April 2025 - Pinehurst, playing Mid Pines and Southern Pines + 3 other courses. Probably Talamore, Mid-South, and one other.

July 2025 - Bandon Dunes, just me and my dad.

That's a great spring/summer of trips!

I'll be in Pinehurst in March, playing Pinehurst No. 2, No. 10, Tobacco Road, and The Cradle.

I just returned from my yearly Thanksgiving visit ti Pinehurst, 14 rounds in 16 days.  I guess golf won't aggravate my back issues.  A nice surprise, some friends invited us to go to Nova Scotia with them next August, 5 rounds, including two at Cabot (Cliffs and Links).  Walking has suffered with the back injury, I have 8 months to get back enough stamina to walk those courses.  I know I can get a buggy with a doctors not, but I'd really prefer to be on foot.

Heading to Orlando Florida in February (Presidents Day week).  10 Rounds while I'm there. Playing all of the Disney courses with my Dad and then all my buddies come in and we play Thursday to Sunday.

Magnolia, Lake Buena Vista & The Palms

Crooked Cat and Panther Lakes

Evermore -Grand Cypress & Links - Grand Cypress will be a new addition to our rotation.  Haven't played that yet.

With the cold weather here in the mid-Atlantic, February won't get here soon enough.

I've played the Grand Cypress links course several times, I always enjoyed that and had played Grand Cypress, back when there were three nines.  Interested how this new course is, that opened last year.

I enjoyed TPC Sawgrass, played that a few years back.

Playing a tournament out in Vegas the first weekend in May. I've been playing this tournament since 2009.

Our tournament is hosted at Bear's Best.
I'll probably grab an additional practice round somewhere else in the Vegas area. Not sure where. Any suggestions?

So far around Vegas the ones I can remember I've played are:

  1. Bear's Best ... obviously
  2. Prim Valley Resorts ... 20 years ago it was awesome, then it was bought and sold like 4 times.
  3. Angel Park. ... Great deals. Not a bad course, 36 holes plus a 13 hole lighted executive par-3 course. It has a solid practice area. It gets a lot of play.
  4. Wolf Creek ... I freaking love Wolf Creek, but it's 80 miles North, so a bit of a drive. ... Also, you can only hit irons on the driving range, which is interesting.
  5. All three Paiute Golf Courses  ... I really enjoy Paiute as well. The Wolf course is my favorite, but you can't go wrong with any of them.
  6. Bad Lands (Been closed down for a while now) ... Not my favorite, but gone now anyway.
  7. Vegas National ... Surprisingly reasonable in terms of price. Also surprisingly forgettable.
  8. Cascata ... I enjoyed it. But man, it's spendy. (A foursome can cost you $2500 all in.) They do give each group a forecaddie, so there's that.

Anyone have a suggestion as to where to play in and around Vegas. Let me know. My group is always looking for new places to play a practice round.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

I have nothing to add but "get out of town and you'll find better options." I'm in Vegas frequently and have mostly given up on finding quality affordable golf. I will check GolfNow and sometimes find deals that are attractive. So now I mostly just practice when I'm there, and I think Angel Park is one of the better options in the area for range and short game work. I do want to bring the wife out to the executive course one of these days.

I've blogged about my wanderings since 2003. I love roaming throughout the USA looking for remote public golf courses to play.

Play it at after nightfall, under the lights. It's kind of a different experience and I found it a lot of fun.

The executive course (as you probably know) gets a ton of play and its open really late (They have totally after dark leagues and stuff). That doesn't give the ground crew guys a lot of time to work on it. So, it's rarely in great shape. But still its a fun experience to play under the lights.

Next weekend myself and two pals are hopping on the plane to Queenstown with the following itinerary:

Fri: Jack's Point

Sat AM: Arrowtown

Sat PM: Roxburgh

Sun: Wanaka

Other than the front nine at Wanaka, all will be new to me. Very excited to see them all and fingers crossed for good weather. A great selection of courses in the area - Millbrook, Hills, Queenstown, Alexandra and Cromwell will have to wait until next time!

Someone might point me in the direction of the best place to post/view photos as I haven't yet encountered a dedicated forum for that (no doubt user error!).

Its going to be a busy few months for me.  In just a couple of weeks I'll be joining the SandTrap group near Pittsburgh for 2 rounds.  Then in August we'll be in Nova Scotia for a week, including both Cabot courses.  And now we've added another little holiday.  Following my niece's wedding west of Detroit, my wife and I will go up to Forest Dunes for 3 rounds.  I picked that spot because I'm intrigued by The Loop, a Doak design that is played in different directions on alternating days.  One day is the Red, playing counter-clockwise, the next days is the black, going clockwise.  And there's the original course, a Weiskopf design.  All told, 10 new courses to add to my list!

See you Saturday at Reserve Run.

I have to confess, even thought it's a long way out. I'm pretty excited about next year end of April. The tournament I play every year for the better part of 2 decades is moving to Paiute Golf Club in Las Vegas. We'll get to use The Wolf and Sun Mountain courses for our tournament and get to do the Horserace on The Snow Mountain Course. I'm already looking forward to it.

Sounds like a strong itinerary. Have you played most of the Scottish ones before? Are you an eighteen a day guy or how is it spaced out?

Have not played any of the Scotland courses, in 2023, did 10 courses in 12 days Turnberry, Troon, Prestwick, Carnoustie, Old Course, New Course, Muirfield, North Berwick, Kingsbarns and Dumbarnie.

typically 18 is enough, we do play 36 in Florida but it is usually a scramble or something where you don’t have to grind a lot.

Royal Dornoch

I'm sure I mentioned it before, Royal Dornoch is my favorite golf course, of all I've played.  It's been said the toughest shot in golf is the second shot on the par-3 second hole there.

    • Day 430 - 2025-12-04 Slow motion backswings (with chippy shots) with AlmostGolf balls.
    • Day 24 (4 Dec 25) - Spent about an hour working with the new 55° wedge in the backyard.  Kept all shots to under 20yds.  Big focus - not decelerating thru downswing and keeping speed up with abbreviated backswing.  Nothing like hitting a low flighted chip with plenty of check spin and then purpose to float a pitch of similar distance.
    • Day 114 12-4 Put some work in on backswing, moving the hips correctly, then feeling over to lead side. Didn't hit any balls was just focused on keeping flowy and moving better. I'll probably do another session tonight and add in some foam balls.
    • Didn't say anything about your understanding in my post.  Well, if you are not insisting on alignment with logic of the WHS, then no.  Try me/us. What do you want from us then?? You are not making sense. You come here and post in an open forum, question a system that is constructed with logic, without using any of your own and then give us a small window of your personal experience to support your narrative which at first sight does not makes sense.  I mean, if you are a point of swearing then I would suggest you cut your losses and humor a more gullible audience elsewhere. Good heavens.
    • I have access to far more data (including surveys and polls) than you do with your anecdotes. I mean this as plainly and literally as possible: you’ve demonstrated that you do not. They would, one way or the other.
