This gets me excited a bit. I love my Titleist 915 Hybrid. I consider it the best hybrid on the market.

On a side note. Isn't this a tad off from Titleist release pattern. Their hybrids are on the odd years with the woods and drivers. Yet they introduce one on an even year? Oh well. I guess I can accept this happening once in a blue moon.

From the looks of the club the overall shape looks nearly identical to the 915 hybrids. Their "Active Recoil" channel looks to be cut deeper in the 816 than it was in the 915. Probably to add more ball speed on low hits. Which is good for a hybrid. You are more likely to catch these slightly thin.

Not sure if that is tungsten weighting or not, but the two wing shaped dull gray looking weights on the back remind me of the Ping i20 driver in a way. If they are weighting I presume it's there to add stability to the club by moving the weight to the edges. It also looks like they took the changeable weight and made it thinner, but wider. Probably to also help improve stability.

Overall the club looks very similar to the 915, but with some slight tweaks.

H1 - High launching hybrid

H2 - Compact Hybrid for more control and piercing ball flight

H1 comes in 19 thru 27 degree lofts, with 2 degrees intervals

H2 comes in 19 thru 25 degree lofts, with 2 degree intervals.

I am kinda upset they don't have a 17 degree hybrid. I really that loft for a hybrid, especially off the tee.

Agree on the grey crown. I'd like to give them a try though. Love my older 910's, but my hybrid miss tends to be a little toey, so any weighting/technology that helps that would be welcome... ....or i guess I could just stop hitting them out on the toe!

Is there something meaningful behind Titleist switching the numbering from 900 series to an 800 series for these hybrids?

Titleist rep said they are synching up their hybrids with their iron releases.  He said they consider hybrids an extension of irons and believe people should be fit for hybrids when they are being fit for irons.  The 816H1 is closer to the 915 but has a different weight and now includes the SureFit hosel.  The H2 is a smaller head and will spin less.

That makes sense. At least it's a better excuse than Taylormade's release pattern, oh wait they don't have a pattern :)

This is exciting. I love my new (purchased last April) Titleist driver and have been considering getting matching fairway woods and/or hybrids -- probably the latter sooner, since I'd also be getting a 4H (I currently use a SGI 4I). But I am surprised by the timing of the release of these too.

This actually is good for someone like me who is strongly considering buying the AP1's and wants to include a hybrid in the purchase.

With sexy hybrids like these, I'll be distracted from the AP1s when I'm poking around your bag. These are all kinds of gorgeous.

I think that's why they did it, with lofts getting more jacked, 3 irons are almost non-existent and 4 irons are next to go so it makes sense to time the release of their hybrids with their irons.  I also like that the hybrids are given their own series that stand alone from the woods and irons.

I've always liked how Titleist does business, they just seem to do what makes sense and rather than ridiculous marketing hype they let their products performance speak for itself.

The downside is that they don't make their product lines easily understandable to the average consumer, largely because they have to have everything be provided by a fitter / retailer. But when I'm at Golfsmith hitting clubs, I always forget which model is which. "Gah, is the D2 or D3 driver the one for the worse golfer?" "Is the .d the pro or the regular model?". This is all small potatoes, but it is a bit hard to follow, and I probably know more about equipment than the average golfer.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
