At least I found it interesting.  I was looking at my scoring on the GHIN site and found an unusual split in used vs. not used scores.  The 10 used in the calculation right now are all in the 80's, yet every score not being used is in the 90's, most in the 90-93 range (except for one aberration, a 101 from a tournament last year when I tried to play with a bad case of gout in my right foot - at least a half dozen costly shots were the result of trying to play through the pain).  I can't remember the last time I didn't have at least a single score either in the high 70's, or more recently in the low 90's, among the 10 used for handicap.  It's been 3 years since I didn't have a single 90's score on the used list.

I thought that the handicaps used are the average of the lowest 10 of most recent 20. I may not understand , but it appears that using only the scores in the 80's is cherry picking.  Am I missing something?

The 10 scores in the 80s are probably the 10 lowest differentials of the last 20.   I don't think Rick is neglecting to post his higher scores.

Fun stat:  the 10 highest differentials of the 20 most recent are sometimes called an anti-handicap.

Oh, I never thought that he was, only that from the description whoever calculated the GHIN scores did something different. I did not know about the anti-handicap, thanks. I really don't understand what benefit that has though (owing to my own ignorance I guess).

Anti-handicap is just a measure of variance.  It's generally higher than your real handicap (unless you posted 20 identical differentials).

It just happens that on this revision, my 10 lowest scores are all 80's, and only those 10 are below 90.  If I had an 11th score in the 80's, or only 9 in the 80's with one in the 70's or 90's, it wouldn't have been as statistically odd.  I've been carrying an official handicap since 1989, and I've never seen this split before.

ah, okay...I do not have an official GHIN, but do run a spreadsheet according to their calculations. I only keep the last twenty, and the older scores drop off as replaced by the new one. Sounds like you are pretty consistent as of late.

I belong to a men's group that uses Scorekeeper software for our group. It's a USGA-compliant calculation. But in reviewing my printout for a June tournament, I felt sure the calculation (a 26.1 HI, the one I used when I registered on TST) was wrong. There were some old scores in the very high 80's and low to mid-90's that I posted before my long-time layoff due to my back problems and return to golf.

Anyway, I registered with the Texas Golf Ass'n, posted my last 20 scores on GHIN, and voila! Now my GHIN is 27.6 (EEK!) But it's only because I could post ALL scores, not just those when I golfed with my men's group.  So now I have to post my high handicap here on TST, but I have a lot of work cut out for me to reduce the HI substantially this year. -Marv

This is where I first read about Anti-Handicap.  Handicap guru Dean Knuth suggests that it might be a factor to consider in picking a partner tor a better-ball competition.  Take the difference between handicap and anti-handicap.  A good pairing would be a player with a low difference (i.e. a very consistent player) with a player with a high difference (more erratic).

But you're not posting rounds when you play solo are you?  (You have to have somebody with you--anybody--to post a score for handicap.)

I must have missed this rule.  Why?

It doesn't have to be someone I know, does it?  Just someone that was there, like if I sign up as a single and get paired with one or more people.

I think I read that site many years ago -- it seems familiar.  Thank you for the link, I'll give it some more reading soon.

This rule was changed for the 2016 season.  My best guess, this change was a first step towards unifying handicap systems worldwide, and took the USGA system a little closer to the system used in Europe and elsewhere.  It can be anyone you play with, or even someone who just walks along with you.  You can read a whole lot of discussions of the changes here:

I have read about anti-handicap before but never paid much attention to it. I guess I'm quite consistent because my anti-handicap is less than 5 strokes different.

I do shoot around my average alot so it makes sense.

Speaking of this, I just calculated mine last week for the first time in awhile and I've become quite consistent.  It's certainly not all good, because part of what's brought my variance down is that my handicap has gone up, but there have been no wildly awful scores in there for awhile now.  My cap is 5.5 and my anti-cap is 8.5.

Heck, even if you just take the difference between my lowest and highest SINGLE differential right now, it's only 6.5.

My current handicap goal is to have my 20 most recent differentials below 20... 20 below 20

I had 8 in a row until this morning, I shot to a 20.3 differential. Starting over, again.

My anti-handicap is 5 strokes higher than my handicap.  My lowest vs. highest differential difference is 13.2.

    • Nah, man. People have been testing clubs like this for decades at this point. Even 35 years. @M2R, are you AskGolfNut? If you're not, you seem to have fully bought into the cult or something. So many links to so many videos… Here's an issue, too: - A drop of 0.06 is a drop with a 90 MPH 7I having a ball speed of 117 and dropping it to 111.6, which is going to be nearly 15 yards, which is far more than what a "3% distance loss" indicates (and is even more than a 4.6% distance loss). - You're okay using a percentage with small numbers and saying "they're close" and "1.3 to 1.24 is only 4.6%," but then you excuse the massive 53% difference that going from 3% to 4.6% represents. That's a hell of an error! - That guy in the Elite video is swinging his 7I at 70 MPH. C'mon. My 5' tall daughter swings hers faster than that.
    • Yea but that is sort of my quandary, I sometimes see posts where people causally say this club is more forgiving, a little more forgiving, less forgiving, ad nauseum. But what the heck are they really quantifying? The proclamation of something as fact is not authoritative, even less so as I don't know what the basis for that statement is. For my entire golfing experience, I thought of forgiveness as how much distance front to back is lost hitting the face in non-optimal locations. Anything right or left is on me and delivery issues. But I also have to clarify that my experience is only with irons, I never got to the point of having any confidence or consistency with anything longer. I feel that is rather the point, as much as possible, to quantify the losses by trying to eliminate all the variables except the one you want to investigate. Or, I feel like we agree. Compared to the variables introduced by a golfer's delivery and the variables introduced by lie conditions, the losses from missing the optimal strike location might be so small as to almost be noise over a larger area than a pea.  In which case it seems that your objection is that the 0-3% area is being depicted as too large. Which I will address below. For statements that is absurd and true 100% sweet spot is tiny for all clubs. You will need to provide some objective data to back that up and also define what true 100% sweet spot is. If you mean the area where there are 0 losses, then yes. While true, I do not feel like a not practical or useful definition for what I would like to know. For strikes on irons away from the optimal location "in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?"   In my opinion it ok to be dubious but I feel like we need people attempting this sort of data driven investigation. Even if they are wrong in some things at least they are moving the discussion forward. And he has been changing the maps and the way data is interpreted along the way. So, he admits to some of the ideas he started with as being wrong. It is not like we all have not been in that situation 😄 And in any case to proceed forward I feel will require supporting or refuting data. To which as I stated above, I do not have any experience in drivers so I cannot comment on that. But I would like to comment on irons as far as these heat maps. In a video by Elite Performance Golf Studios - The TRUTH About Forgiveness! Game Improvement vs Blade vs Players Distance SLOW SWING SPEED! and going back to ~12:50 will show the reference data for the Pro 241. I can use that to check AskGolfNut's heat map for the Pro 241: a 16mm heel, 5mm low produced a loss of efficiency from 1.3 down to 1.24 or ~4.6%. Looking at AskGolfNut's heatmap it predicts a loss of 3%. Is that good or bad? I do not know but given the possible variations I am going to say it is ok. That location is very close to where the head map goes to 4%, these are very small numbers, and rounding could be playing some part. But for sure I am going to say it is not absurd. Looking at one data point is absurd, but I am not going to spend time on more because IME people who are interested will do their own research and those not interested cannot be persuaded by any amount of data. However, the overall conclusion that I got from that video was that between the three clubs there is a difference in distance forgiveness, but it is not very much. Without some robot testing or something similar the human element in the testing makes it difficult to say is it 1 yard, or 2, or 3?
