Shot an 87 yesterday on a par-73.  4 doubles and a triple.  Other than those holes, I played ok.  My course management needs a lot of work.  I'm just not thinking my way around the golf course right now, and my misses (constantly short-siding myself, fairway bunkers, etc.) are turning par/bogey holes into double/triple holes.  For instance, hitting driver on a 325 yard hole and driving it into a grove of trees next to the green instead of just playing something to 250 in the middle of the fairway.  Took me three shots to chip my way out of the trees and on to the green.  Turned a good birdie opportunity into a 6.

I played a new course today with 3 friends. One the guys and I had to make a bet, our usual bet of a lunch, but we weren't sure how to even it out since he never plays golf. He said he never keeps score when he plays and normally "doubles par", so I figured he'd probably be a little better than that and assumed he'd hit 125-130. We agreed I'd spot him 30 strokes. Well, he started off playing really well. Certainly giving up strokes with the putter and around the green but he was hitting it off the tee pretty well, especially for someone who never plays. I started well with 3 bogeys in a row, and then the wheels fell off. I was double or triple the rest of the way and was really frustrated. After the front 9 he had a 62 and I had a 53. Pretty much felt like I wasn't going to be able to make up the strokes. The back 9 was a different story. He still played well, even getting a legitimate chance at eagle and settling for a birdie (he drove the 260 yard par 4, creek in front of the green). He fell apart half way through the back 9, hitting a 10 on a par 3. The same par 3 I birdied, actually. After 18, he had a 126 and I finished with a 95. I won by a stroke. :-)

44 (+10), started off real good, 2 over through 5, then went 8 over in the final 3 holes. It was just wierd. The triple was my own fault, i hit an iron into the trees on a short par 4, tried to punch out, ended up in a fairway bunker, chunked it short, and then it went down hill. The last hole was strange. Topped my drive, should have just layed up with an iron, i pull out a 3 wood, hit it into a hazard. then i hit my next shot 30 degrees right, it was wierd, not a shank just a very open club face. Then it went down hill from there.. But i drove the ball great, my iron play was so so, my chipping was pretty good. I just fell apart..

74 in a best-ball two-some.  Pretty good for a two-some comprised of a 14 capper and a 30 capper!

Bottom line: had fun!

82.  First round of the year.  I hit the ball well, and putted okay...but my chipping was horrendous.  I didn't leave myself very many make-able 1-putts.  At the very least, it felt good to knock the rust off.

I just shot the best 88 ever. Crisp irons, solid driving, and good short game and putting. The problem? I had enough bad breaks to last 3 rounds or more. 436 yd par 4, I crushed a drive down the left side and it took a big hop left into some deep kikuyu on a mound, and I could barely move the ball with an all out 9 iron...took me 3 to get it out. On a 225 yd par 3 I hit a beautiful 3 iron that landed just in front (I thought it was perfect) and proceeded to roll all the way off the back into the base of another kikuyu covered mound. Just those two breaks cost me an extra 5 strokes, and there were probably another 4 or 5 that I left on the course.

It was just one of those wierd days of bad bounces, wind gusts, and barely missing turning into bad situations. Don't really care though, cause I was striking it well. Oh well..

Shot a 37 (par 35) on the back nine last night in the rain: 1 double, 1 single, and 1 birdie.  Irons and putting were both very good.

Same old. Nice drive off fairway goes a tad left and lands up against a tree. Lost shot. Then hit tree with recovery.

Excellent 4 iron into  a green bounces  into bunker where the sand is like concrete. lost shots.

inexplicable lost ball in long grass. you get the picture.

End up with 95 instead of 91. 11 pars and bogies with 7 doubles and triples.

Positives are just 30 putts and some nice iron play.

Handicap stays at 20.

But there's an 85 just around the corner.

One of my golfing buds joined Bella Collina and invited me out to play 18 of the 27 holes.  First time I played the course - tons of elevation changes as the layout is spread over multiple canyons.  We played the tournament tee's which may have been a smither too short... The par 3's were all shorties... But most of the other holes were either up hill (Par 5's were up mountains) or down hill with severely sloped fairways.  I've been hitting that RBZ 3W pretty damn well... It came in handy today!

Five birdies -- nice! And you drove the green on the first with a 3W? Respect.

I shot 77 today with 2 (yes, two) GIRs. I guess the one good thing about completely losing your swing is that your short game gets a serious workout. 25 putts.

Hahaha no - I didn't drive the first hole with a 3W.  The first tee shot on the Royal Lytham 9 is OB right - and hazard/desert brush on the left.  A straight tee shot is required, and it is severely downhill.  Hit a great 3W ~ 260 and had a little SW into the green.  Hit it ~ 6ft and made the putt.

I was hitting the ball well... Just a few lost shots... Particularly on #14 it was about 285yds with my GPS.... Hit a driver OB right (slight block).  Almost went back to the bag to grab a 3W... Decided against it, stuck with the Driver and hit it Pin High right edge, laying 3.  Then proceeded to hit a easy chip 25ft past the hole as I was trying to make it - and hit it thin, and then missed the comeback putt.  Double on the card - eewwwww.  Really would like to have that hole back!

Right now I feel like I have broken through a pretty big barrier (breaking 80 consistently) - and now just need to take it another step of knowing I am capable of shooting par (or lower).

I see why you think I drove the green on #1... That is a user error - I made birdie.  But had one putt. I'll fix that. :P

I tried to comment on this last night but I must have forgot to hit send, here goes again ... Bella Colina is right down the street from my office.  My wife has an ex co-worker who's a member out there and I had a chance to go out there (only once so far) with him.  They are very kid friendly and we brought our (almost) 3 year olds with us (my avatar is from that day) and had a blast.

We "played" the Carnoustie nine.  I found the "perched" greens really tough - especially as a first timer - and it was fun teeing off with a hybrid on a 600 yard par 5 to keep from running through the fairway.

I see that you used driver on the last hole.  For future reference and as a testament to the elevation changes, my friend tried a little trick;  After we both hit good tee shots with 3W, he pulled out a range ball and a 7 iron and that ball ended up in almost the exact same spot as his actual tee shot.  It was very 18th at Kapalua-esque.

I wanna get out there and actually play 18 (without the kids) but just haven't had a chance.

Bella Collina is a really nice club.  I'm considering joining too - but the biggest hangup I have is that it is a solid 30 to 35 minute drive from door to door from my place in Newport.  Most of it driving down the 405/5 - so it wouldn't be that bad as I could cruise.  But the ~ 60 mile round trip commute could add up.  Also, the range was a little goofy - but outside of that - they have a very solid practice area which I would use.  I also liked the fact that they have 27 holes, so you could mix and match what you play to rid the monotony of playing the same 18 hole club day after day.

Interesting point about 18 (9th on Carnoustie).  I hit a bad tee shot on 18... Blocked it out to the right and it held up in the rough just right of the cart path (bad luck - because I really thought with that severe of slope - it would roll down off that embankment).  Ended up having a terrible lie where my feet were well below the ball.  Still working on my Driver with the swing changes I've made.

Just curious - after your 7i rolled out - what kind of yardage did you have in on your approach?  Like 170 to 150??  Were you able to see the green due to the large dogleg left?  That would be my only concern - is not being able to see the green due to the trees blocking your approach shot.

Overall, had a great time playing Bella - and hope to get out there more often with my buddy.

    • I am wondering if this is worth asking ShotScope (the company) about.  I have been thinking of my short game a bit and looked at my statistics.  Compared to a 10 handicap (I am a 10.9 as I type this), past ten rounds, I am losing 0.06 in short game.   That's close enough that I want to look at myself now compared to a 5 here.  Losing 0.55, that tracks, and now I want to see where. From the rough, I'm gaining 0.03.  Cool.  From the fairway, I'm losing 0.13 ; some practice and being more certain of my quarter and half swing distances will shore that up I think.   Bunker, -0.45;  I could have guessed that.    I have one greenside bunker shot per round average (if I'm reading this correctly) in the last ten rounds and it appears it wasn't a particularly good shot (when I won my flight of my club championship a few years ago, 54 holes stroke play, I hit into zero bunkers the entire tournament;  that's my favorite kind of bunker play).  That's cool, and I love the drill from LSW about long bunker shots.  And I do try to prioritize not hitting into bunkers, and when I'm in one, my goal is get out to where I can two putt or, failing that, to where a decent putter (which I strive to be soon) can two putt.  Getting up and down is a bonus, and I haven't holed out from a bunker in over 15 years.    And then we have distance, where every short game range outside of 10 yards, I'm losing to the 5 handicap, and not gaining all that much inside 10 yards.   10-20 yards is the most concerning, at -0.30.  My quarter 58-degree is 20 yards, so these are more touch shots, something I don't really practice (I have a few estimates for what eighth shots do, which I don't have a better term for other than "using this wedge, imagine it's a long putt motion.") I wish I had a grid:  for each distance gradient, for each short-game lie type, how's my SG?  Are my losses primarily a bunch of bad bunker shots with some decent-to-good not-bunker shots or do I have some distance from the fairway/rough where I have plenty of room for improvement?   This isn't quite the joke about Game Golf telling me to improve at 25-50 yard shots from the other to gain 0.2 strokes per round, but something in between is what I'd like to know.
    • Day 15, April 23.  I have spent over an hour hitting balls today in my practice area;  primarily 6-iron, the usual drill.  I have noticed that when I take a backswing and check the mirror, I've stopped well short of parallel, but when I record it, I'm getting to parallel.  Maybe something quantum is going on?
    • The last episode with distance wedges reminded me I really need to dial in mine.   I was looking at my strokes gained: approach data, which in ShotScope is 50-225+ yards.  Compared to a 10 handicap (I'm a 10.9 as I type this), last ten rounds, my only area in strokes gained: approach where I'm not gaining over a 10 handicap is 50-100, and I'm considerably worse from 50-75 than 75-100  (-0.37 v -0.14).  Compare the same range to a 5 handicap, and I have two ranges from outside of 100 where I'm at -0.04 and -0.01 (which does NOT bother me;  I'm sure I'll be fine in those before I start really getting to the point of challenging the 5 baseline), and also the 50-100 are the only ones where I'm losing more than 0.04 to a 5 handicap.  The thing is, I think I'd have known something was up even without the data, but I'm glad for the data.  I'm pretty sure that what I think of as a half swing with my PW is about 50 yards, and the same swing with my 9-iron is about 65.  I could probably do 75 or so, same swing, 8-iron.  My gap wedge is 85-90 yards on a "full swing" (I don't take a full swing with 9 on down, I flight, something I think I got from Erik years ago) and I think a similar swing with the 54 goes 75.   I also think my worst full swing clubs are the wedges.  Maybe my next Skillest lesson, I should add a video of me hitting a full swing gap wedge (in addition to normal lesson recordings) and ask about it.  Back to the topic.  The episode discussed some practice-at-home for those shots, and I should go back and listen (and then get what I need for that).  I've been thinking of revamping my home practice area, maybe getting some sort of launch monitor for home (although that may necessitate moving the practice setup to the garage, which maybe I should do, and then I could hit driver and fairway woods too).  Maybe I'd be getting that to practice my partial wedges;  I wonder how many people buy launch monitors for that purpose.
    • I don't dislike them, but I don't play in them enough to have a real feel for them. I really don't like the SWAT format.  The D player is almost never going to have the low gross on a hole, almost certainly not the unique low score.  A net version of SWAT is something I could handle I think.  A similar format that I came to really enjoy is a 1-2-3 tournament, which my club used to do once or twice a year at some city courses (might still do, I have been inactive in the club and am just getting back in now).  Each foursome is a team.  On hole 1, the best (net) score from the group counts for the "team" score.  On hole two, the two best count.  On hole three, the three best.  Then on hole four, we're back to the best one, and we repeat that pattern for all 18.   My first time playing in such an event, the tournament director and a few others were realizing they hadn't decided what the tiebreaker would be, as two teams had come in at 121.  While they were debating it, my team finished our round and posted a 120, which included my first ever sub-80 round.    Everyone gets a chance to feel like they're involved, although it probably isn't for the "few times a year" players that a scramble can get involved.   Some of my favorite not-involving-me stories from these events were the plus handicap players being the ones out for a hole -- if the #18 handicap hole number is a multiple of three, the rest of the team might have to carry the plus handicap.
    • Some notes on what worked for my driver…. 1. Firmer grip pressure 2. Fling club back feeling like it’s left arm only. Right arm is along for the ride. *Kind of my go to for everything right now. It keeps the hands in, and allows me to feel like I can put the brakes on the backswing and swing the arms down. Also feels easier to get the right arm up off the chest.  3. Fricken rip it. If I do that, and I don’t lower the club with my body, I am stripping it. Biggest misses are maybe a slight pull or maybe a straight draw if I toe it.
