Rickie shot 8 under for his final 10 holes at the Players.

Yeah, how soon we forget. I would put that stretch in that circumstance above anything I have ever seen on the course. To say Rory's best is better than that is insane.

The difference is that the stretch by Rickie might come once or maybe twice a year.  A players "A" game should show up 5 or more times a year at least.  I imagine most players on tour have had a stretch like Rickie just as most players have had a round close to Rory.  But Rory has had multiple stretches and multiple rounds that nobody now can come close to.  Also when most players go on those type of runs they are making incredible putts or amazing sand saves.  But Rory looks so in control and like he could do the exact same thing the next day.

I'd say something like that happens once in a career. It was an otherworldly stretch but I agree, I wouldn't consider that Rickie's normal A game, it was beyond that.

These guys are all good, anyone can win any week if they are swinging the clubs well.  The difference now compared to Jack's time and even Tiger's early years is the number of guys that could beat them was limited, where as today we're seeing guys that are just getting on the Tour fighting for #1.

My post was in response to the earlier one about Reed, and who would win if all showed up with their A games. My point is that nobody can play better than Fowler did last Sunday, in that circumstance. As I write this somebody on the Web.com is gunning for a 59. Different circumstance. Of course Fowler's was only over the back 9 and playoff, not the whole round.

Yes, Rory is consistently better than Fowler or anybody else, that is why he is ranked higher.

This coverage is awful. Kostis' swing analysis is so bad and annoying. He said that about a 30 degree angle was greater than 90 in his analysis of Rory's swing. Yeesh. 5 minutes on Nantz's birthday. We don't need two views of Rory's swing. Ugh.

Been on CBS for half an hour, they've shown maybe 15 shots?

I used to quite like McCord, even bought his book.

Now I find him so irritating I can't listen to him at all. All of the fake excitement and "boyish" enthusiasm make him such a jerk.

It's like he has a formula and he refuses to deviate from it for a second.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

At least Faldo got into the modern age with the term, "Smash Factor" :-D

The commentary isn't the worst. I would prefer to just have no commentary but a live feed to listen to them hit shots and maybe catch a few comments from the players. The primary reason I like the Master's online video. Less commentary, more just golf.

Nantz covering golf is a cure for insomnia - flipping channels and I can barely stand how slow the broadcast is - gotta head back to NHL or even MLB Twins-Rays.  Listening to the crowd yelling is becoming more entertaining than these guys - throw Ian Baker Finch in that group of boring broadcasters.......too many superlatives for these golfers.

Everyone talks about Rory's putting, but if Rory's driver is on, how do you beat him on some of these courses that reward length? Just assuming his putter is good enough like it's been, he's going to destroy St. Andrew's if he drives like this. He was a three-footer away from shooting the only 62 in major championship history at the Open in 2010. He'll also destroy the par-5s at Whistling Straits. His tee-to-green play right now is unreal.

I agree, unless there is some serious hazard were his ball will land then he's going with driver. Heck he's flying these bunkers that are suppose to be in play.

Then again, distance is an advantage. He hit 5-wood on that par 4 when Simpson hit 3-wood. Rory will be more accurate than Simpson is hitting the same distance. So even if you bring the course back, and force Rory not to hit driver he is still more accurate because the field gets to hit driver while he hits 3-wood or 5-wood.

Heck Rory could probably hit 3-wood at St. Andrews and be in the top 10 in driving distance. It isn't like these short courses bring the field back to him. Heck he's going to hit shorter irons anyways.

Not everyone that has a good physique uses PED's.

Rory isn't the only guy that could destroy St. Andrews by driving it a long way. It will all depend on the weather and if Rory can keep his hot streak going.

    • It’s winter here and time hitting at my indoor place.  This year I bought and sold a few sets so I didn’t settle in on anything. For this coming season, starting now I have a choice to make.  What set would you guys use? 1.  Nike Vapor Pro irons - They are like new, hit them some last year before I had to demo other sets.  I love them, original grips, barely used so I’m almost not wanting to use them to keep their value up.  Standard LLL and standard grips. 2. Taylormade P7TW irons - Still in the box.  Got them over a year ago but had too much to hit, never used them.  Have used a set in the past and loved them.  Ended up with my own set custom fit to me -1/4”, 1 degree flat midsize grips.  These are probably not as valuable because they are still available and they are fit to me. I hate to put the Nikes away but it makes more sense to save them than the TW’s…. I dunno….
    • Day 215 (3 Dec 24) - Another very chilly day - opted to work on easy pitches in the backyard. Worked thru the irons and wedges - focused on foot position and tempo.
    • Yes. I believe in using the same ball all of the time, including chipping and putting practice. I use the orange Callaway Supersoft.  Only $25 per dozen, and sometimes on sale for $20.
    • A 5400 yd course is not that short for gents driving it 160 yards considering the approach shot lengths they are going to be faced with on Par 4s.  Also, for the course you are referring to I estimate the Par 4s have to average longer than 260 yds, because the Par 5s are 800 yds or so, and if there are four Par 3s averaging 130 the total is 1320 yds.  This leaves 4080 yds remaining for 12 Par 4s.  That is an average of 340 per hole. Anyway, if there are super seniors driving it only 160ish and breaking 80 consistently, they must be elite/exceptional in other aspects of their games.  I play a lot of golf with 65-75 yr old seniors on a 5400 yd course.  They all drive it 180-200 or so, but many are slicers and poor iron players.  None can break 80. I am 66 and drive it 200 yds.  My average score is 76.  On that course my average approach shot on Par 4s is 125 yds.  The ten Par 4s average 313 yds.  By that comparison the 160 yd driver of the ball would have 165 left when attempting GIR on those holes.
