I can't help but wonder if the idea of taking a divot is so commonly taught because it is easier than developing an effective swing that just brushes the ground.

Of course, I'm new to this, and am likely full of hooey.

Back in the day I used to be able to make ball then turf contact. It's such a wonderful thing when you can manage it! The ball takes off like a rocket!Then life intervened, I didn't play much golf, and the ability floated away from me.  I realized that the pros, and better amateurs, live right on the edge of blading, chunking, or cold topping their irons.

You better have your stuff wired pretty tight to live there!

I use to be a picker.   As I've improved, I've learned to take a small divot after the ball.

Digger, lot of divot with wedges and short/mid irons. Normal with long irons and hybrid. From the tee no divot.
