ARRRRHGGGGGGGHHHG!!!!! This is frustrating! In the last month I've developed a real shank problem BUT it's only happening with my wedges!?!??? Every other club is fine (relative of course to all the other swing faults I have!:) but as soon as I pull out my 48, 54 or 60 wedge my game just goes completely to crap!!! Are there any good drills to help fix this because it's just killing me!!! Thanks Mailman

Try 1/2 and 3/4 swings to start.  Get back to making good contact.  You could just be setting up closer than you realize.  Also, to fix issues, do as the thread below suggests.

YouTube also has a bunch of moron golf instructors who do not know their ass from a tea kettle. You may as well say good luck and say nothing as send him to YouTube. You shank because the sweet spot is outside the ball.

This - you're hitting it on the hosel. The reason it'll be happening with your wedges is because the swing allows you a bit less time to correct any faults or you're standing too close. Set up a bit further away and try to hit it out of the toe with quarter swings. Alternatively, put a ball down where you normally would and set up to it, then another one an inch further past that (so you would expect your swing to miss it). See what happens - I bet you catch it. You'll sort it quickly, honest :-)

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

I had this happen to me too for a while. My problem was a stance that was much too open, promoting a takeaway around me (too far inside, behind me), resulting in the hosel of the club being the first thing visible to the ball when getting back around and through.  The fix is to not open the stance so much and to make sure the takeaway starts down the line and not around your back, even for a short 1/4 or 1/2 swing.

1/2 shots, then 3/4 Put 60% of your body weight on the leg closest to the hole Don't try and cut the ball, keep the wedge on the target line Repeat each day with 30 solid contacts. Call me in the morning

Turn your hat around backwards.

Put all of your change in your right pocket.

Stick a tee behind your left ear.

Now hit the ball down the fairway.

(Note: passing out on tequila later in the evening is completely optional, and not necessarily condoned by others)

I was doing that last year on my less than full swings with my wedges. I went a saw an instructor who said I was cocking my wrists too early and trying to hit the ball too aggressively. The shanked shots went away once I started to swing less aggressively.

Go see an instructor because it sounds like there could be a number of reasons for it.

It's in your head. So much so, you're posting on the internet about it. Keeping it in the forefront of your consciousness is your problem. Think about it. Your consistently doing the same thing, over and over.. a fraction off from something completely different. Get some info around causes and then... Let go.

Hard to be sure exactly (million different swings out there) but when I start having problems it's usually because I'm standing too close to the ball, as others have suggested.  What works for me is to take a step back, lay the club out behind the ball with one hand, sometimes just a finger or two, and see where the grip falls naturally.  I then like to take a lot of really slow swings, making sure I'm not getting off line too far on my back swing and really focusing on the impact point.  You'll work through it (just in time for another problem to come up, if my experience tells me anything).

I agree with others. Hit some 1/2 shots, and work your way up from there.

You might be right, but one of the videos was Leadbetter. In addition, you just never know where you might be able to find something that will work for you regardless of the tea kettle.

I had the problem and finally figured out why I was doing it. This might not apply to you, though.

When I took the club back for a short shot, I noticed that the club moved out away from me, as it went back and to the right, by just an inch or so. The club stayed in that plane and on the downswing, and hello, shank.

I cured it by making very sure I took the club straight back, not letting it go out and back.

I really shouldn't say, cured. Sometimes I get sloppy and I pop another one off to the right.

The only way to cure this is to do some slo-mo swings and see where it is that the club is getting off track.

Thank you everyone who replied to my cry fir help! :) In fact pretty much everything you all mention I was doing! I did go see my pro and he had me take a few swings and immediately saw all the issues! He mentioned that pretty much everything was from my head because I was so nervous with chipping which was then feeding in to my posture, set up, swing path And so on! However after 5 minutes my shanks had been cured! It was such a relief to finally start getting shots going straight ahead instead of directly to the right!!! After the session with my pro I spent another hour pitching and chipping without any dramas what so ever. Then at lunch time today I popped down to my club had spent another hour on our short game area and took this photo after using my 54 degree wedge! The difference is like night and day and is such a relief! The things I changed was my posture (not slumped over the ball), wider back swing, not swinging with the arms (flipping) and a better follow through. Honestly it's the closest thing to a miracle I've ever seen! :) Regards Mailman

If it happens again, just go right back to what you learned.  You know you can do it correctly.

set up with the ball closer to the toe & stand about an inch closer to the ball than your normal setup.   I occasionally get the chipping shanks & this is how I fix it...

    • Starting over - missed posting yesterday and it had been less than 28 days since last off day….today was tempo drill day.  Worked on takeaway and moving smoothly into weight shift.
    • I know it is probably dependent on a lot of factors, but how windy does it have to be out before you need to start guessing on how much it would influence the break of your putt?  When I played at Bandon, it was like 25-30 mph winds. The caddies talked about the wind negating break. The only time I had it visually influence my putt was on hole 18 at Bandon Dunes. My missed my putt on the high side of a pretty severe breaking putt. The slope around the hole was in the 2-3 degree range. As the ball was about to come to a stop, the wind gusted and pushed the ball half a rotation into the cup.  The rest of the week I thought it had no influence at all. I was thinking, is it just over thinking to try to account for the wind?
    • Day 310 - 2025-08-06 Went downtown in the late afternoon and got nearly two hours of work in. Not a ton of breaks. Was blasting the TS at the end, from a HomePod and two TVs. 😄
    • I watched this video of his last night: I don't hate him like @boogielicious apparently does and thought this was a pretty good premise so I gave it a shot.  Not the worst thing in the world and I especially liked the premise.  He's got a lot of air to fill by himself, which he isn't great at, but in doing so, you get some decent insight into how his brain works while setting up shots/putts.
    • So driver is longer than all the other clubs and gear effect plays a bigger part with driver than anything else. If you're hitting it out of the heel it could slice even if you have the face square. Could try some foot spray or impact tape and check that. Other thing is if the shaft is different in how it flexes or how flexible it is it could be affecting your swing somewhat. Driver also has the straightest face, so while with a 4 iron it might fade, with driver that can wind up being a slice with the same face angle at impact.
