I hope that this is just a minor set back, but this seems to happen way too often. At this point, I'll be pleasantly surprised if he plays again.

Even the cause of cramps is under review now. It was always thought to be dehydration, but now some may be caused by nerve overstimulation. Back spasms have always been a mystery.

Well, unless it truly is 100% back spasm, I can't see TW coming back to anything near resembling his old self.

I think his career is over.  I've said it before, athletes don't know when they are done.

Uhm, no. I'm not a doctor (though I do have a degree in medicinal chemistry), but… no, that's not what generally causes spasms. Nerve issues are nerve issues, and present as such. They don't often present as spasms.

I get spasms now and then...a result of not so great posture, which has stretched out my rhomboid muscle (under the shoulder blades).  I will get a spasm if I am not properly warmed up before some sort of exercise, like a push up.  No nerve damage involved.  Usually takes about three days to clear up.  Best course of action is to ice it as soon as I feel it...that limits the damage, and I can get rid of it faster.  After that, massage and heat are how I treat it.  Can't play good golf when one comes on though.

Hmmmm, that's a new one on me! I was taught that muscles respond, or contract, due to stimuli from nerves.

Dehydration is another question, but does anyone seriously believe that Tiger is out there dehydrated?

And, BTW, is there anything you DON'T do?

Thank God I have only had them one time in my life, and it was at a fairly young age. To this day I have no clue what brought them on, and my life was pure misery for two days. I couldn't stand, sit, or lie down! Then they went away and never returned.

The point is that it's not the same thing as the nerve issue he had before. People without nerve damage can have back spasms. Muscles normally contract due to stimuli from nerves, but a spasm is not a "normal" contraction of a muscle.

And I didn't say he was dehydrated. I just quoted Google.

It probably wasn't a pinched nerve due to a bulging disc. :-)

      I'm not doing this for the hundred and twentieth time. Sorry in advance, but you get the massively abridged version. Those guys also benefited from the weaker/shallower fields. Also, Watson's career doesn't overlap with Jack's like many think it did. Tom is nearly a decade younger. Jack won only like four majors only after Tom won his first. And Tom won more British Opens than he did all three of the other majors combined, as it was his specialty (not Jack's). Arnie's career similarly doesn't overlap Jack's as much as many think.   Jack would also tell you Tiger was the better golfer.

      Weaker depth of fields for sure. Some of the top level guys with Jack were pretty awesome. Tom Watson had the lead on the 72nd hole of the 2009 British Open, an event where Tiger missed the cut. Old Tom was almost 60 years old. Jack himself at age 58 finished Top 10 at The 1998 Masters and scored better than Tiger, who won The Masters by 12 shots just a year before that.   The success of both Tom & Jack in older age gives some hope that maybe Tiger can find the magic again at some point. He’s still trying to figure out how to build the stamina for 72 holes after the leg injury. I would love to see him jump on the leaderboard in the coming years. I know a lot of people have given up on him at this point, but that was also true from 2014 to 2017 with the back injuries. He had a hell of a resurgence in 2018 & 2019. Would be fun to see it again.

      I ran across an interesting new clip, Johnson Wagner went into that spot with the Referee who allowed the relief.  Apparently there was a perfectly reasonable shot to be made, as Johnson clearly demonstrated, so relief from the TIO was perfectly appropriate.
