I can kinda see that...But hipsters are more annoying than anything else. Harmless. But Bryson just comes off as a douche nozzle. There's something smarmy about him. Like he really thinks he's better than everyone else.

It's possible to think you're better than everyone else and at the same time still be harmless, yeah? ;)

Mostly, though,it basically sounds like we agree on him - we're not big fans. :)

They should have titled that, "Here's a shit-eating grin even the Dalai Lama would punch."

I don't know when that issue came out but for 2017, he's got 4 missed cuts out of 7 events.  I don't qualify that as a "rising star."

Yeah... he's not in my "top-100 favorite golfers named 'Bryson.'"

Seems to have brought one length irons to the fore though and from what the commentators tell, his golf technique is all science based but sounds like he likes to be "different", or hipster as I've read further up the thread?

I'm sure your guy Tigs had plenty of smug looks on magazine covers. But he had much more reason to be smug. Gernally I prefer a less cocky demeanor even if you deserve to strut a bit.

Bryson did seem to be unwise playing the putter before it was approved, but perhaps that was a media savvy move by his team / club sponsor to generate extra free publicity?

He made the club himself. It was a homemade club. It's cited in a few places, like http://www.pgatour.com/news/2016/12/07/bryson-dechambeau-new-putting-technique.html .

Golf is just as much art as proper mechanics.  I can see this kid winning now and then, and he may be in the hunt quite a bit, but in the end, you've got to be creative to be one of the best.

Yeah, the shirtless cover (Men's Health?) wasn't a great choice, but eh. Tigs doesn't have that "hey look at how awesome I am!!!" face that Bryson is sporting.

I gotta say that I can't comprehend how he is going to control distance on his irons with all the same shaft lengths.  Just seems like the club head speed with the scoring clubs will always be the same.  I don't necessarily see the advantage of a side saddle putter.  I think he is looking to be a ground breaking golfer in club development, but it ain't gonna happen.  For me the putting stroke is the easiest of all the strokes in golf, yet its pure simplicity makes it the most frustrating.

A side-saddle hardware variant shows up most years at the St. Louis Golf Expo. The 2017 expo happens this weekend, and I'll see if I can some shots of the clubsmith and his putters.

The head is rotated to an unusual angle on the gooseneck shaft, and the putter set-up gets excellent pendulum action.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Side saddle, one length irons, not what I would say is a rising star, more to looking for focus on himself, thousand of players use conventional clubs and stroke methods and are way in front of him,he didn't finish 36 holes last week on a sponsors invite, tend agree with Grayson Murry you get no more invites for the season if you withdraw, he would missed another cut.

For the number of golfers participating in a tournament and media's need to generate content, it's sure hard to find information about players.  (I guess they're too busy watching social media to repost pictures of Paulina Gretzky.)  In any event, There should be some allowance for withdrawing due to legitimate injury/illness.  The Hat reportedly had some kind of hand injury, though I couldn't find anything that described its severity.  I assume that because a fellow golfer made a crack about it that it wasn't that serious.  The problem there, of course, is that only the player really knows if the injury/illness is affecting their game.

He's got a 8:35 tee time for the Honda Classic so we'll see what happens.

I think he has status on the PGA Tour. Why did he need a sponsor's invitation?

You correct not much reported on his injury/illness, and when fellow golfer made the crack about withdrawing might just been right not a serious problem, but as you say we see what expires at the Honda this week. My thoughts still go he was not going to make the cut so he sort cut himself.

Maybe they did a reshuffle and he was "out"? He missed 3 straight cuts before LA.

Well, he finished.

+3 in his first round.  Lot of people still have to finish but he's T128 as I type this.

    • Day 14, April 22.  This morning, before going to work, I took the time to hit two dozen balls (indoors, off the mat, into the net), all with a 6-iron.  As before, this was focused on the pelvis separation and the length of the backswing -- yesterday's video view was encouraging that I'm making progress.
    • Hey folks, Here's be a better video that outlines some of my challenges.  Any suggestiosn welcome.
    • I enjoyed the distance wedges episode. It's something that I've not really taken the time to figure out for sure, but I went to a local trackman place over the winter and tested my four wedges (PW, AW, 54, 58) and got four yardages with each one. I am using Dan Grieve's method - you have a 1, 2, 3, and "full". The number references the number of clubhead widths between your heels.  I never really got to grips with the clock method - I'd find my 9:00 one day would go 40 yards and the next day 60 yards purely based on how fast I happened to swing it, but I couldn't turn that off and I was basically at sea with the speed method (Wesley Bryan does this - he takes almost a full swing for a 15 yard chip). The Grieve method I set my stance width and that really limits how much my swing moves back and forth and the speed seems to be naturally more consistent.  Anyway, I wound up with four yardages for each club - PW 48, 80, 112, 127; AW 41, 73, 101, 112; 54 36, 57, 91, 98; 58 28, 47, 81, 86 So, in order, I have 28, 36, 41, 47, 48, 57, 73, 80, 81, 86, 91, 98, 101, 112, 112, 127 which gives me a pretty good set of numbers. I do have a big gap from 57 to 73, but I can do a 2.5 58, which is giving me about 64. Then as they noted you can give it a bit more, or grip down on a club too to adjust a little bit. It's really useful and very freeing to just know what to do. When you have a 54 yard pitch, rather than pulling my 58 and thinking how hard is 54, I can just take my 54, do a "2" swing and just grip down a little and I'm in decent shape.  Incidentally, Erik talked a bit about watching Scheffler picking off his yardages to within a yard. I've watched DJ do that too with his wedges. Scottie does it trying to hit it all the way up to like 200 exactly with a 6-iron and he's hitting it 200.5, 199.7, etc. Absolutely mind blowing how good his distance control is. Insane.
