  1. 1. What category/class of ball do you prefer to use ...

    • Tour ball (~ $40/doz)
      16
    • 3 piece ball (~$30-35/doz)
      8
    • 2 piece ball (~ $20-25/doz)
      6
    • Budget 2 piece ball (~$10-15./doz)
      3
    • NO particular preference ... whatever I get a deal on or dig out of the woods/pond

I'm trying to get a sense of what type of ball we all use.    I realize you can get PRoV1's refurb for what new 2 piece balls cost ... poll isn't perfect, I've only included the price/dozen to give people a feel for what ball category they chose to use - for the sake of the poll, its intended to reference the CLASS of ball you prefer (regardless if you buy them new or used/refurbished for much cheaper).

I use the Nike RZN Black, prior to that was the Nike 20Xi Black, I switch sometimes to the platinum but I prefer the black the best and have the best numbers on the monitor with it vs any of the other balls and finally its a Nike, so for me if all other factors are equal the Nike wins for me.

I use a ProV1x or its equivalent. Spin into greens helps me. I don't like to play for runout, generally.

Last time I played, I played an NXT Tour because I was rusty. But after another round or two (hopefully), it's back on the urethane ball train. The e5s are good. Might finish out the box of those first as a transition.

I can score 120 with a cheap ball just as well as with a tour ball. Maybe later it will actually matter for me. Right now not so much.

I only drive about 180, but I make up for by not hitting my wedges well.

I've really liked the Bridgestone B330. I'll also play Pro-V1x as well.

Isn't the Penta a couple years old and off the market now? At least at the major retailers. Don't get me wrong, I gamed various found Penta and the TP LDP that I had laying around in my last round last year and enjoyed them, but didn't think they could still be gotten

I'm a cheap 2 piece guy ... whenever I use spinny tour balls, it affects my drives - seem to really notice more hooking off the tee.   It goes from a controllable draw to a hook.  This outweighs the need for spin around the greens for me.   I honestly can't tell any difference around the green between a Top Flite D2, Nike PD or Noodle compared to a better 2 piece like a Q Star / Gamer / Supersoft / DT Solo, etc for twice the price, so I typically just use distance balls.   Always in yellow or orange for visibility.

Minor nit - the Gamer is a 3-piece ball.  And I haven't found it excessively spinny.  I have bought but not yet tried the Tour version of the Gamer which has a urethane cover and is supposed to spin more.  We'll see, a)if it does, and b) if that turns out to be a good thing for me.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I bought 2 dozen top-flite gamers last year for 20-25 for two dozen. I really like them a lot for the price, I also snagged a dozen top-flite xl 7000s for $5, i can definatly tell theh 7000s are harder

Typically I'll play the NXT Tour. However, I do stock up on tour balls if I find a good deal (e.g. Picked up 5 boxes of the Callaway HEX Black when they were on close-out for $30 a dozen), or get them as a gift.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
