I disagreed just because a lot of the top players weren't coming in top form, but I hope I'm wrong and Duval's right.

Just loving the fact it's a links course for a US Open!

On a side note, anyone else having problems with the "Featured Group" Live Feed on the USGA website? Plays for a minute then goes down..

Stream is rock solid here across the pond. There's a lot of really awkward high-fiving in all the USGA promos though.

Curt Menefee is no Bob Costas: no gravitas as an anchor, and he's seriously rushing through the copy. NOTE: Not because he's black! Mike Tirico's done very well in this role at ESPN for many years. I actually think a non-screaming Gus Johnson would have been a better fit in that chair.

    • Day 457 - 2025-12-31 Stayed after some GEARS Hybrid stuff with my senior girls and got some work in. Also, kicked Tegan's butt at a chipping contest with a wedge that has a lousy toe profile.
    • Day 141 12-31 Reconnecting arm and club face work. Making sure left wrist is arched only on the downswing. Not doing full swings, im pausing at the top and will do a few rehearsals.  Hit a few real balls  after, and had some curve way left.
    • That was a good watch. When I started working on pelvis in the backswing. I thought, this sounds contradictory to those leg straightening threads on the site. Erik has already done a correction. Then the last lesson we went more down the route of feeling the right knee gains flex. It doesn’t, but the feeling keeps my knee position in a good range. Also, I just realized how much extra work my right hip needed to do to stabilize the body with the proper weight shift. Those glute and hip stabilizers got worked. 🤣 I wish this evolution in the golf instruction happened 20 years ago! 😭
    • I've been Playing Golf for: 40 yrs My current handicap index or average score is: 4.0 factor My typical ball flight is: Straight however sometimes slight draw. The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: squirt to the right due to to much arm not enough turn.
