I am thinking of putting in an artificial outdoor putting green in a 16x23 space. The width will be 14 or 15 ft. How many holes would you suggest? What can I do to make it interesting. Thanks Sherry

I would think 4 to 5 would give you both long and short putt options.

And I'd say 3 or 4 is plenty. I have a 20' or so long by 6' wide green with 2 holes and if I had the room to make it wider then I'd prolly add a hole in each corner at most.

When I had an artificial green I didn't spend much time putting to different holes. Unless you spend a bunch making it contoured straight, flat putts only do so much for you. It was more having a semi-realistic surface I could use for drills. I usually putted to different distance targets. I placed beanbags at different lengths and would putt to those marks in different patterns. Wasn't really trying to hole a putt just stop it where I wanted it. Had to leave it behind when I moved and consequently I am not putting as well this year. Just haven't put in the time to control distance.

I'd also caution against too many holes. The more holes, the fewer lines of putt available due to other holes being in the way....

I would say stick with 3 golf holes in the corners only. That way you get the long putts on the diagonal.

Pending on slope/contour of the design you intend to have built, placement of the hole locations which give the best variety of 10 ft. putts in a full 360 range of the holes.

Ideally, having putts to practice above/below and from both sides across the slope of a hole location to make practice challenging for speed control when practicing.

You could also have additional holes built in and place covers over holes then rotate the locations.

Add a giant clown face and a windmill :-P

On a serious note im pretty envious. I have often thought of astroturfing the garden but the wife has vetoed it!

Club Rat I suspect it is going to end up being flat because I am actually putting it on a terrace. From what I am hearing I am hearing 3-4 holes will be fine but placed so that they can be approached from different positions.

Russ, I very well could end up with a clown face and a windmill on this thing. It is really for my husband and his friends (I'll take the good wife award now thank you lol) but we have a competitive 9 year old son who will probably use it for target practice!
