Yesterday, I read Pope's transcript despite my policy of not reading anything more than two pages long.   I must say it is one of the most well written document that I have read in a long time.   If you haven't, I suggest you read it.

2nd paragraph - a gentle reminder to congress what their job should be.

"Each son or daughter of a given country has a mission, a personal and social responsibility. Your own responsibility as members of Congress is to enable this country, by your legislative activity, to grow as a nation. You are the face of its people, their representatives. You are called to defend and preserve the dignity of your fellow citizens in the tireless and demanding pursuit of the common good, for this is the chief aim of all politics. A political society endures when it seeks, as a vocation, to satisfy common needs by stimulating the growth of all its members, especially those in situations of greater vulnerability or risk. Legislative activity is always based on care for the people. To this you have been invited, called and convened by those who elected you."

I'm not sure why, but every time I see the Pope with his mitre on, I think of this Family Guy skit. I can see Francis saying this.

I remember a comedian (Steven Wright?) saying that "the pope is one hat choice away from being the grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan...." lol

What's the point of having any leader :)  His acceptance of alternate lifestyles means that you should not hate that person for the acts they do. He is very much in the mold of what Jesus did in terms of forgiveness, acceptance and not judging people. Jesus has denounced many sins and has told people what they should do and how to act. Yet when he meets a person who has done contrary to what he has said he has been accepting of them as a person because they are human and not a perfect person. Yet not judging that person does not mean the Pope condones their actions in terms of Catholic teachings. That is a big misunderstanding. When he goes and says, ""If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?" This means that if a gay person wants to become Catholic then he has to do so with regards to catholic teaching meaning not perform the acts of a gay lifestyle that are in contradiction to church teaching. That doesn't mean they have to marry a woman. It probably means they have to abstain from sex. Just like straight people outside of marriage should abstain from sex.  In no way is the Pope saying that a gay lifestyle is not sinning. He's saying that if you are a Catholic, do not judge, do not hate the person. Be accepting of the person as a human being.  You can be accepting and love a person for who they are but not condone their lifestyle.  His opinions on marriage though has always been towards what the Catholic Church has always believed that it should be preserved as between a man and a woman.  Really the only big thing he's said that doesn't go well with the US Conservative Catholics is on Refugees, Immigration, and Climate Change.  It doesn't discredit her position. The Pope always been against gay marriage. He has stated that the opinion on Civil Unions could be different. Which is an interesting distinction he makes. In the USA the government still defines it as a marriage.  Now the different discussion is on if her doing her job violates her beliefs. I say it doesn't. She is not acting as member of the church. She is acting as a public employee. She is not a priest. As such signing those marriage licenses is not signing them as a representative of the church, but a representative of the government.  Also, as a government employee she needs to follow the first amendment herself. Meaning she can not bring Catholic Law into the Government workplace.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

This Pope is doing more for the Catholic religion and uniting people than all the Popes going back to [ but not including ] Pope John the 23rd. If he is able to keep this up he may go down a the greatest Pope.

What are the chances? First thing I see on a golf site is someone talking religion. The pope is just a man, like all the others, but with better PR. Pedophile priests led by a socialist who protects the capitalism which made the Vatican filthy rich. Now, go play golf and quit praying to the sky for a decent putting stroke. Craig

Welcome to the forum @Wilie Kata

It is unusual for new members to post in these threads. These tend to get rather testy. I recommend checking out the rest of the site.

JPII was instrumental in taking down the Soviet Union. Francis is off to a terrific start, but he's got a ways to go, legacy-wise.

IMO, he is already creating a great legacy of what future papacy should be like.

Despite this talk of him being a "cool" pope, it might be important to mention that he's still The Pope. He still has anti-gay, anti-abortion, and anti-women, and anti-contraceptive views. Not to mention his meeting with Kim Davis today.

Well, the Pope is closely connected to God if he met with Davis today. :-$

The meeting was last week.

Wish he hadn't done that ... lost confidence in the God Guy now. One can disapprove of gay marriage and still do their elected job. She has gotten more than her deserved 15 minutes ... her and Ahmed, the clockmaker... another overblown...

Of course.

More details coming on this... but apparently the meeting was arranged by the Papal Nuncio, who is a cultural conservative. Who knows what the Pope was told even though he is fairly conservative in his private and public beliefs -- he does not judge but he does not agree with gay marriage. And then they talk about conscientious objectors -- well, she can object by voicing her protest but still execute her job.

You don't take a public job in which you generally agree as a public servant to obey the law and treat all people equally, and then decide to treat some less equally than others.

Well, they might have done it previous to the 70's, and then less so later, but no longer -- too much media.
