Woke up Saturday with a sore right shoulder. Thought maybe I had strained something since I was lifting some heavy boxes the day before. Sunday I couldn't raise my arm more than shoulder high.

Told my wife about it. She had me do some arm movements while holding her palm on my shoulder. Her first words were "well you are done golfing for a while".  Apparently the muscles and ligaments that hold the shoulder joint together are not doing it. Plus there is some popping going on. Maybe a damaged rotator cuff too. I will know more Wednesday when the doc does the x-ray/mri thing.

Funny thing is that as long as I keep my arm below my shoulder, everything feels fine. Sleeping is a bitch, since I like to sleep on my right side.

I have no idea what I did to damage the joint. It just showed up. Got some good meds, while hoping I just need to give it it some rest. " Don't count on just rest fixing it" is all I can get out of my better half.

ICE, lot's of ice. Use crushed ice in a large Ziploc bag. They make great ice packs, conforms to contour of the shoulder. (also, place a towel between the skin and the pack will help prevent frost bite)

I overdid pruning trees with manual shears, and digging around to prep a seed bed for grass.

Had sharp elbow pain when playing about 10 days ago; just finished a steroid pack + Aleve + ice. Should be ready for full swing in another 10 days.

Your wife is just rubbing it in :-). Based on what youve described and considering your apparent age(retired?) a tear is possible but something like tendonitis is much more likely. It also doesn't take much swelling in the shoulder for limited range of motion as there isn't much space in the joint. Lets hope for the best!

By all means get it checked out by a doctor but it sounds like you over did it the day before lifting boxes.  Hopefully no tear and you will be back on the course soon.

It would be worth it to see a doctor and if it more than tendonitis.  If it is, get some PT and exercises to strengthen the core muscles.  I have a couple of partial tears and PT has worked great for me.  It has caused me to shorten my backswing, but I am able to play without pain.

After some testing that took longer than a round of golf, they found three muscles/tendons strained, and a 4th with a very slight tear. These are the 4 muscles/tendons that make up my right rotator cuff. No sergury required for those problems......just some rest, and a little rehab.

However they did find some small bone chips in the socet they want to remove. That will take place next Tuesday. The chips are from normal wear and tear over the years they said.

Long story short I am not going to be playing any golf for 4-6 weeks. I suppose I can use the rest. ...lol

To use our local expression, Hang with em.

I do think I'd go insane in 4-6 weeks. I don't even go that long during winter.

A 4-6 week layoff is nothing. It will go by fast. It hasn't been too long ago I was real close to being fitted for a casket. I didn't golf for 2+ years. Besides it' getting into our hottest 6 weeks of the year out here. A little "brew and cool" time is not a bad thing.

I can relate. I won't but I can.  The shoulder is where about ninety million muscles meet for coffee and to exchange information.  When you gradually stop moving as much; moving a lot can suddenly be a problem.  Have I mentioned Amway products?  Just kidding...unless you have something seriously wrong; the solution is to very gradually attempt to extend your range of motion.  I bet there is something that is really hard to do.  That will most likely be the result of something else.  Track it down to whatever it is.  Yoga-type ----works for that.
