Jones, Nelson, & Woods: Early Retirements?

If Tiger is correct, and his days of playing competiive golf are indeed over, then he joins the ranks of. Bobby Jones, and Lord Byron Nelson. Jones retired at the age of 28. right after completing the REAL Grand Slam. He then put his wife and children first, followed by his profession of practicing law. Nelson retired at the age of 34 after competing the AMAZING year of 1945 (18 wins, including 11 in a row!). Tiger is in VERY. good company!!

Where exactly are you drawing parallels here? Jones retired at 28, Nelson at 34, Tiger may or may not retire at 40-41. What's the common theme here? They're all males? They're all golfers who have won? They all retired at some point in their careers (well except Woods, who may or may not retire imminently)?

Could I make the exact same post and substitute two random, retired golfers for Jones and Nelson? Say Arnold Palmer and Willie Anderson?

I'm just not sure I get your point, but seeing as you have started the thread, maybe you can elaborate?

It certainly isn't that like both Jones and Nelson, Woods, if he were to do so, would be stepping out at the pinnacle of his career.....

 I would say he's had as substantially longer career than Nelson or Jones.

If Woods actually does retire, even semi retires, now is the time to do it. With all the youngsters who are now playing excellent golf, Woods would be leaving the game in good hands.

I am contrasting the3 I named with the following:  Julius Boros, Sam Snead, Fred Couples, Colin Montgomerie, etc.  Some golfers stay relatively injury-free and play into their 60's or 70's.  Others are done before they get to 50.  With the exception of Monty, the golfers I just listed have won Majors.  What is my point:  some golfers choose to retire early and some are forced to.   If Tiger does have to quit, then it is because he is forced.  It is not a voluntary act.  We can argue as to whether he swung too hard in his youth, and is now paying the price.  Regardless, he MAY have to retire even though he does not want to.

Yes and no.  If we use winning Majors as the goal, Tiger has not won one since the 2008 US Open.  He has always made it clear that one of his main goals was to win Majors.  In 2008, he was crippled when he won the US Open.  Since then, he has not won even one.  He was 33 when he stopped winning Majors. He was not retired yet, but he was nowhere near the golfer he was in his prime.  Looking back, he might admit that he should have retired then.  I know he has a lot of competive desire and worked hard to come back, but desire cannot overcome physical problems.

Here is the quote in USA Today by Steve DiMeglio on December 29, 2015:

Tiger:  "IF I'm able to prepare and do the things I need to do to WIN a tournament, I will Play.  If I can't prepare, I won't play."  So he admits that it is unknown if he will be able to play.  It is out of his control, and up to the amount of pain he has and what the doctors recommend.  The desire is there, but the physical ability to perform may or may not be there.  We will all know in the next few months.

Nor would retiring at 40, after 14 majors (plus three U.S. Ams), and 79 PGA Tour events, plus tens of other wins worldwide, be particularly "early."

Yup, they are exactly the same - except for all of the differences.

And, BTW, Nelson did not retire after '45.  He won 6 times in 1946.

I know Lord Byron played in 1946. I did NOT write that he retired IMMEDIATELY after winning 18 times with 11 in a row. I simply wrote that he retired AFTER he accomplished what NO ONE has ever matched and NO ONE ever will!

Seriously that is s violation of logic. Nelson did retire one year after 1945. By your reasoning, Jack retired in 1963. Tiger will be glad to hear that. With 14 Majors, he will move from 3rd place to SECOND, behind Hagen's 15 (I refer you to my "Happy Birthday, Haig" thread!)

Hagen won 11 majors, not 15.
