New Irons

Hi,

This week I got fitted for golf clubs for the first time in about 20 years. My fitting is almost the same as back in the late 1990's.

What I'd like to know, is if I should switch from steel irons to graphite irons. (Ping Isik's to Ping g's).

Your "fitting" should have included that evaluation, right? Am I missing something?

As Hardspoon said: You say you've been fitted. Shafts are probably the most important part of that fitting. Did you not think to ask the fitter who has seen you hit balls? Not that you should have asked - he should have started that conversation. What do you think people who've never seen you hit a ball would know that a fitter who has worked with you doesn't?

That is odd. The first thing they asked when I got fitted was what my current shaft and flex was. He then looked at all the number after trying different shafts and said I should keep using stuff. DX-300 or DX -200

If the fitter did not give you an idea of what shaft you need, you did not get full service.

Are you asking because the fitter said you could go with either option and you're just trying to get more information?

I think a qualified fitter should be able to provide that info! Of course, I have to allow for the fact that, like a medical diagnosis, @Spring1 is simply looking for a second opinion, albeit from complete and total strangers who have never seen him swing a club.

Look, @Spring1, I'm not trying to be rude here, nor is anyone else. It's just that your question confuses us a bit. And don't let this "grilling" scare you away. We're honestly curious and would like to help.

FWIW, graphite shafts are lighter than steel. So, if you stick the same length graphite into a formerly steel shafted iron, it's going to monkey with the swingweight. It will make it lighter! To compensate, most manufacturers will make the graphite shafted clubs slightly longer to get the swingweight back up.

The question is whether or not you can hit those longer irons as accurately as the originals. You should be allowed to hit both models and make a decision from that. And, I notice that you're a 39, and you mentioned the Ping brand in particular. So, I'm guessing this was a "golf store" fitting, and not a "custom clubmaker" fitting.

Then another possibility presents itself. Maybe @Spring1 is wondering whether the store "fitter" is trying to upsell him into something more expensive, or something they need to move! All that matters is performance. Do the clubs work for you?

And, of course, I could be entirely wrong about everything I've typed above and made a complete fool of myself! But then, I (and we) could use a bit more info.

YES! When you get older you want more flex ability from your club shafts to make up for slower club speed. They are lighter as well making your bag a little lighter. You will be glad you did.

You dont know how old the OP is or what his swing speed is. If he was 20 years old when he got fit in the late 1990s, he would be in his 40's now, still could easily have a driver swing speed over 100mph. 

Giving blind advice like this is not beneficial to the OP, and choosing a shaft because it makes your golf bag lighter is definitely not the best route to take IMO.

Good advice that I didn't take. Being over 60, I was looking to lighten by bag, and liked the way my swing felt with a lighter club. The launch monitor showed the steel shafts to be about 5 yards longer and a bit more accurate, but I bought the graphite shafts anyway. Live and learn.
