In my short time learning to play golf I have managed to putt quite well, my driving is reasonable and getting better, I can now play decent shots from the fairway and rough, and from time to time my approach shots are quite good. So why the hell is it that all four of these factors NEVER happen on the same day ?

Cause if they did you would be on the PGA circuit, not writing posts in the Sand Trap  HA HA HA

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

It's why it's called golf. Any person who can get their golf game to hit on all cylinders, all the time,  would make the best players in the world look like newbies. What was the saying from some of the pros that if they could hit 6-8 great shots in a round they would win the tournament?

If the pros can't do it all the time, we mere mortals can only hope and pray that our bad shots are not that bad. That we have a decent recovery game.

Golf is tough to play, and that is what makes it appealing to us.

Actually they do, but only about as often as Halley's Comet is visible in the sky.  It really does happen, as I can testify to.  Although I've never had a course handicap lower than 10, I've shot quite a few rounds in the 74-76 range.  To do that I had to have everything clicking - good off the tee with even the worst ones still playable; approach shots that even when they missed the green left good chips or fringe putts; short game getting me up and down on nearly all missed greens; never more than 2 putts on any hole.

At the times when I felt like I was playing well but still shot low to mid 80's, it was because at least one of those factors was not working, sometimes two of them failed, and that was enough to make more bogies, or a couple of double bogies.  Precision has never been a strong point of my game, so my misses in every facet of the game had to be minimal for me to shoot my lowest scores, and that usually only happened 2 or 3 times a season.

There are too many things in golf that can go wrong.  To have everything go right, everything has to align.   I don't know about others but my odd of everything aligning is once every 20 to 30 rounds.   I am due for one now :-).  I hope you get yours soon .

I've had a few rounds where all aspects of the game seemed to work pretty well, most of the time.  But even on the days when I've shot my personal best scores, there have still been a few shots that I definitely could have done better.  Golf is never perfect.  Golf is really all about making the best possible result from "less than perfect."

Golf is not about putting together the perfect game but rather about trying to reduce the number of bone-head shots you make in a round

This is a truism in golf:  No matter how good you are or how well you play, it seems like you can always point to more than just a single stroke left out on the course.  I shot my personal best 73 while carrying a 16 handicap during a tournament where one of my fellow competitors was my marker, so I didn't realize just where I was until we finished.  I knew that I'd played well, but I couldn't believe that I'd done that well because I could still sit there in the clubhouse and visualize at least three strokes left out there that I should not have lost.

Golf is goofy that way! :~(

I feel your pain...I have never had a round that it all came together, but i have played a few holes that made me feel like I was on the right track until I go to the next tee box, hit a really good drive down to the 150 yd marker then be lying 3, 25 yards off the green...but, I keep plugging at it, getting a little better the more I play.  I enjoy the game and take it serious, but not so serious that I let a bad round or a bad shot ruin my day...nothing that a stop at my favorite local coffee shop won't fix...Hot Mocha is a cure-all

When you're bitten by the golf bug it infects you with this intense motivation to improve and set unrealistic expectations for yourself.  I watch a lot of golf and what I've learned is that the best of the best golf has to offer still hit balls in the water, still hit drives into the woods or OB, flub chip shots and miss 4 foot putts.  I imagine that these guys after shooting a 72 come off the course with the same complaints we do about how much lower they could have scored if....

The difference I see in the pro's to most of the people I play golf with is that a pro hits a ball in the woods and his next shot is a 200 yard shot down the middle of the fairway or on the green.  The next shot after a flubbed chip or bunker shot is almost and sometimes is holed out.  If they miss a putt, they usually leave it close enough that they don't miss the next.

It's nearly impossible for a pro to hit 59 near perfect shots during a single round.  So when it comes to us mid - high handicappers we have to be a bit more realistic about our expectations.

heck id be happy if 2 things would come together in a round ,  most days seems like i only do one well . and then there's days where i cant do anything  well ... come to think of it not sure why i like this game, much less am addicted to it....must be a glutton for punishment

Good thoughts by some smart people.

Golf is hard, because on every hole you need big swings and little short twitch muscles.

You have to use an arc like motion to make the ball go straight.

Even with everything in our games coming together for one round, we could still score crappy. I think the first answer sums it up pretty well "Golf is hard".

As to your specific issues, high handicap golfers have not yet developed their swings yet. Once you have a reasonable facsimile of a swing, you will find things a little less haphazard.

Give it time and they might all happen together. Twice in the last 2 years I had it happen for me. Once in about every 100'ish rounds.

Yep, scored 23 points on my front today, and 14 on the back. The thing is that I new it was going to happen, but I couldn't do anything about it
