Ball marking video - Why is this OK? I don't think it is.

Please explain to me whether you think this is OK. As far as I can see, it is exactly what Lexi did. And it's even worse from the player's perspective.

If we were playing together and I did this, would you think I'd made an honest mistake or something else?

@Shorty, what's the point of this thread? Only one guy that I've seen has said that what she did was okay. This feels like piling on in a pointless way.

I think that it makes sense to see it from a player's perspective. I also think that it is a good illustration to encourage people to think about what they really think and why they think it. There is a lot of outrage and confusion over something which to many (most?) of us seems to be pretty plain. :-)

Again, though, I don't think anyone (except that one guy) thinks she didn't deserve the initial penalty.

Oh well -  maybe it'll serve as a reminder that marking a ball should not be done casually. BTW congratulations on your Golf Digest accolade. :-)

Not okay, and it's pretty obvious.

However, now that I look at this I just realized I took the quarter my partner gave me, for the round to mark instead of a tee, home with me. :-P

She turned the ball and replaced it. Likely a brain fart. We all have them. But it's off center. And not 3/4".

If we were playing, with my aging eyesight I probably wouldn't notice. I probably wouldn't notice I moved my own ball.

Not OK of course,

But why do it? because the ball was lying in a small indent, and she wanted a cleaner lie.

Pointless as it seems, it's the only good explanation, I don't buy the brain fart theory.

Damn, I wished I was playing my round with you yesterday. . .I could have just bumped my ball out of the tree root with my foot and various other awkwardly bad positions that cost me strokes. :-D

I wouldn't have said anything anyway. I have bad shoulders so have a set of additional "rules" I use around rocks and tree roots - I consider them GUR. It isn't worth shoulder surgery. I'm paying to play, not being paid to play and don't keep a handicap. We'd just have fun and probably have a few Mike's Hard Lemonades playing a game that resembles golf.

It's at least 0.7". No less.

FWIW, when a ball comes to rest on a green, it is always going to be in a slight indentation due to the weight of the ball. That is why putters have loft. Moving it will just create another indentation. Of course the depth of the indentation depends on how soft the green is and how long the grass is.

Play it as it lies, mark behind the ball on the line of put, replace ball in same (or as close to same as is possible) location. No give and take beyond REASONABLE error (likely less than 1/4 inch).

Otherwise, you are cheating to achieve an imperceptible advantage... hardly worthwhile, yet still a violation of the spirit, and most likely, rules of the game
