My 35-75 yards chip shots are rolling off the green, almost always...

it will land toward the center or before center and will roll the other half of the green and stop outside the green

am I not compressing enough? I take a divot but it never seems to stop. It will look good then roll forever.

Using Nike mojos and top flight d2

putting also seems to be rolling too much. I am always rolling past the cup. About 2 to 4 yards past no matter how light or short the stroke is.

Always adding 2 more stoke to my score. If I can just get the ball to sit and/or lag properly to to hole. I'll be able to break 100 consistently

Even your putts go 6-12  feet too far....

Feel type shots, including longer putts can be difficult to judge, primarily because they're often not practiced.  I'm not trying to be glib, but if you're landing your 50 yard pitches on the middle of the green and finding that they run through the green, learn to land them at the front, or even short as necessary.

It's also worth noting that distant balls like those you're playing tend to produce less spin, meaning that you need to accept that and simply play for more roll than you'd get from a higher spin ball.  And no, I wouldn't necessarily recommend a higher spin tour type ball for a high handicap beginner.

According to equipment reviews, the Mojo is a distance ball with fairly good stopping power. For the D2 family, the newer D2+ Feel is supposed to deliver distance and greenside control.

Being that you have a beginner's HDCP, I would suggest you get a short-game lesson. I get a short-game checkover every few years, and I always learn something new.

A skilled instructor can take you further toward short-game control in an hour than you can take yourself with a whole season of hit and miss. Also, good contact on partial wedges and chip-and-run can build a foundation for a solid full swing.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Could be the greens you play.  There is one course I play ocassionally that has greens that are not too fast but are hard.  It's hard to make a ball mark, it's hard to stop the ball.  You have to try to adjust to the roll.

The last paragraph here is very important. While a soft cover, high spin ball might help you on approach shots, it may likely kill you on longer shots with less lofted clubs. Because less lofted clubs produce more sidespin than backspin, and will probably put you in the weeds or woods! You need to look for a happy medium, and maybe play for the roll.

It won't always work. But, nothing in golf ever does!

Good points and I prefer to keep the same balls. Higher spin will cause my slice to go over two fairways lol. Right now I have a controlled fade that I can predict.

what club are you using for the 35-75 yard shots? A wedge with a higher loft such as a 58 or 60 degree lob wedge would help get the ball higher in the air and stop quicker once it lands. Also, how old are the wedges you are using? Are the grooves crisp and sharp? That will affect the amount of spin you are able to generate on the ball.

Mizuno 56 degree MP - RAW Black Ox, I think they're pretty old. Grooves are still in good shape.

After the above posters, I started paying attention to my pitch/chip shots and I always aim for the middle. I think I need to aim closer to the front and allow for the roll. Seems no matter how hard i try, i'll get the middle though.

Not on hard greens, you don't.

Not really. The difference between premium golf balls and cheap golf balls with regards to driver spin is under 1000 rpm. The difference in wedge spin could be upwards of 3000 rpm.

What technique are you using? If you are chipping then you will obviously see more roll then if you were pitching the ball.

Have you tried choking up on the club?

Technique for chipping? This is the one I learned from the local pro.

address the ball, open face slightly, aim left slightly, weight over the left side (with head over/past the left foot). Stroke it with shoulders only no wrist or hand movements. 3 inches back, 3 inches forward. Use speed for distance not stroke length. If you need to go over a bunker, open a bit more and hinge, 3 inches back, hold hinge 3 inches forward.

I tried choking up but then i feel very cramped like a ball very low to the ground. Not very comfortable for me. I have a very upright posture.

My best guess is that you use to much forward shaft lean and hit to down on the ball. You are taking to much loft off the club and are hitting shots to low.

I would check out this thread,

I pitch pretty much nearly all my short game shots around the green. Chipping only comes into play when I don't need the height and the ball is close enough that I don't need the extra speed from adding wrist the amount of wrist hinge used in a pitch.

@saevel25, thanks for the link.

I'll try this tomorrow and see what kind of results i get. Reading the other comments and watching the video, I might actually be hitting too hard and shaft too far forward (I'm picturing my stance now and i think my hands are past my left hip, but i don't remember being taught with so much shaft lean. Wonder how that snuck in naturally). My ball tends to pull left and low when i lose my tempo. And speeds off the green.

I can see your head being forward of the ball for a low flying chip, but NOT ahead of your left foot! That sounds like an extreme exaggeration. Maybe pull your head back so it's just in front of the ball and see how that works.

I've started doing the same thing - I'm much more consistent.  Even a very short shot with a pitching motion is better (for me) than trying to chip the ball.

@hack2scratch, one thing you'll notice is that the best way to control roll-out is (often) with trajectory, rather than spin.  If you can hit your shot higher, it won't roll out as much, and this is something you can do more consistently than trying to "spin it back".  The pitching video referenced above should help you get more trajectory compared with a chip shot.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
