Which will be a better performance, Jordan Spieth's 2015 season or Justin Thomas' 2017 season?

Am I the only one who would pay good money to see Spieth and Thomas go head to head for a major this year?

Spieth. Thomas has won two events in Malaysia and two in Hawaii. Until he breaks through against a top-flight field, I'm not going to predict that he'll win two majors and finish T4 and 2nd in the other two.

I honestly think they'll be going head to head a lot this year. I know his experiences doesn't compare with Spieth's, but he's hot right now. Hopefully he can keep that going into Augusta.

I agree. Didn't Spieth finish in the top 5 in ever major that season, winning two of them that year?

There are a lot of golfers who get on a fast start, but then fade away. Patrick Reed and Jimmy Walker come to mind who have had fast starts to the season, but then dropped away.

Spieth won the Master & US Open, finished T4 1 shot out of the playoff in The "British" Open Championship and 2nd in the PGA 3 shots back.
And Spieth has a active streak in the Masters of 2, 1, 2.

I expect big things from JT, but he needs to break through in a major to start his rise to the next level.

I think Thomas will tail off relatively quickly.

I'll check into this thread after the first major completes.  Until then, nothing to talk about.

I didn't even take notice of Spieth, really, until after the first major so I'm definitely not going all in for JT at this point.  I'm still not certain Spieth will really ever come back from last years Masters.  Don't get me wrong .. I know he'll be around and win plenty and grab another major or 2 . .but I'm not sure he'll have another run like he did in 2015.  I hope so because that was fun to watch.

Since the end of the Tiger Era, I don't go into a year expecting any multiple major winner.

I think Thomas wins one major and two more tournaments this year... I think it was hard for him to watch Speith excel so fast and get left behind... He wants all those same accolades and attention Speith received... He looked happy in his interview after his 59... Finally (me time)...

Speith is a great guy and will always wish him well, as did Thomas, but being the second guy is tough... If Thomas has a gigantic Season it will lift Speith and make him hungry again.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
