Mid-Atlantic Outing (April 9, 10 2016)

Note: This thread is 2866 days old. We appreciate that you found this thread instead of starting a new one, but if you plan to post here please make sure it's still relevant. If not, please start a new topic. Thank you!

I'll go ahead and commit to both days, as my parents are pretty sure they can slide back a family gathering until later on Sunday. I'll likely have to zip home right after Sunday's round to consume any post-round beverages, but you can add me as confirmed.

Let me know if you need any funds now, and I can call the clubhouse(s) or whatever.

I guess it's time to review my Evolvr lessons and get to work!  The last MidAtlantic outing was April 2014, I started pretty well on the front 9 for me (as I recall), but the wheels came off with lost balls accumulating on nearly every hole on the back. Good times.

Mentioning @atb5079, since I see he chimed in at the end of the last "MidAtlantic outing" thread, asking that we let him know if there's another.

We ARE looking at April 9 and 10, but that may be your catch-up time with the gf after a busy March

Yah, sorry, meant that weekend is when I said I'd spend time with her after not seeing her at all in March because of work.

I'll go ahead and do that.  If I have a single guest pass not used, I'll find someone to invite some other time.  It seems odd these days, outside of TST all of my golf buddies play at the same club as I do.

We live close enough to each other, and I'm always looking for new golf buddies.  Besides, you'll be looking to win back your cash from me after the April outing!

In all seriousness though, I really do want to make 2016 a year for me to get back to playing.  Aside from 3 months in the first half of 2014 I've taken basically 3 years off from golf with only sporadic rounds on vacations.  And having just moved to Maryland, I need to get to know some new courses and golf buddies!  Looking forward to April.

Excellent, Thanks @DaveP043 for doing all the leg work.  Looking forward to meeting everyone.  Reston Town Center is a really nice place, lots of options for hotels and restaurants and bars.

Just FYI, I will have my wife tagging along for the weekend. She will be doing her own thing while we golf but will be out and about with me/us for evening activities on Sat night. So hoping some or all of your significantly better halves will be around too..

Just throwing it out there if anyone wants to score (or salvage) some brownie points..

Yeah, and a really nice place to stay, the Hyatt.  I didn't actually price that one, but like I said in a previous post, the Residence Inn looks like a bargain at under $80, and its not a 3-mile drive to Town Center.

  • iacas changed the title to Mid-Atlantic Outing (April 9, 10 2016)

Kinda geeky, but I am learning Google Earth right now, and created this for fun. Kinda gives you a sense of the topology, even though things in Google Earth look flatter than they feel in real life. I've also found that trees don't look as tall, so GE makes things look like open fields far more than real life:

Dave- that hole #9 tee shot looks interesting, if I've got the tee shot in anywhere near the right vicinity. I probably goofed that up. That's at the 3:16 mark.

And #8 looks like a tough hole!

@RandallT, that's pretty cool.  You're right, Google Earth makes things look a lot flatter, and minimizes the trees.  You're also right on both 8 and 9.  #8 plays downhill, though, and usually downwind, so its probably not as tough as it looks.  On #9, the tee shot will need to be around 200 to 220 yards before turning hard left.  The tough ones that you missed are #2, 80 feet or more uphill from tee to green with a severely contoured green, and #12, again uphill all the way.  We'll have a good time!

Seems like the course is outside the city with not too many houses (I see couple of small clumps) adjacent.

Ah, I see that re: elevation change now. The site I used to create the flyover is provisualizer.com. That link takes you to a profile of Stoneleigh based on the points I plotted (tee, green, and any targets). You might get an error if Google Earth isn't installed, but it does have a cool elevation map I just noticed:

56d44a18b9e75_ScreenShot2016-02-29at8.35

The rise from the 1st green to the 2nd green is definitely impressive! Looks like 5, 6, 7, 8 all go downhill after you go up on #2. Then slowly rise back up to #13, then right back down again. Looks like a fun course. I'll see if I can finish up a flyover of Springfield sometime. I started one, but got sidetracked.

Also at the link (for anyone interested) is the generator for the flyover. Once you map out the points (I use the 2D Planner for that, where you can see range rings (and don't need Google Earth), this link spits out the flyover in a *.kml file that the Google Earth uses. The site does all the "flying" for you, so there's no work on my part other than plotting tees and greens.

Definitely outside the city. I'm west of DC by 15 miles, and I think the course is at least another 15 or 20 miles further west (as crow flies). It'll be nice to get outside the "rat race" circle of DC.

    • New clubs came in this morning and I happened to be working in the area so I picked them up. PING G430 Max 3W (-1.5°) with PING Tour 2.0 Black 75, X-Stiff at -1/2" PING G430 3H with PING Tour 2.0 Chrome 85, X-Stiff Those replace my old fairway wood and hybrid, making all 14 clubs in my bag fitted. I'm going to need new excuses for bad shots 😜
    • Ooh, I don't know about that. I've hit flop shots that are 6-7° down. The more you widen the spin loft the less ball speed you put into the ball.
    • Re: your graphic, ‘ I expected a little more from a varsity letterman.’ Lol…just another one for @boogielicious
    • Can't brag about a 50 last night but it was the best round of my season (4 rounds of 9 holes) so I am not as upset as I could be.  One thing I am noticed is that I got a little more confident in my long hybrids and I attempted a couple longer shots that typically I would just lay up and those holes were a big part of the lower score.  Not every shot was great but good enough that they helped.  I even shot par on a Par 5 after taking a drop.  On that hole I would usually lay-up to @ 100 yards and often miss the green altogether with my 3rd shot (or worse chunk my approach and put it in the waste area).  Yesterday I went for it from @ 200 yards out with wind in my face and landed in the waste area short of the green.  My drop left @ 40 yards in and I stuck it to 3 feet for my par putt.  If I had laid up I would have avoided the penalty stroke but likely would not have been on the green in regulation and may still have been working for par.  By going for it I gave myself a chance at birdie and still saved par. I do not plan on being crazy aggressive but I think I tend to be too conservative at times so I will "go for it" a little more often going forward.
    • Day 14 (15 May 24) - Worked with the SW in the backyard, short pitches from 10yds up to 30yds.   Focused on ball placement in stance - ball back, ball forward, ball center.  Afterwards moved to inside the shop to work on putting pace on the rug - putting one way gives about an 8' putt, going the other a 6' before bumping onto the adjacent rug.  Focused there on the line - picking a target point about 18"-24" out and making sure the ball rolls through that point.
