Today I got fitted for some Ping G equipment.Β

I went through their nFlight system, which is pretty good. It just uses either GC2 or Trackman with their own proprietary GUI.Β

I went with the Ping G Driver, 10.5 degrees, Tour 80 X Stiff, 45 inches. It was either the Ping G or the LS Tec. They were really really similar. Honestly there is hardly much difference between the two. I think the LS is slightly less draw biased. Besides that they produce very similar numbers.Β

The real gem of the G line is the fairway woods. This club just looks terrific, feels great and just launches the ball with ease off the ground. This might be the best 3-wood I have seen and hit in a long time.Β

I got fit for the Ping G 14.5 degree 3-wood in the Tour 80 Stiff shaft, 43 inches.Β

I also tried out the crossover. I have mixed feelings on this one. First it's a best of a club. If you think hybrids launch too high, this club is for you. It's easy to hit. Launches absolute bullets. The other issues is, the offset is noticeable. It's a really ugly club. I like my hybrid a lot. Not enough going for it for me to add it to the bag.Β

The fitting took about 1.5 hours. The place I went to is nice because it has a hitting bay and then you walk to the other room and you can hit shots down range. He mixes in GC2 and actual ball flight (limited distance balls on the range part).Β

My clubs will be ordered on Monday and probably come in the following week. No buying clubs off the shelf for me ;)Β

Here is an image from the PDF they sent me of the drivers. The shaft was actually the Tour 80 model not the 65.Β

It looks like you hit the middle LST way farther, why did you choose the G? Β Did it feel like the one that went way right had something to do with the club? Β Or maybe I don't understand the chart. Β Are the bottom 2 rows the same club?

Dang, you've got some nice distance.

It's called not labelling things :pΒ

Bottom is the LST set at the lowest loft setting.
Middle is the LST at it's normal 10.5 degree
Top is the G at it's 10.5 degree

It just felt more stable to me. Ping says you can see upwards of 400 rpm of spin reduction. That is robot testing. Mine was 200, but I was hitting up more with the LS-Tec versus the G. I could see a few more degrees launch and a tad less lower spin as well. For me they are basically identical club. I just feel like I can control the G more than the LS-Tec. You are talking on the best three shots 300 carry versus 305 carry?Β

Hitting up more on the G could easily get me that extra 5 yards. Hitting less up on the LS-Tec could cost me those 5 yards. You are talking 1.6% difference in yardage. That is within the margin of error.Β

Took a couple of G irons and fairway woods to the range today.Β  Hitting range balls at 50 degrees is like hitting rocks.Β  Still, iron shots went high and deadly straight.Β  Fairway woods didn't go as high as I'd like, but I have a pretty slow swing speed so it's understandable.

So far, so good.Β  Can't wait to go to a warmer climate so I can practice and play with the new G-Series clubs!

The ultimate "old man" setup:

Ping G30 driver
Ping G Fairway woods - 5 and 7 woods
Callaway X-Hot #5 hybrid; Old school secret weapon
Ping G #6-9 irons; W and U wedges

Odyssey Versa Putter

I fooled around with the G irons at golfsmith today and was really coveting them. Β They actually appear much more compact than the G30s despite being at least as large. Β Still I'm not pulling the trigger as I just regripped my 8 year old R7s and am hitting them just fine. Β It's getting harder to resist all these cool new clubs.

Played two rounds with the G driver, fairway and 4 Crossover. The driver is good, I don't see much of a difference in performance betweenΒ the G and G30. The G has a more pear-shaped look and sounds better. The G30 is louder and the G hasΒ more of a "ting-ier" hit.

With the G30 I had a 10.5Β° that I adjusted to 9.5Β°. With the G I went with a 9Β° for a couple reasons. When I was at PING in September they recommended I try a 9Β° to pick up a little ball speed and with the even lower CG the G will launch it a little higher than the G30. I noticed the ball flight was a little flatter but still very much in the high launch/low spin category. The rounds I played were in strong winds and I was really happy with how little the wind effected my drives.

The G fairway is a real winner for me. I've been looking for the right fairway the past couple years, switching between the G30 and various Callaway woods.Β The G is a solid improvement from the G30, super easy to hit, launches high but doesn't spin too much.

The Crossover is an awesome club. Like advertised it's a hybrid of a hybridΒ ;-)Β Looks like an iron but performs similarly to a standard hybrid. I was even able to "knock down" a few shots where I was directly in the wind.Β I went with the 4 which is 21Β°, which I hit about 210. MyΒ longest iron isΒ my i 4-iron which isΒ 23Β° and I hit that 190-195. I was able to order mine in a red color code so I assume you can also customize what loft you want. I might possibly bend the 4 to 20Β°, especially if I go with the G irons.Β My one complaint with the Crossover isΒ that it doesn't come with a headcover.

I found the G30 to be a very forward ball flight. I was hitting a 10.5 degreeΒ at 12-15 degrees of launch and low 2000's spin rate. Just the combination of the Snell ball, the Tour 80 gram shaft and the G driver head was good right off the bat.Β

Interesting point on lower loft giving more ball speed. Which makes sense, you are lowering the spin loft which increases the smash factor. Not sure by how much. If you still produce above 13 degrees launch angle and sub 2300 rpm spin then it's probably more beneficial than seeing 15 degree launch with plus 2500 rpm spin rates.Β

The same here. I bought my 910 fd because I wanted something off the tee. When I started moving to the back tees I found I wanted to use it more often on par 5's. It just isn't a good club off the ground.Β

The Ping G fairway wood just looks that good sitting down by the ball. It just feels like you could hit a ball out of a divot mark with that club. I think all 3-woods should sit flush like. No problem getting the ball into the air from off a cheap driving range mat ;) It's rare I find a fairway wood that just looks that good and can get the ball off the ground that good.Β

My only complaint with the hybrid is the offset and it's black. I think it looks more like an iron so it should be more in the chrome to gray finish. The thing is a beast. I was hitting the 3-crossover as long as my 2-hybrid.Β :bugout:

This is where it gets tricky for me. I love my Titleist 915 hybrid. It is tough to find a good hybrid. If I was going to get a crossover it would be more of a 4/5 iron replacement versus the hybrid. I am not sure that suits my game or not. Β

If I had to choose it would be the 5-crossover which would be in the 230 range. That would bridge the gap a bit more between the 5 iron and hybrid (15 yards each). Which would be a good fit for me.Β

Can I get Ping to make me one with about half the offsetΒ

I'm looking forward to using my new weaponryΒ :-D

I hit the G & the M1Β this past Saturday on a sim at a local country club. Β The club pro let my buddy and I hit the 10.5 and 9 of the G. First of all I love the way it looked. Β I feel like I could swing it blindfolded an hit a decent shot. Β It felt a little heavier than my i25Β overall weight but that could just be how the weight is distributed in each club.Β  I didn't see an significantΒ difference in the numbers between the i25 and G.Β  The G seem to be more forgiving left and right but that could have be the way I hit each shot. Β I probably hit 20-30 balls with it and I wouldΒ definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a new driver. Β Ill probably wait until their next model comes before I change sinceΒ Im still very happy with my i25.Β

@saevel25Β and @mvmacΒ did either of you hit the G Stretch fairway wood? Β If you did, what were your thoughts? Β

launches slightly lower with slight less spin. Sits just as nice behind the ball as the G. Just a tad wider from toe to heel.Β

I went with the normalΒ G because I wanted something more versatile. I just feel it being slightly more compact I can be more confident off the fairway.Β

I didn't get numbers on it, I'm guessing 1.5-2 degrees lower launch with a few hundred rpm less spin just from the eye test.Β

I tried the SF Tec 3w and 4 crossoverΒ today. Β I preferred the standard 3w (tried it last week)Β to the SF Tec but even so I was able to hit some nice (for me) shots with it, both off the tee and the ground. Β I'm getting a fitting done next week for a ping 3w as I think it could be going in my bag this year. Β

Couldn't get anything out of the crossover - I've tried the 4 stiff and regular shaft and it just doesn't feel great when I hit it, Β Spoke to the guy in the pro-shop and he said I was the first person who had tried it and didn't like it so it must be something I am doing wrong!

Cool! I have a fitting on Wednesday, my first one. I'm looking at getting the driver and 3 wood. I'm also trying the Gmax and G irons. I've read that the Gmax are more geared towards high handicappers, but I'll wait until I've had a hit. I'm excited!

Looks like they copied the Callaway headcovers. I wasn't a fan of those either. I think they look nice but the extended sock to protect the shaft should never be cut out of the picture.
